John Gosden puts Guineas pain behind him with dramatic Lockinge Stakes win for Lead Artist - as trainer hails Oisin Murphy's 'perfect ride'

John Gosden was stopped mid-flow from finishing his answer, as he was beckoned to receive his trophy, but he had already said enough. His stable had just won the Boylesports Lockinge Stakes for the fifth time, his handsome colt Lead Artist cutting down favourite Dancing Gemini in the shadows of the post. We expected this one-mile contest to be a humdinger, given the high-class field assembled, and it did not disappoint. Lead Artist was wearing the same pink-and-green silks that Gosden's Field Of Gold had sported two weeks earlier in the Betfred 2000 Guineas but that horse missed his target in agonising fashion. On this occasion, there was no sense cause for regret. Oisin Murphy urged Lead Artist ahead when it mattered and his trainer was elated. 'Oisin gave him a peach of a ride,' said Gosden, a comment that immediately made you think of Kieran Shoemark, the jockey who had partnered Lead Artist on his eight previous career starts but found himself surplus to requirements – instead he rode outsider Fallen Angel. Shoemark had been Field Of Gold's partner that fateful Newmarket day and, 72 hours later, found himself effectively jettisoned from the position he had held for the past 15 months. Gosden wants to use the 'best available' on the biggest days and Murphy, he insisted, had made the difference. 'It was a perfect ride; we discussed it before – it was super,' said Gosden, who trains in conjunction with his son, Thady, but he couldn't elaborate as the sponsors and photographers were waiting and the trophy needed to be lifted. In fairness, it was. Murphy became available after he thought his original mount, Tamfana, was going to run in France on Sunday but when trainer David Menuisier switched to Newbury instead, the reigning champion did not want to let Gosden down. You could see that in how he rode. In what was arguably the best running of this Group One contest since the mighty Frankel routed his rivals in 2012, Murphy kept enough in reserve for when it mattered to hold off Dancing Gemini, while Classic winners Rosallion and Notable Speech closed in. 'I was really taken aback by what he did,' said Murphy. 'The horse has a great demeanour and he showed a lot of guts. I hope everyone enjoyed that tussle. I was delighted to come out on top. Ryan (Moore, Dancing Gemini's jockey) beat me in this in a phot a few years ago. 'The stable were very confident and they allowed me a free rein. It all worked out and I'm delighted.'

Bargain buy Tamfana giving ‘people from all walks of life' a taste of big time

The filly originally cost her connections just £16,000 and has earned more than £500,000 before she lines up as one of the leading contenders in the £400,000 Lockinge Stakes Bargain buy filly Tamfana is giving 'people from all walks of life' a taste of racing's big time as she returns to Group 1 company to contest the £500,000 Boylesports Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on Saturday. Since being purchased for just £16,000 by ace bloodstock agent Jeremy Brummitt she has taken members of the Quantum Leap Racing syndicate to Newmarket for the 1,000 Guineas, Chantilly for the French Oaks and British Champions Day at Ascot for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. ‌ She was placed in each as well as managing to post two wins, including her first at Group 1 level in the Sun Chariot Stakes. ‌ Her four-year-old campaign under trainer David Meniusier began with a second at Sandown behind Dancing Gemini who she meets again on much better terms in the first older horse Group 1 race of the year. 'It's great to see a syndicate having a runner in a race like this,' said Quantum Leap founder and chairman Eamonn O'Connor. 'We have publicans, barristers, construction workers, teachers, IT professionals in our group, all walks of life. 'We have about 12 shares in the horse and therefore we end up with about 24 people and their partners at the racecourse. 'Tamfana came from a sale in Germany that we frequent every year. We tend to focus on buying staying stock and horses that come into their own at three years old and beyond and probably over middle distances. 'We only buy horses we think are going to be decent. The price tag is almost irrelevant. Jeremy Brummitt buys our horses. I don't give him a set figure, he only buys horses that he likes. ‌ 'We knew pretty early that Tamfana might be okay. We are quite an ambitious syndicate. We buy horses to compete up to Group 1 level or if not heritage handicaps. We are not interested in low grade races.' Past stars for the syndicate include Ottilien, who was sold for £500,000 after winning three times, and Rodrigo Diaz who took his owners to Dubai and Australia, where injury ended his Melbourne Cup challenge. ‌ O'Connor said: 'We produce a good horse every year, rated between 90 and 105. Our model is generally to sell probably to an overseas jurisdiction, replenish the pot and go again. 'If you'd wanted to buy a quarter share of Tamfana it would have cost £4,000 plus a £7,000 syndicate fee which is divided among the members. 'We grow quietly by referral and introductions. We have had great days out with Tamfana and hopefully Saturday will be another. I'd be disappointed if we're not in the first four. We are going there with a degree of confidence.'

