Father of man wrongfully arrested on murder charges seeks to clear son's name

9 Investigates is uncovering new details in the arrest of a man wrongfully accused of murder. Channel 9 obtained hundreds of pages of newly released documents that show how DNA initially pointed to Yesnin Salvado Bonilla-Iscoa for the 2023 murder of a woman stabbed to death in her car. A nearly 300-page document released by the State Attorney's office details how a communal kitchen knife used by Bonilla and the now accused murderer, Luis Narvaez, led to the DNA confusion. Yesnin Bonilla's family says that for months, Bonilla was painted as a killer. Bonilla's father spoke exclusively with Channel 9 to clear his son's name. 'My son is a good person and a hard worker,' said Freddy Bonilla in Spanish, 'I'm speaking to clear his name. Because this was a mistake, and he didn't do anything.' On Monday, Channel 9 obtained an audio recording of Bonilla's in-custody interview with detectives taken after his arrest. Yesnin Bonilla expressed confusion and desperation, telling detectives he couldn't understand how he got mixed up in a murder case during the 2-hour interview. 'I would never kill a person. How could I do that. I don't understand what's happening,' said Bonilla, in the Spanish interview. According to Orange County deputies, Bonilla's phone was the last to call the victim, Maria De Los Angeles Paulino. Plus, his DNA was found on the murder weapon, a knife used to stab Paulino 16 times. According to detectives, Yesnin admitted to knowing the victim because he had previously purchased drugs from her, but he told detectives on the night of the murder that his roommate, Luis Alfredo Narvaez, was with her and admitted to killing her. Deputies said a DNA sample was taken and later confirmed that Luis' blood matched the blood found in the car where Maria was murdered. According to detectives, Narvaez ultimately confessed to killing her. 'Even though there's DNA that may be at the scene of the crime, that doesn't necessarily mean the person whose DNA was left behind is the killer, and that's precisely what this shows,' said Criminal Defense Attorney Thomas Fighter, with Fighter Law. Bonilla's Father told Channel 9 his whole family suffered for months as Yesnin was labelled an accused killer. According to Freddy Bonilla, Yesnin came to this country from Honduras to work and provide for his wife, who's now expecting a child. Feddy Bonilla told Channel 9, his son Yesnin was released from jail and had been living in Texas with his wife, however he was recently picked up by ICE and faces deportation. This chef ran one of the Bay Area's best popups. Now he's opening his own spot

An Oakland popup known for late night eats is graduating into a full-blown bar and restaurant. Chisme is moving out of its sultry lair inside Oakland's Low Bar and over to 347 14th St., where the Kon-Tiki shook Mai Tais until its closing in December. Chef Manuel Bonilla said the new Bar Chisme will be more of a dive bar, with a small cocktail program with a few original drinks to complement his Filipino-Salvadoran cooking. Gone are the tropical trappings of the previous tiki bar for what will be a more casual, yet eclectic look. 'We're going for 'abuelita's house on acid'. Very homey and very chill,' he said. The owners of the Kon-Tiki, Christ Aivaliotis and Matt Reagan, shut down their popular spot late last year after seven years in business. Bonilla is familiar with the new location: He was the Kon-Tiki's opening chef. But his choice to return to the space amounts to a bet on the future of downtown Oakland, as Aiviolitis wrote in a profanity-laden screed that business in downtown Oakland was nearly impossible. Aivaliotis and Reagan approached Bonilla and his business partners to take over their old corner space. Bonilla is keeping the operation as minimal as possible to protect himself from increasing costs. Unlike its predecessor, there won't be any servers and all orders must be placed and picked up at the bar. The vision: 'Straight up no-frills, but with Chisme's food,' he said. Bonilla's resume isn't just dive bar food. It includes Oakland's two Michelin-starred Commis, and he currently works at modern Salvadoran restaurant Popoca. At Chisme, Bonilla's dishes have included yucca smothered in black beans, rich sisig pupusas and handmade chicken nuggets. Bar Chisme's menu will lean in a similar direction with the addition of a smashburger and a grilled burger. The house cocktails will feature ingredients like rums and agave distillates, also reflecting that influence. Chisme took over Low Bar's kitchen in March of last year after the venue's owners announced they were ending their kitchen program. Chisme had made appearances as a popup before settling into its residency. Bonilla's cooking and being the only open kitchen until close to midnight made Chisme a magnet for late night diners or an excuse to stick around for another drink. Chronicle restaurant critic Cesar Hernandez praised Bonilla's vision, which went from playful to layered. Dishes like tortas stuffed with lechon fuse cultural cues from his Filipino and Salvadoran background. 'His style is loose and fun but never misses a chance to impress, like the family member who steals the show on the dance floor,' he wrote. Chisme was ranked among the best new restaurants of 2024.

Manchester Alderman Tony Sapienza won't seek reelection

Manchester Ward 5 Alderman Tony Sapienza announced Tuesday night he will not seek reelection to the seat this fall. Tony Sapienza Tony Sapienza 'I want to thank the people, the residents of Ward 5,' Sapienza said. 'I've been in this seat for 10 years as of this week, and I want to thank the people for the opportunity, for allowing me to represent them, and I want them to know that I do not intend to be filing for reelection in the upcoming filing period. 'We do have a young man named Jason Bonilla who has stepped up and is running for the seat. He's a fine young man, and I sure would like to see some young people on this board.' Mayor Jay Ruais thanked Tony Sapienza for his service. 'These are tough jobs, as you know, often they are thankless jobs, and anybody that puts their name on the ballot deserves a great deal of respect,' Ruais said. 'I look forward to finishing this term,' Sapienza said. Jason Bonilla, a school board member from Ward 5, announced in April he will run for the Ward 5 alderman seat in a video posted on social media. Speaking in both Spanish and English, Bonilla said he's ready to move 'on to the next chapter.' 'I'm running for alderman in Ward 5 to support all of our city departments, including our public schools, and to strengthen our businesses, especially our local ones,' Bonilla said. 'I will fight to keep our streets and parks clean and safe, to ensure our sidewalks are accessible and our roads are well-maintained, and work with law enforcement to remove fentanyl and opioids from our streets.' Bonilla said he is also committed to tackling the housing crisis, ensuring affordable options and reducing homelessness. 'I will do this by collaborating with local organizations and city departments, because no one in our community should be forgotten,' Bonilla said. Bonilla was appointed to the Board of School Committee in 2021, after Jeremy Dobson resigned his seat prior to moving out of the city. Bonilla was elected to the school board in 2023. Bonilla, a Salvadoran American, worked with AmeriCorps for two years in the Boston and Washington, D.C., public schools 'showing black and brown youth that we existed, that we were out here ready to advocate for them, to listen to them, and to push to them to follow their dreams.' Bonilla landed a career as a recruiter for City Year in Manchester, going from 'squeegeeing throw-up at Forest Hills' in Boston to recruiting young people of color across the region to serve as peer mentors in the Queen City. Bonilla was nominated for the Ward 5 school board seat by Tony Sapienza.
