THE CANADIAN PRESS/Doug Ives A man and his 14-year-old son have been charged after allegedly placing antisemitic pamphlets at a Canadian Tire in Bowmanville in January and vandalizing a mosque in Orono last month. Durham Regional Police said the first incident occurred on the afternoon of Jan. 30 at a Canadian Tire store on Green Road. An unknown man entered the store and was caught on camera putting antisemitic pamphlets throughout the building, police said. Employees discovered the pamphlets and reported them to the police. Meanwhile, on the evening of May 24, police were called to a mosque at 111 Church Street North after several vehicles and the front door were vandalized. As a result of their investigation, police executed two search warrants at a home in Orono on Monday and arrested two people without incident. Police said they also seized several items. One suspect, a 34-year-old man, has been charged with mischief to property while his teenage son is facing a charge of mischief relating to religious property. Police said the two were released on an undertaking. 'We recognize the significant impact these incidents have had on our community, particularly among members of the Jewish and Muslim communities,' Durham police said in a news release on Tuesday. 'Acts that target or instill fear in any group are unacceptable and are taken very seriously. We remain committed to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of everyone in our community.' (DRPS) Police have arrested a former nurse in connection with robberies at multiple long-term care homes in Oshawa and Bowmanville. The female suspect would allegedly enter resident rooms in the retirement homes and steal their belongings, police say. Police say the investigation began on June 3 and the suspect was identified and arrested at her residence three days later. Kayla Summers, 35, of Clarington is facing various charges including break-and-enter, theft not exceeding $5,000 and fraud under $5,000. The charges have not been tested in court. Police believe there may be additional victims. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

What we know According to Chicago police, two people broke into a business in the 5400 block of North Damen Avenue between 2:45 a.m. and 3:20 a.m. and took off with merchandise. Surveillance footage showed the offenders, both dressed in black with light skin and dark hair, arriving in a small red crossover SUV with a distinctive black front driver's side quarter panel. The pair fled the scene driving south on Damen Avenue toward Foster Avenue. No arrests have been made. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Doug Ives A suspected impaired driver was arrested after they crashed their vehicle into a Whitby home on Saturday night and then attempted to flee the scene on foot, police say. The incident happened in the area of Carnwith Drive East and Watford Street at around 11:50 p.m. Police say that a white Chevrolet pick-up was travelling northbound on Watford Street at a high rate of speed when its driver sped through a stop sign and crashed into the home, causing significant damage to the structure. 'The driver of the pick-up truck fled the scene on foot. Officers searched the area with the assistance of Air1 and located the male not far from the scene of the incident,' police said in a news release issued on Monday. Lucas Desbois, 25, is facing four charges in connection with the incident, including impaired operation of a conveyance and dangerous operation of a conveyance. He has since been released from custody on an undertaking and is due in court at a later date. Police say that the investigation into the collision remains ongoing.

Durham Regional Police say they responded to the area of John Street West and Simcoe Street South. When they arrived, officers located one male victim, who was subsequently taken to a Toronto-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the other victim suffering from a gunshot wound made his way to the hospital. His injuries are also considered not life-threatening. Meanwhile, officers have taken a male suspect in custody, and they say there is no threat to public safety. The circumstances that led to the shooting are not immediately known.
