Bluefield State University states its mining program suits President Trump's policies
BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS) — Bluefield State University released a statement where administrators said their Mining Engineering Technology program 'perfectly aligns' with President Donald Trump's coal policies. According to a press release, the program, which is in its second year, is in step with President Trump's policies which emphasize that coal is essential to security of the nation's economy. Our Mining Engineering Technology program aligns with the goals of President Trump's coal initiative. The President aims to reduce federal regulations, promote coal use, boost exports, and ensure fair treatment of coal production in federal policy, all of which aim to increase coal production. Similarly, our program focuses on training skilled professionals who will help strengthen America's energy independence. Dr. Darrin Martin | President, Bluefield State University The degree program supports priorities laid out by President Trump through different approaches, the release stated. It addresses the shortage of mining professionals needed to put in place the President's goals for increased domestic coal production. Our students learn cutting-edge mining technologies and processes that align with the Administration's focus on efficient resource utilization. This includes training in automation, safety systems, and extraction methods that maximize production while meeting regulatory requirements. This balanced approach allows for the industry's growth while addressing regulatory requirements and stakeholder concerns. President Trump's policy recognizes what we've long understood at Bluefield State—coal remains fundamental to American energy security. Our program prepares professionals who can implement this vision through technical expertise and innovation. BSU students get jump-start on nursing careers
bluefield – Students swore an oath Wednesday and committed to a nursing career as they joined a new program for nurturing the region's next generation of health care professionals. Bluefield State University celebrated its inaugural JumpStart Nursing Program signing ceremony Wednesday at its new Medical Education Center housed in the former Bluefield Regional Medical Center. The JumpStart Program provides participants with a comprehensive approach to launching their nursing careers. Students receive guaranteed early acceptance into Bluefield State's AD Nursing program, ensuring their place in this competitive field, university officials said. The program offers personalized one-on-one advising from experienced nursing faculty, who provide tailored guidance to help students navigate their academic and professional journey. 'High School seniors have a lot of things to consider when choosing their educational path,' said Sandra Wynn, director of BSU's Associate Degree Nursing Program. 'The purpose of the JumpStart program is to take some of the stress off of them and make their decisions easier by offering them an early acceptance into the program, early financial aid and educational counseling, and funding to pay for their textbooks and uniforms.' Eleven students, representing both local communities and distant locations like Colorado, attended Wednesday's ceremony. Recognizing the financial challenges students often face, Bluefield State University provides up to $500 in financial assistance to help cover essential expenses such as uniforms and textbooks, officials said during Wednesday's ceremony. This support reflects the university's commitment to reducing barriers to education and supporting students' professional development. 'By taking some of the burdens of preparing for college, our hope is to ease their transition into university life and to give them every opportunity to be successful in the nursing program at Bluefield State University,' Wynn said. The annual signing ceremony also serves as a celebration of the students' potential and achievement, bringing together participants, their families and university leadership to mark this milestone, university officials said. The selected students will benefit from a proven program that bridges the gap between high school and higher education, providing them with a head start in their nursing education. People interested in applying to Bluefield State University's nursing program can contact the university's admissions office for further information. Applications are open through April 18.
