Stolen vehicle chase that spanned Valley began in Boardman

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — First News has learned more information on the origins of a chase that spanned several Valley communities this weekend. While on a routine patrol, an officer with the Boardman Police Department recognized a blue Hyundai Sonata traveling on California Avenue that was reported as stolen from Meadowbrook Avenue. The officer then initiated a traffic stop, noting the car was slow to stop but eventually ended up at the intersection of Boardman Poland Road and South Avenue. When the officer exited his car and began to approach the car reported as stolen, reports state the vehicle then drove away down South Avenue. As the car fled and the officer attempted the stop, it then entered the area of an OVI checkpoint where reports state it entered the wrong lane and was hit by stop sticks deployed by an Austintown lieutenant working the checkpoint. However, the vehicle continued down South Avenue, at which point numerous law enforcement officers engaged in a pursuit that was eventually terminated in the area of East Indianola Avenue. Reports state the pursuit lasted around 6 minutes and covered just over 5 miles. Police say traffic was light at the time and the maximum speed was around 66 mph. The pursuit then continued into Youngstown, through Weathersfield and into Warren. Eventually, the driver, identified by police as 19-year-old Travon Pearce, was arrested. Say hello to Jack, Boardman's new K-9

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — Boardman Police Department is putting their paws together for the newest member of the team. Jack is a Belgian Malinois who came to the Valley all the way from Belgium to train at Shallow Creek Kennels. He's not quite two years old and has been on the job for just about two weeks. He and his human partner, Officer Angelo Pasquale, recently became certified as a dual-purpose canine team. 'Being a police officer is important to me, to make sure our community's safe,' Pasquale said. 'And Jack likes to work hard, so us together, I think we make a great team.' Jack is able to locate drugs like methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine. He can also conduct building searches, area searches, track people, and locate evidence. 'Any time he's working, he's playing, so everything he does out here is all fun,' Pasquale said. Jack is trained using his favorite toy — a ball. 'To me, he just wants to play,' Pasquale said. 'When he locates the drugs, he believes his ball is going to be there, he believes it's his ball so he can play.' The pair have formed a bond over their 6-week training course together, one that will only strengthen the longer they're on the job. They're taking over for the last K-9 officer pair, who retired. 'We try to stay busy. I like to work and he likes to work, so any time we're able to utilize his skills, it's a benefit to the community.' After a hard day's work, Pasquale and Jack go outside to play in the yard before going to bed and getting ready to do it all over again. 'He definitely knows when I'm getting ready for work because he'll start to bark or whine a little bit,' Pasquale said. 'He definitely wants to get in the car to get to work.' Boardman will also be adding a second K-9 to the team later this spring. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ICE contacted after man presents fake documents to BMV in Boardman

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — A man was arrested in Boardman after an investigation between BMV employees and police determined he was using a fake social security card in an attempt to secure an Ohio ID. Officers were called to the BMV on Boardman-Canfield Road just after 9 a.m. Wednesday after a BMV employee reported a man attempting to obtain an Ohio ID card presented counterfeit documents, according to a police report. Police ran the man's social security number through their systems but found no information on the name listed on the documents. Reports state the fake social security card had a different seal, coloring and 'an obviously different feel' and lacked the hologram visible under UV light, the report stated. The man's resident card had darker coloring, lacked holograms, and had a visible rather than mirrored strip as authentic cards have, according to reports. A BMV investigator confirmed both documents were counterfeit. The man, who used an employee as a translator to speak to police, said he works at a local Mexican restaurant and provided police with a recent paystub and W-2. Police were unable to confirm the man's identity and placed him under arrest for forgery. A sergeant with the Boardman Police Department contacted Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE), who advised if the man was presenting fake documents, he was likely unregistered. The U.S. Attorney was contacted and a detainer was placed on the court case so the man could not post bond until an investigation is completed and his identity is verified.
