IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyers Unbeaten 87 Powers Punjab Kings To Final With Five-Wicket Win Over Mumbai Indians
Skipper Shreyas Iyer shined by slamming an unbeaten 87 off 4 balls as Punjab Kings entered the IPL 2025 final with a five-wicket win over Mumbai in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. PBKS will now meet Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the title clash on Tuesday, in what is a re-match of Qualifier 1 meeting. MI being knocked out of the competition also means that IPL will have a new champion come Tuesday. Iyer stood tall with a knock full of sheer class and immaculate composure, including pacing it to near perfection, and got his team over the line in a chase of 204 with an over to spare. Apart from hitting five fours and eight sixes, Iyer overcame early fluency struggles to single-handedly make PBKS win by literally leading from the front. He also shared a match-winning 84-run stand with Nehal Wadhera, who hit a blazing 29-ball 48. Iyer has now captained two different teams – PBKS and Kolkata Knight Riders to back-to-back IPL finals. He also captained Delhi Capitals to IPL 2020 finals, and Qualifier 2's result has made him the only skipper to achieve this fascinating feat. Chasing 204, Prabhsimran Singh welcomed Trent Boult with a flicked four, before the left-arm pacer had the last laugh by having the right-handed batter top-edge a pull to a running short fine leg. Josh Inglis ensured PBKS' didn't lose the plot early on by scooping and pulling Boult for two boundaries. Priyansh Arya stepped up the attacking mantle by flicking Reece Topley for four, before lofting him for six. The highlight of PBKS' power-play came in the fifth over when Inglis carted Jasprit Bumrah for 20 runs – a flicked four was followed by a heaved six, before another flicked boundary and a top-edged maximum came off his blade. But MI bounced back from that little onslaught as pacer Ashwani Kumar had Arya slicing to mid-off, with PBKS ending power-play at 64/2. Shortly after, Hardik Pandya struck when his off-cutter took a thin top-edge of Inglis' pull and was caught by the keeper, with PBKS' burning a review on their in-form batter. Though Iyer and Nehal Wadhera hit some boundaries, including three coming off Hardik Pandya in the tenth over and the latter being dropped on 13 by Boult, Ashwani and Bumrah bowling tight 11th and 12th overs meant the asking rate pushed to 12. Sensing the need to get back in the chase, Iyer hit a hat-trick of sixes off Topley – a heave over backward square leg was followed by two lofts going over long-on and down the ground respectively. It was followed by Wadhera getting two boundaries off Boult, including one coming off the leading edge. He then greeted Ashwani by slamming him down the ground for six, before the pacer struck by having the batter miscue to mid-off. Iyer marched on to bring up his fifty off 27 balls by squeezing Boult through backward point for four. Though Shashank Singh was run-out cheaply, Iyer continued to open the bat face at the last moment to get two boundaries off yorkers. He then lofted Ashwani high over long-on for six, and followed it up by clobbering him over long-off on a free-hit. Iyer again lofted Ashwani over long-on for six, before launching him for another maximum to fire PBKS into an IPL final after 11 long years. Previously, after two hours and 15 minutes of rain playing hide and seek, as well as of oscillating between drizzle and heavy downpour, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Naman Dhir dished out high tempo knocks to help MI post a challenging 203/6. Suryakumar and Varma hit knocks of 44 each while Dhir applied finishing touches with an 18-ball 37 to take MI past 200-mark, despite a PBKS fightback in between. Once the game began, PBKS had instant success as Rohit Sharma, dropped on four in the second over, pulled to deep square leg off Marcus Stoinis. After that, Varma and Jonny Bairstow brought out big shots from the word go. While Varma smacked Stoinis for a powerful six over long-on fence, Bairstow – despite being outwitted by slower balls at times - got two fours off Arshdeep, including off a top-edge, before taking a boundary and six off Azmatullah Omarzai, as MI ended power-play at 65/1. Bairstow's troubles against slower balls continued in front of Vyshak Vijaykumar, who troubled him with it and eventually had him caught behind off an attempted scoop through a knuckle ball in the eighth over. Varma, though, ran after Vyshak – dispatching him down the ground for four, before lofting elegantly over long-off for six. Suryakumar, who struggled to time his scoops well, found his range by taking two sixes and a four off a returning Yuzvendra Chahal's second and third overs – the maximums coming off a sweep and loft down the ground, while the boundary came off a cut through backward point for four. After reaching out to slash and pull off Jamieson for two fours and go past 700 runs in this season, Suryakumar lofted Chahal for a four and six each, before the leg-spinner had the last laugh as the batter top-edged a sweep to deep mid-wicket. One brought two for PBKS as Varma mistimed his loft to mid-on off Jamieson, as MI lost both of their set batters in just three balls. Dhir began adding some impetus into the back-end of MI's innings by taking three fours off Arshdeep, including one coming off the top-edge, in the 17th over. He and Hardik Pandya took a four each off Omarzai, before the latter top-edged a pull to the keeper on the last ball of the 18th over. With Arshdeep missing his lengths and PBKS forced to put only four fielders on the boundary ropes in the last two overs due to over-rate penalty, Dhir nailed his pull and loft to pick two fours, before heaving Omarzai for another boundary. Though Dhir later hit straight to extra cover off Omarzai, MI managed to cross the 200-run mark - something which was a great psychological advantage in a knockout game. But Iyer's blistering knock ensured PBKS put it aside and now have a shot at winning their first IPL title.

