World Ovarian Cancer Day: Symptoms, Treatment And Who's At Higher Risk

Last Updated: While the exact cause of ovarian cancer remains unknown, family history, hormonal therapies, and genetic mutations may increase the likelihood of its development Cancer is a deadly disease that affects millions of people every year. Over time, it has become more severe and common, now affecting young people in their 30s as well. Cancer occurs when cells in any part of the body begin to grow abnormally and uncontrollably, and it can develop in any organ or tissue. Women are particularly vulnerable to certain types of cancer, one of which is ovarian cancer. This life-threatening condition claims the lives of many women each year. World Ovarian Cancer Day is observed annually on May 8. On this significant day, News18 spoke to doctors to understand how this disease can be detected early and what preventive measures can be taken. Dr Dimple Bordoloi, Head of the Laparoscopic Gynaecology Department at Mash Manas Hospital, Noida, told News18 that ovarian cancer is one of the most fatal cancers affecting women. It begins when the cells in the ovaries start growing abnormally. In the early stages, ovarian cancer typically presents no symptoms. However, as it progresses, symptoms such as abdominal bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, irregular periods, unexplained weight changes, changes in urinary or bowel habits, constipation, fatigue, and dizziness may appear, usually during stage 3 or 4. Dr Bordoloi explained that while the exact cause of ovarian cancer is still unknown, several risk factors may contribute to its development. Age is a significant factor, the risk increases as a woman gets older. A family history of ovarian cancer, hormonal therapies, and genetic mutations can also elevate the risk. If detected early, ovarian cancer can be treated effectively. Treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy are available and can offer relief and improve outcomes. Dr Priya Bansal, Consultant in the Gynaecology Oncosurgery Department at Fortis Hospital, Greater Noida, said that ovarian cancer has a high mortality rate largely because it is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. Since early symptoms are rare or non-specific, the disease often goes undetected until stage 3 or 4. If diagnosed at stage 3, a woman's five-year survival rate is only around 40 per cent. At stage 4, the survival rate drops to less than 20 per cent. Early detection significantly improves the chances of survival. Who Are At More Risk? Dr Priya noted that women who have never had children are at a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer. Other risk factors include endometriosis, complex ovarian masses, breast cancer, or a family history of ovarian cancer. To reduce the risk, women are advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle and follow a balanced diet. Regular medical check-ups are also essential. Some studies suggest that the use of oral contraceptives may lower the risk of ovarian cancer. First Published:

Day after attack on MP Pradyut Bordoloi's convoy, Assam Police blames expelled Congress leader

A day after a convoy of Congress leaders including Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi was attacked on Sunday, Assam police say that the attack was planned by a Congress member who was recently expelled from the party. Bordoloi and Batadrava MLA Sibamoni Bora had minor injuries and their vehicles were damaged after they were attacked by unidentified miscreants with rods and hockey sticks in Dhing in Nagaon district Sunday evening. They were travelling as part of their campaigning for the upcoming panchayat polls. Bordoloi had alleged Sunday that it was a premeditated attack orchestrated by the BJP. 'In my nearly three decades in politics, I have never seen such a breakdown of law and order in Assam as we are witnessing today under BJP rule. Violence is the last refuge of the desperate. No force can silence the will of the people, and our fight will only grow stronger,' he had stated. On Monday, Nagaon SP Swapnaneel Deka told reporters that the 'main suspect' in the attack is an individual named Imdadul Islam after an FIR was registered in connection with the incident on Sunday 'We have come to know that one Imdadul Islam, who was expelled from the Congress Sunday is behind this. There were some more people with him, who had come from the Lahorighat Bhuragaon area,' he said, adding that police are currently looking for the suspect. While Congress leaders have condemned the attack as pre-poll violence in the run-up to the panchayat polls, the BJP allege that the attack was prompted by a dispute over ticket allocation for the elections. 'During the panchayat elections ,Congress workers are facing systemic violence and intimidation under the Assam government's watch. We will not bow to the politics of fear. Assam will respond with votes, resilience, and an unbreakable faith in democracy,' AICC in charge of Assam Jitendra Singh Alwar said. Responding to these allegations, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the incident took place in a Muslim-majority area. 'If the BJP is there in Dhing Rupahi too, then the Congress should leave politics. Where we don't have booth committee, where we don't even get 2,000 votes, where will BJP come from there… They said that they will give zila parishad to one person, they didn't give, he has attacked, that's what the SP has told me but the investigation is ongoing and we will find out more,' said Sarma. Earlier this year, in February, Dhubri MP from the Congress Rakibul Hussain had also been assaulted by a group of masked men in Nagaon district while campaigning for the Samaguri bye-election there.

