3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (May 23 – 26)

Heading into the long Memorial Day holiday weekend, Hulu is adding The Last Showgirl, a film that went under the radar last year and it could have disappeared entirely if not for a fantastic performance by Pamela Anderson. That's why it was an easy pick to be the first choice among the three great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend. Our other picks include one of Tom Cruise's best Mission: Impossible films, which is timely since Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is now in theaters. The final pick of the weekend is comedy/drama starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper just three years after their acclaimed performances in Silver Linings Playbook. We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Last Showgirl (2024) Some industry observers believed that Pamela Anderson was going to get an Oscar nomination for her leading role in The Last Showgirl. While that didn't ultimately come to pass, Anderson's performance was very powerful and it changed perceptions about what she can do as an actress. Anderson plays Shelly Gardner, a showgirl who has starred in a single Las Vegas revue for three decades. Shelly dedicated her life to the show, even at the expense of her only daughter, Hannah Gardner (Billie Lourd). However, Shelly is completely unprepared when she learns that the revue is closing in two weeks, and this isn't the kind of job that sends its employees into a comfortable retirement. For the first time in years, Shelly is truly terrified about her future prospects, because being a Las Vegas showgirl is all that she knows. Taking that away from Shelly might destroy her. Watch The Last Showgirl on Hulu. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is probably the fourth or fifth best Mission: Impossible movie… but it's still pretty great! Animation director Brad Bird made his live-action debut with this sequel, which puts the entire Impossible Mission Force under the gun. Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist) has framed the IMF for bombing the Kremlin, which is why Russian agents are after Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his entire field team, including Jane Carter (Paula Patton) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg). Officially, the U.S. has also disavowed and disbanded the IMF. Unofficially, Ethan still has some leeway to clear their names. Ethan gets some additional assistance from William Brandt (Jeremy Renner), a man who is hiding some secrets of his own. Brandt's fighting skills are far too advanced for someone who isn't supposed to be in the field, and his connection to Ethan is something that's haunted him. But before they can deal with that emotional baggage, they'll have to work together to save the world from Hendricks' plans to unleash a nuclear war between the United States and Russia. Watch Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol on Hulu. Joy (2015) The Silver Linings Playbook team of director David O. Russell, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper reunited in 2015 with Joy, a biopic about the creator of the Miracle Mop. Joy Mangano (Lawrence) is a put upon young woman who is not only supporting her kids, but also her mother, Terri Mangano (Virginia Madsen), her ex-husband, Rudy Mangano (De Niro), and even Joy's ex-husband, Tony Miranne (Édgar Ramírez). Joy's invention leads her to QVC executive Neil Walker (Cooper), who helps her change her life when the mops become a success. However, Joy doesn't get to have a happy ending at that point. There are members of her own family who try to steal her success out from under her, as well as some underhanded tactics from a business rival that may cost Joy everything she has. Watch Joy on Hulu.