Rohit scores 81 as Mumbai eliminate Gujarat to keep IPL final hopes alive
Rohit Sharma's 81, coupled with the experience of bowlers Trent Boult (2-56) and Jasprit Bumrah (1-27) proved pivotal for Mumbai Indians claiming a spot in Qualifier 2, with a 20-run win over Gujarat Titans in Eliminator match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Friday. In their chase of 229, Gujarat Titans scored 208/6 in 20 overs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. With no Jos Buttler in the batting order, Shubman Gill (1) really needed to fire but fell to Boult's opening spell. With a massive chase ahead, the Kiwi pacer caught Gill plumb in front, which was confirmed after an unsuccessful review by GT, to start on the right foot. After a fiery opening two overs by Boult and Bumrah, Sudharsan and Kusal Mendis (20) began to shift gears and started an onslaught of their own. Sudarsan began proceedings by flicking Boult for six before Mendis, replacing Buttler, struck the left-arm pacer for consecutive maximums. The left-handed opener displayed an array of shots and carved the Mumbai pace attack through the gaps to all parts of the ground. Hardik Pandya decided to bowl for the first time in the power-play but was hit for three boundaries. Mendis found himself in no-man's land on the final ball of the power-play, after a mix-up while running, but Raj Bawa missed the stumps as GT reached 66/1, with the fielding restrictions being lifted. However, Mendis' horror night, despite a solid batting innings, which began with him dropping two catches, ended with him hitting his stumps. The Sri Lanka batter attempted to sweep Mitchell Santner, but his leg slipped and he knocked over his stumps. Sudharsan raised his sixth half-century of the season in 28 deliveries, and crossed the 700-run mark for the season, while Washington Sundar (48) settled into the crease. Despite the fall in wickets, Gujarat's run rate continued to match the high requirement. Sundar began to ramp up his innings with a four and a six off Pandya, both off low full-toss deliveries, before smashing consecutive sixes in an 18-run Trent Boult over. With Gujarat nearing the 150 mark in 13 overs, Hardik needed his most trusted bowler to end the partnership, which was approaching the 100-run mark, and Bumrah did it in typical fashion. The pacer bowled a scintillating yorker, which Sundar had no answer to. The ball castled into stumps, leaving the all-rounder on the floor. Sherfane Rutherford (24) began with a bang and struck three boundaries before Gleeson ended Sudharsan's night. The Englishman, who replaced Corbin Bosch, claimed the important wicket of Sudharsan, who was bowled over by a yorker while attempting a scoop shot. Ashwani Kumar and Bumrah restricted boundaries to a minimum, with nine runs each coming off the subsequent overs, with Rahul Tewatia (16) claiming a towering maximum over the latter. With the pressure rising and 36 needed off 12, Boult served it right in the slot, but Rutherford, connecting with the toe end of the bat, holed it straight to Tilak Varma at deep mid-wicket. With 30 needed off seven, it seemed the result was certain before Shahrukh Khan (13) struck a massive six off the Kiwi to revive the crowd. Gleeson was trusted with the final six deliveries, but he cramped up while running in and was only able to bowl three, in which he conceded as many runs. Ashwani Kumar finished the remaining spell, whilst also dismissing Shahrukh to seal the 