A new Soundgarden album featuring late frontman Chris Cornell could see the light of day

A new Soundgarden album featuring late frontman Chris Cornell could see the light of day. On the eighth anniversary of the Grunge legend's death (18.05.25), bassist Ben Shepherd has revealed there is an album they made with the 'Black Hole Sun' singer before his passing, which is "yet to be named", suggesting it could be released in the future. When listening back to their music, the musician feels an "overwhelming hit of awe camaraderie, power of creativity, majesty even, and love." He penned on Instagram on the anniversary: "As I wait for my son Noah to get out of school today I'm thinking about … well actually its stuck in my head and's been there since early this morning like a proud spring bird dammit. 'Its a song Chris and Matt wrote 'The Road Less Traveled' for our album that has yet to be named, just hearing Chris' voice helps, I know he did that for everyone he knew…. help them, he did for me, filled with self doubt and indebtedness and in just his tone knew what I was going through and forgave me like he always did even when he was older. It's at this point of recording all of our previous albums I'd get this overwhelming hit of awe, camaraderie, power of creativity, majesty even, and love, from the music, and my bandmates…. and I guess just pure life force. 'I can tell you, it feels good and invigorating to hear Chris singing from over that horizon and hear the mighty… mighty life, of souls sharing. To hear, as a fan… and band member, a song or two Chris brought in a few years ago turn before my very ears and finger blisters into a full blown Soundgarden tune is like feeling a glacier fall away off your chest. (sic)" Soundgarden will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November. And they have musicians in mind to perform lead vocals in Chris' place. Speaking about the honour, guitarist Kim Thayil admitted it's a "high bar, not just technically, but emotionally" when it comes to choosing someone to represent their beloved bandmate and show "reverence" for the group's legacy. He told Billboard: "It's a high bar, not just technically, but emotionally. There has to be a reverence for the missing brother and founder, and there also has to be reverence for the legacy — both for Chris' work and Chris' creativity, as well as the regard and reverence we have for ourselves collectively and for each other. Some suggestions have come out; I'm not prepared to share that, but I'll just say it's a higher bar than the usual composite of guitarists and drummers or singers." Kim admitted Soundgarden were part of the alternative scene that didn't pay too much attention to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, after Chris inducted Heart into the Hall in 2013, and drummer Matt Cameron was inducted as part of Pearl Jam, they had a change of heart. Chris was blown away by the "enthusiasm of the fans" when he took part in Heart's induction and realised how important the validation is. The frontman tragically took his own life in 2017 aged 52. Soundgarden's last album was 2012's 'King Animal'.

Soundgarden gets inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Soundgarden has finally made it into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Why it matters: The band, a pioneer in Seattle's grunge scene, was one of seven acts inducted into the Rock Hall Sunday night in the performer category. Seven other acts were nominated but fell short — much like Soundgarden did in 2020 and 2023, when the group received a nod but didn't make the final cut. Catch up quick: The band — formerly headed by the late Chris Cornell — is known for tracks including " Black Hole Sun," " Rusty Cage," " Spoonman," " Outshined" and " Fell on Black Days." The group formed in Seattle in the 1980s. What they're saying: "Soundgarden's foray into the mainstream paved the way for Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and other grunge bands," the Rock Hall wrote when nominating Soundgarden. "The groundwork they laid for countless hard rock and metal bands was essential, and their influence and legacy continue to resonate across generations." The big picture: The six other acts inducted in the performer category last night were Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast and The White Stripes. A handful of other acts received different honors, including Salt-N-Pepa, which snagged a musical influence award.

Chris Cornell Charts A New Posthumous Top 10 Hit

Audioslave's 'Like a Stone' climbs to No. 10 on Billboard's Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart, marking ... More the band's first top 10 on the tally. American rock band Audioslave performs on stage, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 11, 2003. Pictured is singer Chris Cornell. (Photo by) Audioslave may no longer be an active band since the tragic loss of frontman Chris Cornell years ago, but that doesn't mean people aren't still listening to the music that the group left behind. More than 20 years after it first introduced the supergroup to the world, 'Like a Stone' is still racking up enough plays to make an appearance on the Billboard rankings. This week, the single reaches a new high on one genre-specific tally, giving Audioslave a rare chart win. 'Like a Stone' moves up just one space on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart, but that single rung makes a big difference. The tune rises from No. 11 to No. 10, officially breaking into the top 10 on that list for the first time. The tally, which ranks the most-streamed hard rock tracks in the U.S. across platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, has never seen Audioslave rock this high before. Despite being one of the most respected rock bands of the early 2000s, Audioslave has only ever reached the Hard Rock Streaming Songs ranking with 'Like a Stone.' That means this frame's new peak is also the band's first trip into the top 10 on that list. While 'Like a Stone' originally arrived more than two decades ago, it only found space on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart for the first time in August 2024. Since then, it's racked up 15 nonconsecutive frames, falling off of the list, only to return again – and in this instance, climb higher than ever. Audioslave isn't the only Cornell-backed act charting this week. Soundgarden, the band that first made the late singer a rock icon, is also present on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs tally. This frame, the group's classic 'Black Hole Sun' keeps at No. 17. That single has proven to be one of Soundgarden's most celebrated smashes, as it has now spent 60 weeks on the roster, and previously peaked at No. 5. Audioslave was formed by combining members of two powerhouse rock outfits: Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden. The band released its self-titled debut album in 2002, and 'Like a Stone' quickly emerged as its breakout hit. The track became an early rock 2000s staple, thanks in part to Cornell's unmistakable vocals and a slow-burning melody that fans are clearly still enjoying to this day, decades later.

Northwestern study shows how black holes can spin together in a Valentine's embrace

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- Love and black holes generally do not go together. Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun"— with its references to summer stench, a dead-looking sky, and times being gone for honest men sometimes far too long for snakes — is a classic, but not a slow dance number for a wedding reception. A person described as an emotional black hole is universally described as a person with whom relationships are best avoided. But it may be time to give a second look at the concepts of love and black holes — in this case, actual black holes out in space. In a study announced just in time for Valentine's Day, Northwestern University astrophysicists found that binary black holes — when they form in crowded clusters of stars — align their spins, merge together, and end up looking like a cute little heart as their streams of debris glide about. Stars have to be sacrificed for this to happen. Simulations by Northwestern scientists showed the black holes black holes gliding around the discotheque of space end up slamming into massive stars. The black holes rip the stars apart and consume their stellar debris—becoming more massive, Northwestern explained. The additional mass increases the black holes' gravitational pull, and their spins — which start out random and chaotic — end up realigning themselves into the same direction as they orbit one another, Northwestern said. Northwestern said the result is the black holes' debris tails spinning into celestial harmony — and looking like a heart with cartoon eyes. While the visual is striking when seen in simulation, the study has also brought about an important new understanding about the behavior of black holes. "This discovery challenges the common belief that black holes formed in star clusters always have randomly distributed spins." Northwestern physics and astronomy grad student Fulya Kıroğlu, who led the study, said in a news release. The study will be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The band, a pioneer in Seattle's grunge scene, is known for tracks like " Black Hole Sun," " Rusty Cage" and " Fell on Black Days." Zoom out: The other Rock Hall nominees this year, in alphabetical order, are: Bad Company, The Black Crowes, Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Maná, Oasis, Outkast, Phish and The White Stripes.