Pamela Anderson's ‘The Last Showgirl' Arrives On Hulu This Week

Pamela Anderson in "The Last Showgirl." The Last Showgirl — an acclaimed drama starring Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis — is new on streaming on Hulu this week. Rated R, The Last Showgirl opened in theaters on Jan. 10 The official summary for The Last Showgirl reads, 'When the glittering Las Vegas revue she has headlined for decades announces it will soon close, a glamorous showgirl must reconcile with the decisions she's made and the community she has built as she plans her next act. 'The Last Showgirl, a poignant film of resilience, rhinestones and feathers, stars Pamela Anderson as Shelly, a glamorous showgirl who must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run.' The film also stars Dave Bautista as Steve, the show's producer who informs Shelly that her longtime gig is coming to an end. Curtis also stars as Shelly's close friend, Annette, while Kiernan Shipka and Brenda Song play Shelly's fellow showgirls Jodie and Mary-Ann. Billie Lourd plays the pivotal role of Shelly's estranged adult daughter Hannah. The Last Showgirl will make its streaming video on demand debut on Hulu on Friday, May 23, according to the platform. For viewers who don't subscribe to Hulu, the streamer offers an ad-based basic package with ads for $9.99 per month or an ad-free standard package for $18.99 per month. The streaming service is also a part of bundling deals with Disney+ and Max. The Last Showgirl is also currently available on digital streaming for purchase or rent. The Last Showgirl is directed by Gia Coppola from a script by Kate Gersten. In a January interview with ABC's Good Morning America in early January before the film's theatrical release, Coppola said Pamela Anderson's similarities to Shelly in The Last Showgirl made her the ideal person to star in the role. "These were both women that no matter what hurdles they faced in life, that they were always optimistic and always found joy," Coppola told GMA. "And then I saw that there [were] enough dissimilarities that the role would be intriguing for her as an actress." "She could take all of the things that she had to draw from in her life -- all of the things that I think really make her a true artist,' Coppola added. 'She's a beautiful writer, she's a lover of old, classical cinema, she's extremely well read with plays and philosophy -- so all that intelligence was some place that she could put into this character and I could collaborate with." Critics widely praised Anderson's performance in The Last Showgirl. The film earned an 83% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 226 reviews and a Critics Consensus that reads, 'A wistful showcase for Pamela Anderson in a refreshingly dramatic role, The Last Showgirl pays homage to the working class of Las Vegas with a superb collection of performances.' In addition, audiences gave The Last Showgirl a 72% 'fresh' Popcornmeter score on RT based on 500-plus verified user ratings. While Anderson fell short in her bid for a Best Actress Oscar nomination for The Last Showgirl, she earned nods in the category from the likes of the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globes (Drama). The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson, arrives on Hulu on Friday.

Carrie Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd talks 'complicated' Mother's Day as she still mourns after mom's death

For Billie Lourd, Mother's Day is a complicated holiday. The 32-year-old actress wrote about her feelings in a sweet essay on social media celebrating her own motherhood and that of her own mom, the late Carrie Fisher. Her new post comes after the Force Awakens actress revealed that she honored her mother — and the Star Wars franchise — by watching 1983's Return Of The Jedi on Star Wars Day (May the fourth) with her children. 'There is absolutely nothing in the world more magical than being a mother to my two tiny humans,' she wrote of her children Kingston, four, and Jackson, two, whom she shares with her husband Austen Rydell. 'Being their mom fills me with an indescribable joy and sense of purpose I could've never imagined even existed,' she continued 'But there would be no Mother's Day for me without my mother. She was my person (swipe for a sweet story)' she wrote of the beloved actress who died at age 60 in 2016. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Billie Lourd (@praisethelourd) She shared a childhood memory, explaining, 'When I was little she used to breathe in the scent of my head like it was oxygen and I would always wriggle away from her and laugh. 'But now I regret any wriggling I ever did because now I do the same to my kids. I wish I could wear the scent of their heads like an oxygen mask.' She added a bit of humor, advising children to 'let your moms sniff your heads today!? It may sound weird but it's not?!' 'Happy Mother's Day but as I say every year Mother's Day isn't just solely the hallmark happy so happy / griefy / complicated / numb / lonely / insert pretty much any adjective on the spectrum here. 'You are not alone. Sending my love out there to anyone who needs it today ❤️,' she concluded. The message gave comfort to many women who found themselves in a similar situation. 'Today is my first Mother's Day without my mom and oh boy did I need this sweet story from you! Happy Mother's Day,' wrote a fan. 'As a fellow Motherless Mother, happy Mother's Day ❤️ thank you for reminding people they are not a motherless daughter is hard and then when you become a motherless mother it's like your world is shaken again,' wrote another, adding,' 'Your Mama was an amazing woman woman I bet you're just as awesome ❤️.' Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher's mother, tragically died one day after her daughter on December 28, 2016 at age 84. Fisher was 60 when she dies on December 27, 2016; Pictured in Los Angeles in January 2015 One fan shared a sweet memory of her own. 'I will always keep the memory of selling her a Minnie Mouse watch for you at Disneyland. It was just the two of you, she was pushing you in the stroller. I just sold a mom a watch for her daughter, that's what that moment was. I just happened to recognize the mom.' Tragically, Fisher's mom and Lourd's grandmother, Debbie Reynolds died one day after her only daughter on December 28, 2016, at age 84. Lourd shared a photo of her grandmother standing with the Oscar winning songwriters Robert and Richard Sherman which was on display at the Magic Kingdom. 'Mother's Day Abadaba sighting @disneyland,' captioned the photo in her Instagram Stories referring to her nickname for Reynolds.
