IHSAA girls state track: Bloomington South 'crushes it' for best finish ever at finals
INDIANAPOLIS — Everything had been building toward a big finish like this. Then again, Bloomington South coaches and athletes looked around them and realized they're just getting started. No Panther team has ever performed like this at the IHSAA Girls State Track and Field Championships, held at North Central High School this year. Most points ever scored? Check. Highest finish ever? Check. Advertisement Two state champions, one with a state record. Two mauled school records bookended the day as South won five state medals and took third place with 37 points Saturday, June 7, all scored by sophomores and juniors. "We've had such a really amazing season," South coach Jill Rensink said. "The challenge in my brain do we get to the state meet and are we still at that level? And man, they came out and they did exactly what we needed them to do. They surpassed what we thought we could do. "I'm kind of speechless. Third is amazing. Off-the-charts crazy. I'm proud of how they came in and competed and fought for every single spot and every single second. And they're all coming back." Boys state track: Record-setting day leads to trophy for Bloomington North boys Advertisement Junior Ellie Barada was the star of the show and about the only thing that went wrong all day for her was the pronunciation of her last name when she took to the medal stand. She won the open 800 and anchored the 3,200 relay to a win and the 1,600 to fourth by winning the second heat. "It was a great day," Barada said. "Walking away with two state championships and a fourth place in the four-by-four and third place as a team is pretty dang good. Don't know if I could ask for more." Her co-stars had a day, too. Sophomore Lexi Kollbaum was fourth in the 1,600 and on both relays while sophomore Mary Asplund had a career best in the first heat of the 800 to earn a surprise eighth. Aurelia Martoglio was 10th in the 3,200 with twin sister Jasmine posting a career best for 12th and her all-important third leg of the 3,200 gave Barada plenty of cushion between her and Carmel. Advertisement South's two titles were the school's first on the track since 1989, with only two field event titles in 2002 and 2012 since then. "It didn't feel real most of the time," Kollbaum said. "But I'm glad we came in and got it done. We stayed consistent and got better." Indoors or out, South relay ruled Barada anchored the 3,200 relay to a comfortable win in an incredible 8:51.35 that took 21 seconds off the old outdoor record and took down Eastern Greentown's mark of 8:53.74 in 2013. "Each of those legs, all three of the girls before me, really pushed the pace," Barada said. "They were up there with the front pack, made it their goal to pass the baton off first. So, when I got it in first, I was feeling really good and knew we were going to put down a fast time. Advertisement "I just didn't know how fast it would be. It was crazy." It certainly helped the team's confidence that South had beaten the Greyhounds at indoor state in that race while going a 9:06. "I think those four stepped on the track knowing what we ran at indoors to beat them, that we were faster now," Rensink said. "And they crushed it." South and Carmel were neck-and-neck after Kollbaum and Asplund posted a pair of 2:12 splits and handed off to Jasmine Martoglio. When she took off and gave the Panthers a three-second lead, no way was Barada going to lose that race, winning it by 2.1 seconds. "I felt like I knew when the Carmel girl went out really hard, I was like, 'Just stay with her, she's going to come back,'" Jasmine said. "And, she did. I was happy I got to surge past her. It felt really good." Advertisement Barada was after the state record in the 800 (2:04.95) but still won in 2:07.30, four seconds ahead of the pack. "My goal was to get the record but not knowing what the competition was going to look like, just pushing myself," Barada said. "I didn't get that but I'm happy with the win. Hopefully, I can come back in two weeks at nationals and get that time that I want." The 1,600 relay also blew away its previous best mark of 3:56.67 as Barada took care of business again, pulling South into the lead and a 3:53.02. "I've been so excited to get a race like that where I'm being pushed," Barada said. "I'm coming from behind. I really wanted to win that second heat because it would give us the best opportunity to place. If there's anybody in front of me, I do my best to gut it out." Advertisement Those relays are only getting faster. "It's so exciting," Asplund said. "Especially knowing none of us are seniors, so we'll be back next year and we can break that record again. It's so rare to have this great of a team." Group effort for South Kollbaum went on to turn a 4:54.31 for fourth in the 