‘Rivers of Babylon stayed at number one for 10 weeks – I think ABBA knocked us off'
Born on the Caribbean island of Montserrat in 1961, Maizie Ursula Williams moved to the UK when she was nine. In 1973 she won a Birmingham Beauty Pageant. In 1974, she was one of the original members of Boney M when she joined in West Germany. Guided by producer Frank Farian, they sold 100 million records with euro-disco anthems.

Melksham sports clubs hope to host music festivals at stadium
A football and rugby stadium may host regular live music events over several days if the clubs are successful in securing planning Town Football Club and Melksham Rugby Club hope to host music events at Oakfield Stadium lasting between one and four days, with a build and break phase before and after each clubs want permission to erect temporary structures including stages, bars and marquees, with the hope of hosting the Wiltshire Throwback Festival as its first live music event on 20 and 21 is anticipated the festival will attract up to 3,000 people per day, with the line-up including Boney M's Liz Mitchell, So Solid Crew, and Tinchy Stryder. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reports the festival will find out on Wednesday if it has secured the live music and alcohol licences needed for the event to go of the Wiltshire Throwback Festival aim to arrive on site on 16 June and begin erecting structures the following down the stages and other temporary structures from 22 June.A number of risk assessments were submitted to Wiltshire Council last week, covering medical assessments, fire risks, noise management, waste management, drugs and alcohol, and security. The traffic management plan, updated following consultation with Wiltshire Police and the highways authority, anticipates 875 cars parking at the site each day, along with 375 taxi drop-offs and roads will be closed to all but residents to prevent festivalgoers parking Community School's car park will also be used for drop-offs and would finish at 23:00, with Timmy Mallet, Artful Dodger, 911, and Dick and Dom - who will be DJing - among the other 80s, 90s, and 00s acts billed on the festival's line-up.

When rain dampened disco group Boney M's Hong Kong debut
'More than $1 million worth of sound equipment – 12 tons of it – will arrive here next month, accompanied by 31 musicians, dressers, secretaries, technicians, and stage road crew which comprise the four member group Boney M ,' reported the South China Morning Post on April 16, 1979. Credit: SCMP Archives 'The group was first conceived in Germany by its manager, Mr Frank Farian, in 1976, and its first big hit was 'Daddy Cool'. Since then there have been a string of hits including 'Love For Sale', 'Ma Baker', 'Belfast', 'Rivers of Babylon', 'Brown Girl in the Ring' and 'Rasputin'. 'They have also done tours of the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe and fairly recently Russia, where they proved to be very popular. Photo: SCMP Archives 'The group's agent, Mr Bryan Miller [said], 'They asked us to tone down the sexy parts, which we couldn't understand as the girls are beautiful, the costumes are good and the show is not at all sexily oriented. Anyway we went ahead as if we were doing a show in Europe and everybody had a good time.' On May 15, the Post reported that 'The original show, scheduled for Saturday was cancelled early in the day when it became apparent that the rain would not abate. Even though it eventually did, the rain was back again on Sunday, thus pre-empting that evening's concert. Yesterday dawned with more of the same, but the promoter, Mr Pato Leung , held off the inevitable cancellation until about 4pm. But not to worry, Mr Leung said yesterday. Following engagements in Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, Boney M will be back to fulfil its Hong Kong commitment. 'If, however, rain once again forces cancellation of the show on those evenings, there will be no 'sixth' chance.'
