SCSD to no longer offer alternative program, Syracuse mom voices concern

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A Syracuse mom is sharing her frustration with the Syracuse City School District after learning that the alternative program her son with special needs is enrolled in will no longer be offered in fall the fall of 2025. Patricia Bonville's son will be wrapping up his junior year at Promising Futures Leadership Academy, which operates out of the Johnson Center on East Genesee Street. Bonville said her son has autism and an IEP. 'My son only has one more year left, and he really wanted to graduate here. Now he can't,' said Bonville. Bonville said her son has been in the PFLA program since his freshman year, and it worked well for him. 'He's very upset because he has a disability, so of course he doesn't do well with change,' said Bonville. But change is coming. The Syracuse City School District said PFLA and the Oasis Academy, which operates out of Elmwood on South Ave., will not be offered next school year. Instead, the district will be rolling out three new programs — one for each school level. The programs will follow the same school calendar. The district said the new alternative programs will be housed in all high schools, as well as a few elementary and middle schools. More resources and support will also be available to all students. But Bonville said she worries about her son's academic future. 'The children that are in these schools are there because they have problems and they need the school that they're at,' said Bonville. Bonville said she was never notified by the district and learned about the news from her son. 'My son came home from school last Tuesday and said that the staff, the teachers, here told him that they're closing at the end of the school year, which is June 26,' said Bonville. Bonville is now hoping to get some clarity. 'I would like more of an explanation and for them to give notification to all the parents because no one knew about this. It was just dropped on the students, and the students came home and told their parents,' said Bonville. The district said every family was contacted individually, including Bonville.
