Binghamton Move Out Project collects unwanted items for 8th year

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – As Binghamton University students prepare to leave town, many of them will be leaving behind lots of unwanted items. The Binghamton Move Out project seeks to divert waste away from landfills, while providing assistance to local organizations. Since starting with a small group of students in 2018, the initiative continues to collect unwanted items that are then donated to the community. Items include anything from clothes, microwaves, and pillows to books, nonperishable foods, and even furniture. The project works with 40 different nonprofits, including The Children's Home, Binghamton Food Rescue, The Urban League, and many more. Volunteer Coordinator Chris Harasta says they receive over 20,000 pounds of donations. 'I have kids right behind me right now dropping stuff off. They went out of their way to bring all this stuff over in the midst of this chaos. It's awesome. The support they're showing and the fact that they're going out of their way to donate is amazing,' said Harasta. Move Out volunteers sort through and clean all items so they are ready for donation.