On a day of top class I action I'm tipping this 7-1 chance to run a huge race at Newmarket

IF it was a heavyweight boxing decider the world would be going mad – and in racing terms Notable Speech vs Rosallion is just that as they smash up once again at Newbury. The two Guineas heroes slug it out in the Group 1 Boylesports Lockinge Stakes at 2.35 — a one-mile contest won by some of the greats like Brigadier Gerard, Selkirk, Canford Cliffs, Frankel and Baaeed. 1 It's no two-horse race but Chappers is backing Notable Speech to get the better of Rosallion in a pulsating Lockinge Credit: PA A race-fit Notable Speech defeated Rosallion in last year's 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, running on powerfully to deny the Richard Hannon-trained runner by a length and a half. Rosallion, though, would go on to the Curragh and take the Irish 2,000 before gaining his revenge on his old rival in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. That day Notable Speech flopped in seventh, while Rosallion, under regular partner Sean Levey, proved he was a tough nut in denying Henry Longfellow. Afterwards, Notable Speech returned to his best in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and when a slightly unlucky third in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar in the autumn. But he proved he wasn't bombproof once again when only fifth to Tribalist in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp. Maybe he hated the soft ground that day. So now we have round three of Notable Speech vs Rosallion. I'm in the former camp as I think he might have better turn of foot. Most read in Horse Racing But it's hard to be dogmatic with both colts making their seasonal debut. Charlie Appleby, the trainer of Notable Speech, had the 2023 Lockinge winner Modern Games go in after he ran at the Breeders' Cup the previous year. However, that horse had an outing in Keeneland the month before the Newbury test. Make no mistake this is no two-horse race. Dancing Gemini might easily be good enough for Roger Teal after two fabulous successes this term at Doncaster and Sandown. He has back class at this level in the French Derby where he was a decent runner-up as a three-year-old. Ryan Moore rides Dancing Gemini for the first time. Kieran Shoemark, who rode him at Doncaster, is now on Karl Burke's Fallen Angel, an Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine, while Rossa Ryan, who was aboard Dancing Gemini at Sandown last time, picks up David Menuisier's Tamfana, who was second at the Esher track. In a right old jockey merry-go-round, Oisin Murphy, who usually gets the Tamfana gig, switches to Lead Artist, a horse who has gone so well for Shoemark in the past! One can only presume Murphy is on Lead Artist to keep mega owner Juddmonte happy although, to be fair, the John Gosden runner is rated 117 to Tamfana's 116. What a race. Just sit back and enjoy it. That also goes for Newbury's opening Group 3 Sky Sports Racing Aston Park Stakes over a mile and a half at 12.50pm. Some old favourites here, including the return of the former Ascot Gold Cup victor Courage Mon Ami. He's been off the track since August of 2023 so will surely need the run and further in time. The in-form Al Aasy tries to repeat his success in 2021 and is raring to go for William Haggas, while King's Gambit runs for Harry Charlton having been gelded. He's only tried this trip once before so stamina is a question. The one that is worth a second look here is Sunway, who gets Shoemark on top for the first time. There is no doubt the Menuisier runner is a bit of a character, and he holds his head high in the finish. You actually have to go back to his juvenile days for the last time Sunway actually won a race, but he's run well in defeat — including when second to Los Angeles in the Irish Derby and fourth to the mighy Goliath in the King George at Ascot. I like him each-way but, with no natural front-runner in the line-up, only time will tell whether he's held on to or connections employ a change of tactics. Elsewhere I'm hoping for a huge run from Original Outlaw (1.40) in the JCB Handicap at Newmarket. He's another to have been gelded, and he promised quite a bit as a youngster, with a fine second at Salisbury to the Group-placed Royal Playwright. That level of ability should mean he takes all the beating in a race like this rated 85 and the trip is ideal. Ralph Beckett trains and Richard Kingscote takes the ride once again. I suspect the latter could go well in all the ITV races at HQ. Good luck to all and Yeeehaaa! Moore comes in for plum Lockinge ride on Dancing Gemini

