Bright red fish caught by Mississippi angler with electric reel breaks new record
A Mississippi angler just broke a fishing record in the Magnolia State. Joseph Hoang of Biloxi, Mississippi, caught a vermilion snapper using an electric reel. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) certified the all-tackle state saltwater fish record for the month of May. The snapper weighed 6 pounds and 9.6 ounces, according to the MDMR news release. Vermilion snappers are known for their bright red color and slender body. They can grow up to 2 feet long and weigh up to 7 pounds, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The fish can be found from North Carolina down to Brazil, including in the West Indies, the Gulf of America and the Caribbean Sea. Red snapper season started in Mississippi on May 23. Anglers are allowed to harvest two red snappers per person per day with a 16-inch minimum size limit. The largemouth bass is Mississippi's state fish. It's also the most common fish to find, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP). Largemouth bass can reach weights greater than 10 to 15 pounds, sometimes stretching over 26 inches in length, according to the MDWFP.

Biloxi Memorial Day event honors the meaning behind the holiday. See photos
Veterans, service members, Gold Star families and the public gathered Monday under the hot sun and the live oak trees that line Biloxi National Cemetery for an annual ceremony honoring fallen service members for Memorial Day. 'Memorial Day is more than a holiday, it's a sacred occasion, indeed,' said Col. Billy E. Pope, Jr., Commander of the 81st Training Wing at Keesler Air Force Base. 'It's a time for people to pause amid our busy lives and to pay tribute to the men and women who made that ultimate sacrifice.' During the ceremony, a Gold Star family member, Jennifer Jones, who was honoring her brother Thomas Hilbert, who was killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007, presented a ceremonial wreath. The ceremony also displayed an honorary table for prisoners of war and those killed in action. The table, set with a white table cloth, an inverted glass, a candle and a rose, represents that those who have been lost in conflict are never forgotten. Dr. Virgil Jefferson, who was the surgical operations squadron commander for the 81st during Hurricane Katrina, attended the ceremony with his wife, Leslie. Dr. Jefferson, a trauma surgeon who says he's been in every war since the Gulf War, says people forget the reason for Memorial Day. 'People forget about it so often,' Jefferson said. 'But I don't forget it. I've been there.' Take a look at photos from the event.

Sound Off: May 18, 2025
Kudos to the City of Biloxi for re-striping Pass Road. It looks great. There are so many negative comments in Sound Off about the cities, I thought it would be refreshing to recognize the Biloxi for the good work they are doing. It's completely reckless of the Sun Herald to print the May 15th Sound Off promoting genocide. The media has lost its credibility in these matters. Genocide is wrong, regardless of who is being killed. Do better. Good on President Trump and the Republicans for seeking to put an end to birthright citizenship. President Trump once called Qatar 'funders of terrorism.' Now, he wants to accept an airplane from them. What could possibly go wrong? Can you say Trojan Horse? In words of warning to his employees, the current acting FEMA administrator said 'I will achieve the president's intent. I am as bent on achieving the president's intent as I was on making sure that I did my duty when I took my Marines to Iraq.' This makes it pretty clear that the current administration is not about serving the people of the United States. They are about serving and glorifying the wanna be dictator who sits in the White House. We are going to be in big trouble this hurricane season. So, the mayor of Newark and some congressional Democrats should be jailed for assaulting police officers, but the Jan. 6 attackers are patriotic victims? Y'all need to get your outrage together and be consistent. But at last, FOX News must tell you what to think and say first. My wife spent last week in the Ocean Springs hospital. I can only say great things about all of her caregivers. She needed lots of attention and promptly got it every time she called the nurses' desk. They were consistently polite and friendly. They were pleasant to be around. The staff made my wife's visit so much easier. Thankfully, President Trump is trying to now work a peaceful nuclear deal with Iran. Oh, that's right, we had one under President Obama that Trump immediately pulled out of showing the U.S. cannot be trusted in standing up to its international agreements. Guess now if Trump gets a deal he'll want all the credit for saving the world from nuclear war. All tattoos are not professionally done. Have you ever seen some of the tattoos on prisoners? It is very possible that MS 13 gang members do not wish to go to a public tattoo parlor to get gang tattoos and have someone in the gang do the tattoo. Ergo, you have a crude tattoo. While driving in Gulfport, I saw two major street improvements. Both were access roads near businesses. I guess I'll have to rezone my street so we can get sidewalks. First we had Sleepy Joe. Now we have Dozing Donald. If we can't have a competent, honest president, let's at least get one who can stay awake. Four different flavors of THC Seltzers are advertised in today's Sun Herald grocery section. These drinks will stone you. Teenagers are big fans. Send your Sound Offs to soundoff@

A 2-year-old vanished from a Biloxi resort's water slide. His parents are suing
While his mother's back was turned for 20 seconds, at most, a toddler disappeared at Margaritaville Resort Biloxi, her lawsuit says. The family had just started their vacation in May 2022 at the resort, a child's wonderland with an ample indoor arcade, carnival rides perched on an outdoor platform, and swimming pool with water slides and a lazy river. But the getaway ended abruptly and tragically. Kasey Thompson, 2, drowned shortly after his family from Louisiana arrived at Margaritaville. His mother Jaspanique Rogers and father Quartnall Thompson, both of Louisiana, have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in Harrison County Circuit Court against Margaritaville. They claim the resort was negligent for failing to maintain a safe pool area and prevent the drowning. They are seeking an unspecified amount in damages for the loss of his life and love, his pain and suffering, funeral expenses and loss of future earnings. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1-4 years old, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which recommends basic swimming and water safety skills for children. The lawsuit describes the minutes leading up to Kasey's death. He was playing on a waterslide near the pool. His mother turned for 15-20 seconds, the lawsuit says, to get a towel. During that time, Kasey disappeared. The pool was crowded, the lawsuit says. The water was murky. 'The pool was being guarded by teenage pool attendants who allowed him to get into the pool, where he subsequently drowned,' the lawsuit says. His parents, the lawsuit continues, 'believed that the pool was being safeguarded by trained lifeguards and pool attendants who should have (1) never allowed him into the pool and (2) should have seen the deceased toddler struggling in the pool and immediately rescued him and revived him from his drowning event safely and without harm.' The crowded pool and cloudy water slowed his family's efforts to find Kasey, the lawsuit says. The lawsuit claims Margaritaville was negligent in operating the pool, listing, among other examples: 'Overloading' the pool. Failure to adequately train staff to properly supervise the pool. Failing to notice a toddler had gotten into the pool alone. Failure to maintain clear water in the pool. In a court filing responding to the lawsuit, Margaritaville denies any wrongdoing. 'Kasey Thompson was left unattended in the swimming pool area and entered the water in close proximity to the closed water slide exit, where he subsequently drowned,' says the response filed by Margaritaville attorney William A. Whitehead Jr. of Hattiesburg. The parents, the response claims, 'failed to act with reasonable care and diligence.'
