Service in ‘Operation Sindoor' no shield against dowry death conviction, rules Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that participation in 'Operation Sindoor' does not grant immunity from prosecution, directing a Black Cat Commando to surrender in connection with a dowry death case involving the killing of his wife over two decades ago. The commando was convicted under Section 304B of the Indian Penal Code (dowry death) and had approached the apex court seeking exemption from surrendering, citing his long service as a Black Cat Commando and his involvement in 'Operation Sindoor'. A bench comprising Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice Vinod Chandran was hearing a special leave petition (SLP) challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court's decision to uphold the conviction and sentence of 10 years' rigorous imprisonment. During the hearing, the petitioner's counsel pleaded for exemption, stating: 'I can only say one line I participated in Operation Sindoor and have served as a Black Cat Commando with the Rashtriya Rifles for the past 20 years.'

Commando Accused Of Killing Wife Says He Was In Op Sindoor. What Court Said

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today refused to provide relief to a Black Cat Commando accused of murdering his wife. When the Commando mentioned that he was part of Operation Sindoor, India's counterstrike to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack, the court replied sternly that it "does not give you immunity". The bench was hearing a Special Leave Petition in which the Commando sought exemption from surrender before the police. "I am a participant in Operation Sindoor. I am a Black Cat commando," he said. Black Cat Commando is a term popularly used to refer to members of the National Security Guard, India's elite counter-terrorism force. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan responded to the Commando's argument, "That doesn't give you immunity. How physically fit you are, you alone could have strangulated your wife." Justice Bhuyan also noted the "gruesome manner" in which the Commando allegedly choked his wife to death and said this was not a case for exemption. Justice Vinod Chandran noted that the High Court had denied relief to the Commando. The Commando is accused of killing his wife under Section 304B of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with dowry deaths. The Commando's counsel said the only allegation against him is that he demanded a motorcycle in dowry and this charge was made by two witnesses closely related to his dead wife. The counsel said these witnesses are "highly discrepant". The court, however, refused to grant relief. It issued a notice, seeking a response from the prosecution on the Special Leave Petition. "We decline the prayer for exemption from surrendering. Issue notice on the SLP returnable in six weeks." When the Commando's counsel sought time to surrender, the court granted him two weeks.

"Pakistan is now shocked...": Retired Brigadier Govind Singh Sisodia after Operation Sindoor

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], May 8 (ANI): On firing by Pakistan in the border areas and the situation after Operation Sindoor, Brigadier Govind Singh Sisodia (Retd), who commanded the Black Cat Commando operation during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, on Thursday said that India did not target civilians in any operations and this has already been the policy with Pakistan. Speaking with ANI, Brigadier Govind Singh Sisodia said, 'We always kept in mind whether it was Balakot or surgical strikes, we did not target civilians in any operation and this has already been the policy of Pakistan.' 'We believe that innocent people should never be harmed in any way. We will not do what Pakistan is doing,' he added He also said that Pakistan is now shocked and they have activated the border areas. 'Pakistan is completely guilty of their behaviour as they did not see whether it was a civil area or a military area and killed the civilians across border areas,' he added. Meanwhile, the residents in border villages in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri are returning to their homes on Thursday morning after they were forced to flee their homes in panic, seeking safety in the wake of the intense shelling by Pakistan on Wednesday. The Pakistan Army has resorted to heavy artillery firing along the Line of Control in retaliation for India's Operation Sindoor, which targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Villagers who returned today said that the shelling has caused significant damage to residential properties, with people fleeing the areas along with their whole families as well as livestock. After Operation Sindoor, the Pakistan Army continued its series of ceasefire violations by targeting civilian areas in the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. Officials said the shelling caused panic among villagers and damaged several houses. However, the Indian Army is closely monitoring the ceasefire violations by Pakistan after the Indian forces conducted the precise strikes on nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir under Operation Sindoor on Wednesday. The strikes were aimed at avenging the Pahalgam attack victims and eliminating key Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) leaders and camps involved in planning attacks on Indian soil.