1,600. She was in eighth at the halfway mark in 2:30. "I feel like it probably maybe went out a little slow, so it was more technical," Kollbaum said. "But that's fine, I'm fine with that. I'm happy that I still got it done." Asplund went out quick in the 800 with a 64-second first lap and finished in 2:12.89 and on the heels of North Central's Kaelina Matthews, who wound up sixth overall. Advertisement "People told me if I won my heat, I'd have a chance at being podium," Asplund said. "And I knew that in my head, but I wasn't sure that I'd be able to win. I was close. This finish line is so far back, oh my gosh, it just kept going, and she barely got me. "But I was so happy. That was my goal. I was glad I could stand on the podium with Ellie even though I wasn't right next to her." Jasmine Martoglio ended up 12th in the 3,200 in a career best 10:43.54. "It was really fun the whole time," Jasmine said. "I just wanted to come in here and have a good time and that's what I did." Aurelia Martoglio took a most patient approach to the 3,200 and it may have cost her. Advertisement She was still 21st halfway through, then started her move. 17th, then 15th and 11th going into the final 400. Runners started to drop off and moved all the way up to ninth before Ava Jarrell of Pendleton Heights came out of nowhere to nip her at the line by .13 for the last medal. "I was definitely trying to make up ground," Aurelia said. "I was going for it even though I didn't know if I'd get a medal or anything, but I'll stay hungry." So will all her teammates. Carmel won the team title 54-46 over Hamilton Southeastern and let out a big yell when it was announced, momentarily interrupting South's post-meet huddle. Advertisement "Next year," Rensink promised. "That's going to be us." Eastern Greene star goes out in a Blais Senior Lilyanna Blais wasn't caught up in the moment of his first and only run at the state finals. She embraced every bit of it, including a few flying elbows in a slow-starting 1,600. She got outside the fray and carried it through for a 5:04.57 that took another small notch out of her school record before she heads off to run at Southern Indiana. It was an interesting day all around. The 1,600 had to be restarted after a Carmel runner was tripped on the opening curve and needed treatment. But Blais got off to another good start and navigated the crowd by running the first lap in Lane 2 and eventually finishing 14th. Advertisement "It's just so awesome," Blais said. "It's been my biggest dream since I was a freshman. I actually never thought it was possible then. I looked to those people and thought it was so cool. "And then this year I came in and saw what Ellie Barada was running and thought, I had no chance. I thought last year was my year and I missed it. But once I saw all the cards align, I was like, 'This is my year.' And I am so beyond blessed and lucky that God led me here and I got this opportunity to run." Big effort from No. 5 player helps Bloomington South extend boys golf sectional streak
Bloomington South got a big save from its resident goalie. After the top four scores came in at the rain-delayed Bloomington North boys golf sectional Monday, June 9, the Panthers' run of 10 straight sectional titles was in a bit of jeopardy, with South and Bedford North Lawrence tied for first at 308. Advertisement But Gerber, keeper for the state runner-up boy soccer team last fall, played the No. 5 spot and turned in a 79 at soggy Cascades Golf Course, lowering the Panthers' score to 306 and the title. BNL (308) and Bloomington North (312), led by a pair of 76s from Hogan Conder and Alec Freund, was third to grab the last team spot. Seymour (321) was fourth and Edgewood (322) was fifth with one of its best team efforts of the season, and those schools provided all three individual qualifiers as Mustang freshman Teigen Hulbert's 79 kept his season alive. Owen Valley was 11th (382) and Lighthouse Christian shot a 480 in its first time playing at sectional. "You've got to have a 3-4-5," said South coach Dustin Carver, who graduated his top three seniors in Happy Gilmore, Connor Byon and Luke Garrett in 2024. "They've got to just stay steady. They don't have to play spectacular golf, just good golf and produce a score hopefully under 80. "Owen Gerber has played absolutely fantastic the last five weeks since I've had him. It's been nice to see." It's been an interesting season for the Panthers, with several ups and downs, including a change in head coaches with Darin Woodley relieved of duties and Carver coming back for the last month of the season. But they got the job done. Advertisement "I'm just proud of them fighting and coming out and fighting and putting up a good score," Carver said. "Our schedule is set up to play the toughest teams and the toughest courses, so going to our conference and out