'I cannot understand what is happening to Congress. Juria, Dhing, Rupohi, Lahorighat if you see the demography and traditionally are not BJP vote base. BJP does not even have a booth committee in these areas. Congress has alleged that BJP workers have attacked us. Now if BJP's popularity has increased in these areas, it will be an amazing affair.' Sarma said that minority people in Assam are disillusioned by Congress. 'These people openly cannot support BJP, that is why these people are chasing Congress leaders in their meetings. If you see Rakibul Hussain even in Panchayat elections Hussain has not gone to his constituency Dhubri.' Live Events Sarma said, 'Security of Bordoloi is increased, police are taking action, video recording is being scanned by the police.' Recently Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain was attacked. Police said a former Congress worker carried out the attack. Imdadul Islam, a resident of Burhagaon in Morigaon district, was named as the main perpetrator, with authorities confirming that he was accompanied by others during the assault. "We have identified Imdadul Islam as the prime suspect. He was suspended from the Congress party on Saturday, and our investigation suggests that he orchestrated the attack,' said SP Swapnaneel Deka. "We were on the campaign trail, returning after a meeting in Zengoni, when a group of masked men armed with rods suddenly surrounded my car on an isolated stretch of road and launched a rampage. I am certain they knew it was my car," Bordoloi said. Bordoloi said, "Such cowardly attacks cannot deter our campaign or our resolve to challenge the BJP in the upcoming elections. We are not afraid. We will continue to fight against the syndicate raj, corruption, and the many wrongdoings." The congress party in Assam recently accused the state police of intimidating its candidates ahead of the upcoming Panchayat elections. Senior Congress leaders, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah and Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, marched on foot to the office of Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh in Ulubari to raise concerns regarding targeting the Congress candidates and their family members.

Congress MP and spokesperson injured in attack at Nagaon

Guwahati: With just four days left for the panchayat election stated to begin May 2, Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who was campaigning for his party in Nagaon district, was attacked by unknown miscreants, and his vehicle was damaged. A Congress spokesperson was also injured along with Bordoloi in the incident and several vehicles were damaged. In response, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked police to start a probe into the incident immediately. The incident took place in the Rajabari area near Dumdumia in the Dhing area when the MP was returning after campaigning with Sibamoni Bora, the MLA from the Batadrava constituency, and Congress spokesperson Mohsin Khan. The miscreants targeted their vehicles, using sticks and rods. During the incident, both Bordoloi and Khan suffered injuries. Speaking to TOI, a police officer said the injured were taken to Dhing Civil Hospital and were given preliminary treatment. The officer also said a case has yet to be filed. Meanwhile, Congress issued a press statement, where the party alleged that the attack was carried out by BJP-backed culprits and demanded an immediate judicial inquiry into the incident. It also called for strict punishment for the culprits involved. The party expressed its dismay over the apparent inaction of the state election commission, accusing the election commissioner of failing to ensure a peaceful election environment, despite appeals. Bhupen Kumar Borah, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, condemned the attack and urged Sarma to act swiftly to prevent further violence. The party also called on the chief minister to ensure the safety of all panchayat election candidates and take necessary steps for a free and fair election. After the incident, Sarma addressed the media and said he had already instructed the police to initiate an investigation and enhance the security of Bordoloi. In response to Congress allegations, Sarma said, "The incident occurred in an area under Congress's control and I am puzzled as to what happened to them in their own stronghold"