20-run victory. After surprisingly opting to bat first, Rohit and Jonny Bairstow (47) set the platform as Mumbai Indians posted a massive total of 228/5 in 20 overs. Rohit's innings, which showcased his brute force and ability to cross the boundary at ease, was laced with nine boundaries and four sixes. However, it was not a perfect one as the former India skipper was dropped twice on the day, in what can only be described as a poor outing for the 2022 winners in the field. His first lifeline came when he was batting on three runs. Rohit pulled towards Gerald Coetzee in the deep, which the Proteas player fumbled through his hands. In the very next over, Rohit showed why Gujarat can't afford to give him a lifeline as he struck Mohammed Siraj for consecutive boundaries. Agencies Brief scores : Mumbai Indians 228/5 in 20 overs (Rohit Sharma 81, Jonny Bairstow 47, Suryakumar Yadav 33; Sai Kishore 2-42, Prasidh Krishna 2-53) beat Gujarat Titans 208/6 in 20 overs (Sai Sudharsan 80, Washington Sundar 48; Trent Boult 2-56, Jasprit Bumrah 1-27) by 20 runs

Sai Sudharsan charges at umpire; Washington Sundar argues with officials as Gujarat Titans' wide DRS turned down
What is an IPL playoff game without a hint of controversy? Even if there wasn't anything too majorly controversial in Gujarat Titans' loss to Mumbai Indians at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur on Friday, there was still a moment a player found himself disagreeing with the umpires, as Sai Sudharsan found himself flummoxed by a wide decision that went against him during GT's attempted mammoth chase of 229. With Trent Boult coming on to bowl in the 13th over, Sudharsan attempted to take the attack to him early in the over and put the Kiwi bowler under pressure. Sudharsan, then batting on 76* and well-set at the crease, went for a scoop over short fine-leg. However, the delivery was fired down the leg and looked to be wide. After standing umpire Rohan Pandit adjudged that the ball would have struck Sudharsan in his batting stance if he hadn't moved, the GT batter decided to take a review for what he thought was a straightforward wide decision. The decision was sent up to TV umpire Virender Sharma, who backed his on-field colleague's call by stating it would have hit Sudharsan had he not shifted across to play the scoop. It was a decision that the usually calm and relaxed Sudharsan wasn't happy with, as he walked down the wicket to share his disagreements with the on-field umpire. Nevertheless, Boult got away with a dot ball in that instance. It would be a good over for GT regardless, as Washington Sundar hit two massive sixes off the Kiwi pacer later in the over, before finishing with a four for an 18-run over. The scoop shot, which Sudharsan is typically a capable player of, got him in trouble again soon after. Sudharsan re-attempted the stroke against Richard Gleeson, having successfully hit a four using the shot against the same bowler earlier in the innings. However, Sudharsan missed it and found a mess made of his stumps behind him. Sudharsan's wicket saw him dismissed on 80(49), and with Sundar also having been dismissed the prior over, GT's strong chase till that point was stopped in its tracks. MI ended up winning the match comfortably at the end by 20 runs, with Boult delivering a much better 19th over that all but gave his team the win. After eliminating GT, MI will now be tasked with overcoming Punjab Kings as they attempt to reach the IPL 2025 final.