Roger Teal has made the 'very difficult decision' to give Ryan Moore the ride aboard Dancing Gemini in the Boylesports Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on Saturday. The Camelot colt has made a flying start to his campaign, with a runaway comeback victory in the Doncaster Mile under Kieran Shoemark followed by another impressive success in the bet365 Mile at Sandown in the hands of Rossa Ryan. Both riders were seemingly available for this weekend's Group One feature, but after lengthy talks with owner David Fish, Teal confirmed Moore will take over in the saddle for the first time. Speaking at Chepstow on Tuesday, the trainer told Sky Sports Racing: 'It's been a very difficult decision, we've pondered all week. The discussions me and David have had have lasted an hour a day for the last four or five days. 'It's been very hard, but we came to that decision – when you get offered Ryan Moore, it's very, very hard to say no. 'No disrespect to Kieran or Rossa, there'll be other days for those guys and it hasn't been easy – it's probably been more stressful than training the horse. 'He (Moore) has ridden for us several times and we've got a good strike-rate together. I go back a long way with Ryan, from when he was in Brighton with his dad. We're just doing what we think's best.' The Lambourn-based trainer is unconcerned about the prospect of running on a quick surface at Newbury, adding: 'I don't think he's ground dependent. He had to handle softer ground because that's all he had last year with that wet summer, so he got labelled a soft ground horse. 'It will be interesting, but it was decent ground at Doncaster and OK it was patchy ground at Sandown last time, but the straight was good ground and he handled that. 'He's got a very low action, so I'd be surprised if he didn't go on it.' Teal is bidding to secure his third Group One success after former star sprinter Oxted landed the 2020 July Cup at Newmarket and the 2021 King's Stand at Royal Ascot. He said: 'We're just doing what we can do and it is difficult when you're up against the powerhouses. 'I don't know if someone up there is looking after me and tossing me a gold coin every now and then. We just do the best with what we can, we've dined on the big table a few times and it's a nice place to be – there's better steaks on that table!'

Rosallion poised for Lockinge return at Newbury

Rosallion is set to make his long-awaited return to action in Saturday's Boylesports Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. Richard Hannon's colt finished second in the 2000 Guineas last year before winning the Irish equivalent and the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He was then a late withdrawal from the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, before a problem kept him off the track for the rest of the season and he will be having his first run for 333 days. Rosallion is conceding a fitness advantage to Roger Teal's Dancing Gemini, already an impressive winner at Doncaster and Sandown this season having reverted to a mile after running in the Derby and Eclipse last year. Another making his reappearance is Charlie Appleby's Notable Speech, who got the better of Rosallion in the Guineas and took advantage of his absence at Goodwood. Tamfana finished behind Dancing Gemini at Sandown but could try her luck again for David Menuisier, while Karl Burke's Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Fallen Angel is also in contention in what looks a field stacked with class. Dylan Cunha's Prague, Checkandchallenge, Lead Artist, Persica and Storm Star complete the list of 10 possibles.
