KHSD to propose changes to policy about protecting students' information from immigration enforcement

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern High School District made proposed revisions to the school district's response to immigration enforcement and protection of students' personal information from outside agencies in its newly revised policy. During the district board meeting May 5, the board is expected to receive the first reading of several proposed revisions in the district's existing policies, according to the meeting agenda. Among them, Board Policy 5125 — a policy regarding student records — incorporated some changes to how the school district will respond to immigration enforcement on its student body. Trial date postponed in death of KHSD police chief The revised policy draft says all appropriate personnel at KHSD schools will be required to receive training regarding district policies and procedures not only for gathering and handling sensitive student information, but also which information should not be solicited. The new draft also says student records can't be given to another person, agency or organization for immigration enforcement without a warrant. This is in addition to the existing list, which included the parents' consent, a court order or a judicial subpoena. The draft still stated the district or its employees cannot compile a list, registry or database collecting students' nationality, ethnicity or religious affiliation or disclose that information to federal government authorities for immigration enforcement. Another addition to the policy ordered the superintendent to develop protocols to comply with a court's restraining order that prohibits a party from accessing records and information about a particular student. The board was recommended to receive the proposed revisions to Board Policy 5125 on Monday, according to the agenda. Action is anticipated to take place June 9. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