here should feel comfortable to them. "But three of the five, this is their first go-around at sectional, so just super pleased." Hot start lifts Watson to medalist Colton Watson was South's ace with a three-under 68. He shot a 32 on the front nine and played the back in par to earn medalist honors. Watson joins Happy Gilmore (2), Nick Bellush, Drew Todd (2), Joe Weiler, Nick Burris and Sam Karcher as sectional medalists during the current 11-year team title run. Advertisement "I started out pretty hot," Watson said. "I was hitting the driver good, had a couple good wedge shots, like on 3, hit it within eight foot and made it. I was just striking it really well, hitting it in good spots, giving myself chances for birdie and making pars." It took a team effort to top the Stars with Aidan Bomba and Gerber's 79s and an 80 from Owen Wisley counting. Carson Gady, under the weather Carver said, had an 82. Wisley had a 37 on the back after a tough 43. "Those boys battled," Carver said. "Just really pleased with where they are at and hopefully, we can go down to regional and make some noise there." BNL breaks ice, makes regional The Stars were hoping that 13 might be their lucky number, as it's been that many years (2012) since their last sectional title, but it wasn't to be. Still, BNL is back to regional for the first time since 2022. Advertisement Evan Tillett led the effort with a 1-under 70. Nick Bellush added a 77 and close behind were Parker Foddrill 80, Drew McKee 81 and Hudson Martin 82. "Really proud of the way the guys played today and obviously Evan came up and played really well," BNL coach Trey Turner said. "I thought that the ball-striking was very good today. We kept the ball in the fairway most of the day between the tree line and hit greens, which is the most important thing. "So just really proud of the way we played and now it's time to get ready for the regional." Tillett opened with a 34 on the Quarry 9 and played the Pine in par to finish second. Advertisement "He switched drivers I think literally yesterday," Turner said. "He's had about three or four different drivers this year, but this one was working. Every drive I saw him hit was right down the middle so I think that was just setting him up to hit greens and make the birdies that he did and just make easy pars." North comes through There looked to be a tight race for the top three spots and by the end, just 16 shots separated first from fifth. Senior Hogan Conder and sophomore Alec Freund carded 76s to lift the Cougars, who were fourth after nine holes. But every Cougar improved their score on the longer Pine, led by Freund going 1-under (35) and Conder at 37 to rally to regional. "We've made it out every year I've played on the team so it's good to continue that. "I wasn't playing good at all. My short game really saved me today. I wasn't hitting any greens and if I would have been able to hit any greens ... Sand shots really killed me today." But he knew he had to stick with it for North to have a chance. "I just took it as every shot mattered," Conder said. Zayan Farzad had a 79 while playing out of the No. 1 spot with Rex Speer rounding out the top four with an 81. Advertisement "Sometimes, playing No. 1 is not about who the best golfer is but who is the most consistent," North coach Harrison Carmichael said. "He's been our most consistent lately and he's represented the program well." Edgewood freshman Hulbert escapes Hulbert stumbled out of the gate at 6-over on the front (including a quadruple bogey 8 on No. 3) before coming back with a 38 to save his season. "I'm very impressed," Hulbert said. "I'm glad I was able to come back and fight tooth and nail on the back. I didn't really hit the ball great today, so my scrambling really helped me." It earned him his first trip to regional. Advertisement "It means everything to me," Hulbert said. "I'm a freshman. From the start of the season, I wanted to go to regionals, and I get to be with more competition, which I love." Calvin McDonald and Hank Ripley just missed being in the mix with 80s, while Zayne Dwigans had an 83. It was another near miss, but a solid effort from the top four all the same. Ike Wilkie played the back in 43 to card a 91. "Good thing is, Teigan's back, Hank's back, Ike's back," Lee said. "I knew we would have to have two or three guys break 80 to have a chance. We had an 80, 80, 79, so we were not far off. "We all know we had things we could have done better but that's the best we've played all year. So, you can't really complain when they play the best they've played all year together. I don't know what else you could ask for." Eastern Greene on hold The Terre Haute Sectional at Hulman Links was completely rained out on Monday and will be played on Tuesday, starting at 9 a.m. Qualifiers will also head to the Washington Regional on Thursday.