'Ek kaam karta hun, out ho jata hun': Shubman Gill's flop show sparks meme fest
Shubman Gill (Image credit: BCCI/IPL) NEW DELHI: After Mumbai Indians posted a daunting total in a crucial knockout clash, Gujarat Titans would have banked on a solid start from openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan to lay the foundation for the massive chase. However, their hopes were dashed early as skipper Shubman Gill was dismissed in the very first over by MI's strike bowler Trent Boult , delivering a significant early setback. Boult got the ball to swing in late and at pace. Pitching full on middle and leg, the delivery tempted Gill into a pre-determined hoick across the line. He missed it completely, and the ball crashed into his pads. The umpire raised his finger immediately. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Hardik Pandya roared in celebration, as did Boult and the rest of the MI camp. Gill reviewed the decision, but the replays didn't favor him, and he walked back disappointed. Following his dismissal, fans took to social media and started trolling the Gujarat Titans skipper. — wittybinod (@wittybinod) Earlier, Rohit Sharma capitalised on some early luck to craft a stroke-filled 81, while Jonny Bairstow made an immediate impact on his MI debut, propelling the five-time champions to a formidable 228/5 against a sloppy Gujarat Titans outfit in the IPL Eliminator. With a surface offering less grass than the one used for Qualifier 1, Mumbai chose to bat first — and their decision paid off. Gujarat Titans were listless in the field, dropping three crucial catches — two of Rohit (81 off 50) and one of Suryakumar Yadav (33 off 20) — and offered little control with the ball. 'I don't want to be a one-season wonder': Punjab Kings' Shashank Singh Rohit, the former captain, was dropped twice during the powerplay — first by Gerald Coetzee in the deep, and then by Kusal Mendis, who had a forgettable GT debut after fumbling a straightforward take behind the stumps off Mohammed Siraj. It was Bairstow (47 off 22) who set the tone, unleashing a flurry of boundaries to give Mumbai Indians the early momentum in the powerplay. The England batter, returning to the IPL after not featuring regularly in recent seasons, carried his county form into the game, having recently hit back-to-back fifties for Yorkshire. This marked the third straight match in which Gujarat Titans conceded a total in excess of 225 — a worrying trend for the 2022 champions.

IPL 2025: Will Bumrah factor and Boult's thunderboults take MI to Qualifier two?
Mullanpur (Punjab) [India], May 30 (ANI): As Mumbai Indians (MI) takes on Gujarat Titans (GT) in the eliminator match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), plenty of eyeballs will be on their pace duo of Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been the frontline warriors of this solid run five-time champions have enjoyed so far. MI will be aiming to take another step closer to their sixth title and first one in five years at Mullanpur against GT, with the winner getting to join Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Qualifier two for a shot at the final. In MI's fourth-place finish in the league stage so far, Boult and Bumrah have played a massive role, having taken 19 wickets in 14 games and 17 scalps in 10 games respectively. Both these superstars enjoy a solid IPL knockouts record to their names. In eight IPL knockout appearances, Bumrah has taken 11 wickets at a brilliant average of 17.54 and a fantastic economy rate of 6.29, showcasing his ability to put pressure on the batter at the most significant occasion. His best effort is a spell of 4/14 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2020 Qualifier one. However, in his previous knockout appearance, during the 2020 IPL final, he went wicketless against DC, conceding 28 runs in his four overs. As Bumrah missed the first four IPL games due to injury, his absence affected MI hard as new-ball specialist Deepak Chahar and an inexperienced Satyanarayana Raju were forced into death overs, generating an economy rate of 11.04 in this phase from overs 17-20. When Bumrah joined the team, he took some workload from skipper Hardik Pandya, made MI allocate Boult and Chahar's overs during powerplay, where they were at their best. Since his arrival, MI's death over economy rate is 9.48, the second-best among all teams. He has bowled like he was never injured, topping the charts for economy rate (6.33) and bowling average (14.64). On the other hand, Boult has taken 16 wickets in 11 knockout appearances at an average of 19.12, with a solid economy rate of 7.46. His best bowling figures are 3/30, which came for MI in the final of IPL 2020 in a winning cause. In his last playoff appearance for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) last year during Qualifier two, he took 3/45 in a losing effort. Boult has also delivered exceptional numbers in death overs during this IPL, with his 19 yorkers being the second-highest next to Avesh Khan of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who delivered 21 of them.. He also has taken four wickets at death, the most by a bowler, with a brilliant economy rate of 2.75. Will Bumrah-Boult create magic in the eliminator? Squads: Gujarat Titans Squad: Shubman Gill(c), Sai Sudharsan, Kusal Mendis(w), Sherfane Rutherford, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Arshad Khan, Gerald Coetzee, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Anuj Rawat, Mahipal Lomror, Ishant Sharma, Washington Sundar, Jayant Yadav, Dasun Shanaka, Karim Janat, Kulwant Khejroliya, Manav Suthar, Kumar Kushagra, Gurnoor Brar, Nishant Sindhu Mumbai Indians Squad: Rohit Sharma, Jonny Bairstow(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Charith Asalanka, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya(c), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Ashwani Kumar, Karn Sharma, Raj Bawa, Satyanarayana Raju, Bevon Jacobs, Robin Minz, Arjun Tendulkar, Raghu Sharma, Krishnan Shrijith, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Richard Gleeson, Reece Topley.
