Lili Reinhart's queer indie series, 'Hal & Harper,' is hitting MUBI this fall

Sapphics, are you paying attention? You are going to want to know this: A new independent streaming series starring Lili Reinhart and Cooper Raiff is headed our way! On Monday, Deadline broke the news that streaming service MUBI acquired the rights to Hal & Harper, an eight-episode show centered around the titular codependent siblings, played by Reinhart and Raiff. Raiff also created, wrote, and directed the show. The series premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, earning rave reviews from viewers who appreciated both the heart and the comedy at the core of the show. Notably, both Reinhart and Raiff also play the much younger versions of themselves in childhood flashbacks, adding a Pen15-like quality to those sequences. If that wasn't enough to have us looking forward to Hal & Harper, it's also got a stacked cast that includes some queer faves. Mark Ruffalo plays their father, Betty Gilpin plays his girlfriend, and Bottoms' Havana Rose Liu plays the girl Hal is interested in. Oh, and did we mention Harper has a girlfriend? The Sex Lives of College Girls star Alyah Chanelle Scott tackles that role, while Addison Timlin plays the coworker Harper is crushing on. MUBI has had a hand in distributing several well-received queer films in recent years, including Shiva Baby, Knife + Heart, and Benedetta. Hal & Harper is one of a few series they have coming up, with the acquisition being praised by those hoping independent TV is a viable way forward. "MUBI is the perfect home for our very specific family show. They're a singular platform that understands the art they're putting out," Raiff told Deadline. "I am in awe of what they've done recently, and am excited to be a part of the family." And if you're still on the fence about the whole thing, we'll just leave this here: — (@) Hal & Harper will premiere on MUBI sometime this fall.

Ex-Atlanta mayor Bottoms launches gubernatorial bid

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is jumping into the race to become Georgia's next governor. Why it matters: Bottoms, who is the second Democrat to formally enter the race, is casting herself as a leader who can help steer the state through the turbulent waters of a second Trump administration. Her announcement comes a month after Democratic state Sen. Jason Esteves announced his bid for the governorship, which will be vacant because Gov. Brian Kemp is term-limited. On the Republican side, Attorney General Chris Carr is running. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones is also expected to compete in the GOP primary. What they're saying: Bottoms told Axios in a phone interview Monday that the state is facing "uncertainty, a lot of anxiousness and even a lot of frustration based on the chaos that's coming out of Washington." "I think we're all looking to see what we can do during this time to make sure that our families and our communities are stable, and for me, it's stepping up to serve as governor of Georgia," she said. Her campaign on Tuesday released a video announcing her candidacy. Bottoms, who was mayor from 2018 to 2022, said her priorities will be expanding Medicaid, helping small businesses thrive amid the "economic uncertainty" in Washington, and removing the income tax for teachers. Yes, and: During her tenure, Bottoms said, Atlanta experienced no property tax rate increases, layoffs or furloughs, and the city approved "historic" pay raises for police and firefighters. Catch up quick: Before she became mayor, Bottoms was elected to the Atlanta City Council in 2009 and reelected in 2013. When she took office in 2018, Bottoms' administration had to contend with the aftershock of a city hall bribery and corruption scandal and a ransomware attack that cost Atlanta taxpayers around $17 million. Bottoms decided not to seek reelection in 2021 and was succeeded by incumbent Andre Dickens. In February 2022, she became a CNN political contributor; later that year, she joined the Biden White House as a senior adviser. Context: Bottoms' administration was also running the city when the COVID pandemic brought the world to a halt. She rose to national prominence when she publicly criticized activists after storefronts were damaged and a police vehicle was torched Downtown during protests over the murder of George Floyd. She also sparred with Kemp when the city's crime rate spiked during the pandemic. The governor also sued Bottoms and the Atlanta City Council in July 2020 when Bottoms ordered face masks to be required in public spaces, NPR reported. (Kemp later dropped the lawsuit.) Between the lines: Bottoms told Axios she was proud of her service as mayor, even though she opted to step down after four years. "It was the honor of a lifetime to serve as mayor of Atlanta, but for everything, there is a season," she said. "And … leaving at the end of the four-year term that I was elected to serve, it was time for me to enter a different season in my life, and it had nothing to do with not liking being mayor." In a 2022 interview with New York magazine, she said being mayor clashed with her personality: "an introvert masking as an extrovert." Even in Bottoms' first year as mayor, she said when announcing her decision not to seek a second term, "I wasn't sure that I would run again."

Leighton Meester is joining husband Adam Brody on Season 2 of ‘Nobody Wants This'

'Gossip Girl' star Leighton Meester has signed on to join the cast of 'Nobody Wants This' for its upcoming second season. Netflix announced the news on the streamer's official Instagram page on Thursday, writing, 'everybody wants this!' Meester, who is married to the hit rom-com's leading man Adam Brody, will be playing the former 'middle school nemesis' of Kristen Bell's character Joanne, according to Neftlix. Variety reported that Miles Fowler of 'Bottoms' fame is also tapped to guest star on Season 2, playing a character that's on Noah's (Brody) basketball team – known as the Matzah Ballers – who gets set up with Joanne's sister Morgan (Justine Lupe). 'Nobody Wants This' stars Brody, Bell, Jackie Tohn, Lupe and Timothy Simons. It follows Noah, a so-called 'hot rabbi,' who gets into a relationship with Joanne, a sex-forward podcaster of no particular religious affiliation. Noah's religious beliefs and traditional family presented some roadblocks for their relationship in the first season, but the pair's undeniable chemistry kept things going. Earlier this month, Brody won a Critics Choice award for his performance in the series, and gave Meester a heartfelt mention in his speech. 'My darling, darling, darling wife, Leighton, thank you,' Brody said. 'Thank you for sharing this life with me and this journey with me. Thank you for our family. Love you with all my heart.' 'Nobody Wants This' was an instant hit when it debuted last year. It has since nabbed three Golden Globe nods, including in the acting categories for Brody and Bell. Brody and Bell are also both nominated for SAG Awards, which Bell is also hosting and which will be held this Sunday in Los Angeles. A release date for Season 2 of 'Nobody Wants This' has not yet been announced.
