File Photo by Archie Carpenter/UPI | License Photo SUNRISE, Fla., May 24 (UPI) -- Jesper Boqvist cycloned a defender and buried a backhanded wrister, igniting a third-period scoring surge Saturday in a Florida Panthers demolition of the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. The veteran forward, who moved up to the first line because of the injury absence of Panthers top scorer Sam Reinhart, scored the first of his team's five goals in the final period of the 6-2 triumph at Amerant Bank Arena. "Kudos to him," Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues said of Boqvist. "He is a smart player and can play with good players. Not playing in a week, he did a great job of staying ready, staying in shape. He stepped right in and made an immediate impact." The Panthers scored four times in just over four minutes as part of their late push, with two of those goals coming off the stick of forward Aleksander Barkov. The reigning champions can earn a sweep and third consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final with a win when they host the Hurricanes again in Game 4 on Monday in Sunrise, Fla. "Just one day at a time," said Barkov, who also logged an assist. "Right now we just need to focus on recovery and getting as much rest as possible." Boqvist logged two assists, in addition to his go-ahead score. Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves. Hurricanes net minder Pyotr Kochetkov, who replaced Frederik Andersen after he was benched in Game 2, allowed all six Panthers scores in Game 3. Panthers prowled around the Hurricanes net off the puck drop, putting several shots on frame, but failing to take the lead early on. They finally clawed ahead 1-0 with a fortunate bounce off defenseman Dmitry Orlov's skate in with 7:53 remaining in first period. Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola, who fired the puck through the crease from the right circle, received credit for the score. But the Panthers took a hit when forward Eetu Luostarinen received a five-minute major and was ejected with about three minutes remaining in the opening frame. The Hurricanes continued to come up empty against Bobrovsky until forward Logan Stankoven beat the Panthers' brick wall by poking in the puck during a power play with about five minutes remaining in the second period. That score resulted in a 1-1 deadlock to start the final frame. But the Panthers came alive in the third period, starting with Boqvist's brilliant finish just 89 seconds into the frame. Defenseman Aaron Ekblad started the play with a steal in the neutral zone. He then poked the puck ahead to forward Evan Rodrigues, who tapped it behind his back to Boqvist. The Panthers forward flew ahead with the puck to his left and turned around Orlav with his quick wrists before flipping his go-ahead score past Kochetkov. Forwards Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk assisted Mikkola for a third Panthers goal with 13:34 remaining. Tkachuk assisted Barkov for another score less than 30 seconds later. The Panthers went ahead 5-1 when Barkov beat Kochetkov once again with 10:29 remaining. The rout continued with a score from defenseman Brad Marchand 66 seconds later. Forward Seth Jarvis briefly stopped the bleeding with a Hurricanes goal off a power play with 8:59 remaining. That proved the be the final score of the night. The Panthers have now scored 34 of the last 43 goals scored over their last eight playoff games, dating back to the second period of their second-round series with Toronto. They will host Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals at 8 p.m. EDT Monday in Sunrise. Game 5, if necessary, will be Monday in Raleigh, N.C.

Dominant third period turns close Game 3 into another Panthers rout over Hurricanes

After a pair of blowout wins to begin the Eastern Conference final, the Florida Panthers were finally tested in Game 3 by the Carolina Hurricanes. Well, for two periods. But in the end, the Panthers' depth pushed them over their opponent — and now within one win of a return to the Stanley Cup Final. Forward Jesper Boqvist, who returned to the lineup with star winger Sam Reinhart sidelined with a lower-body injury, scored the go-ahead goal to start a five-goal onslaught in the third period to lift Florida to a 6-2 win over the Hurricanes on Saturday at Amerant Bank Arena. The Panthers are now up 3-0 in the best-of-7 series and are one win from advancing to the Stanley Cup Final for a third consecutive season. Game 4, their first chance to wrap up the series, is at 8 p.m. Monday from Amerant Bank Arena. Boqvist's goal, scored 1:29 into the third period, came after defenseman Aaron Ekblad forced a turnover at center ice. He fed the puck to Evan Rodrigues, who tapped the puck to Boqvist in stride entering the offensive zone. Boqvist charged down the ice and maneuvered past Hurricanes defenseman Dmitry Orlov before burying a pass past Carolina goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov. Florida was just getting started. Niko Mikkola made it 3-1 on a shot from the left circle on a feed from Sam Bennett 6:26 in to the third period. Mikkola also opened scoring 12:07 into regulation on backhanded shot that deflected off Orlov's stick and past Kochetkov, who started over Frederik Anderen on Saturday. It was just the second multi-goal game of Mikkola's career. However, Mikkola left the game in the third period after crashing into the boards, holding his right shoulder. And then Aleksander Barkov scored twice — at 6:55 and 9:31 of the period — to push the lead to 5-1. And then Brad Marchand scored on a two-on-one with Anton Lundell at 10:37 of the third period to make it 6-1. That's five goals in a span of 9:08 to go from a tied game to an absolute rout. Carolina's only responses came on the power play. The first was with 5:09 left in the second period when Logan Stankoven got a rebound of a Brent Burns shot and sent it just over Sergei Bobrovsky's left pad to tie the game at 1-1. Bobrovsky, who stopped the first 13 shots he faced to begin the game, had robbed Stankoven of a Grade A chance earlier in the period. The Hurricanes' Seth Jarvis then scored on the power play with 8:59 left to cut Florida's lead to 6-2. By that point, though, the game was all but over. This story will be updated.

