Local community comes together ahead of International Transgender Day of Visibility
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Monday marks the International Transgender Day of Visibility. It's an annual event dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness for the discrimination they face.
Full Spectrum Community Outreach in Youngstown is raising awareness, too. The nonprofit is dedicated to supporting local members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The nonprofit hosted its ninth annual Bowling for Visibility event Sunday night at Westside Bowl to allow members of the community to come together and seek support.
'We need to stand up and be here and be a supportive system for them. That's why the Full Spectrum is here as an LGBT center. We're always going to be here for anyone that is transgender that needs support, and this event is for them,' said Tim Bortner, president of Full Spectrum.
The first International Transgender Day of Visibility was held on March 31, 2009.