Panthers on brink of their 3rd straight Stanley Cup Final after another rout of Hurricanes

SUNRISE, Fla. — Fifty-goal scorers who double as Selke finalists don't grow on trees, but as hard as figured to be for the Florida Panthers to replace injured forward Sam Reinhart, coach Paul Maurice made it crystal clear Saturday morning that they don't have the depth they think they have if one injury derails them. Advertisement Enter Jesper Boqvist out of the bullpen. Always ready when called upon, the forward played 78 regular-season games but has had to take a back seat this postseason. On Saturday night, Boqvist reentered the lineup and made it count, scoring a game-swinging goal 89 seconds into the third period. Schooling Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Dmitry Orlov on the play, Boqvist snapped a 1-1 tie to trigger a five-goal third-period explosion and utter dominance by the Panthers en route to a 6-2 pounding in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final. The win put the Carolina Hurricanes on the brink of elimination and the Panthers on the cusp of their third straight Stanley Cup Final appearance. Niko Mikkola scored his second goal of the game less than five minutes later, then Aleksander Barkov scored the first of two goals in a row 29 seconds later. Brad Marchand added another for good measure as a 1-1 game shockingly became 6-1 Panthers by the 10:37 mark. Barkov and Boqvist each finished with three points, while Evan Rodrigues and Matthew Tkachuk had two assists each. Sergei Bobrovsky, who has allowed eight goals in his past seven starts, made 23 saves. It was the Panthers' seventh consecutive win over the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final after sweeping them in 2023. In what was expected to be a low-scoring series, Carolina has been outscored 16-4 by Florida. Florida became the third team in the past 30 years to score five-plus goals in four consecutive postseason games, following the Colorado Avalanche (in 2024 and 2021 and the Detroit Red Wings in 1995. In an attempt to change the vibes, Canes coach Rod Brind'Amour started Pyotr Kochetkov over Freddie Andersen, who allowed nine goals in the first two games and was pulled after two periods in Game 2. Kochetkov entered the game 2-0 lifetime against Florida in the regular season with a .986 save percentage. Advertisement It worked for two periods until the wheels fell off the Hurricanes. The loss extended Carolina's losing streak in Eastern Conference final to 15 games after the Canes were swept in 2009, 2019 and 2023. The Hurricanes got a nightmarish game from Orlov, who was a well-earned minus-4. Carolina's blue line entered severely undermanned without defenseman Jalen Chatfield as well Sean Walker, who warmed up but couldn't go and was replaced by rookie Alexander Nikishin. Game 4 is Monday night. This story will be updated.

Sports Seriously The Carolina Hurricanes have their backs against the wall. They're fighting the defending champion Florida Panthers, who took both games in Raleigh, North Carolina, and now return home with a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. But the Hurricanes are also now fighting history, trying to snap an improbable 14-game losing streak in the conference final round that began in 2009. Can they do it and get back into the series? 'Just change the vibe a little bit,' Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said Saturday morning. 'I don't blame Freddy for any of the goals that went in.' Kochetkov played the third period of Game 2, giving up one goal on five shots after Andersen yielded four in the first two period. Kochetkov, who had a 2.60 goals-against average during the regular season, won Game 5 in the first round, 5-4 in overtime against the New Jersey Devils, in his lone previous start when Andersen missed that game because of an injury. Panthers coach Paul Maurice said Jesper Boqvist will play on the top line in Game 3 in place of injured Sam Reinhart. Boqvist had already played with Aleksander Barkov on that line when Evan Rodrigues was hurt. Rodrigues has returned, so the top line for Game 3 is Barkov, Rodrigues and Boqvist. "There's a familiarity there that lets those guys just go and play," Maurice said. Boqvist signed as a free agent in July and had 12 goals and 23 points during the regular season. He also kills penalties and scored a short-handed goal. He has a goal and an assist in nine games this postseason. Panthers forward Sam Reinhart won't play in Game 3 and is day-to-day after being injured during the team's 5-0 win in Game 2 against the Hurricanes. Reinhart was sent flying by a Sebastian Aho hit during the first period of Thursday's game and didn't return because of a lower-body injury. Reinhart plays on the top line with Aleksander Barkov and had 57 goals last season. He's a finalist (along with Barkov) for the Selke Trophy as top defensive forward after finishing with five short-handed goals.
