Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shared the news in a post on X, saying that India's defence sector is witnessing unprecedented growth, propelled by the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. India's defence sector is growing stronger than ever, driven by the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Defence exports have jumped from ₹686 crore in 2013-14 to ₹23,622 crore in 2024-25 — a 34-fold rise,' Singh wrote on X. This significant rise reflects India's growing capabilities in indigenous defence manufacturing and its expanding footprint in the global defence market. The government's push for self-reliance through policy reforms, private sector participation, and strategic partnerships has been central to this transformation. As part of its 'Atmanirbhar' and 'Make in India' plans, the government launched various schemes, including the production-linked incentive (PLI), in various sectors to make Indian manufacturers globally competitive, attract investments, enhance exports, integrate India into the global supply chain, and reduce dependency on imports. India's defence manufacturing sector has reached historic highs, driven by the government's sustained emphasis on the 'Make in India' initiative. This surge in domestic production has not only boosted national security but also delivered strong returns to investors in major public sector defence companies in recent years. The government continues to invest heavily in defence and aerospace, with multiple manufacturing hubs being established across the country. The latest milestone is the inauguration of a state-of-the-art BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing facility in Lucknow on Sunday, underscoring India's growing technological capabilities. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In a sign of increasing global collaboration, several international defence firms have shared —or expressed interest in sharing — critical defence and aerospace technologies with India. According to the Ministry of Defence data, India exported a diverse range of items, including ammunition, weapons, subsystems, and components, to nearly 80 countries in the recently concluded financial year. Looking ahead, the government has set an ambitious target of achieving annual defence exports worth Rs 50,000 crore by 2029, aiming to cement India's position as a major player in the global defence market. Indian defence sector stocks, which had recently corrected from their highs, have again been soaring over the past weeks, much of it due to the recent flare-up of tensions with Pakistan. The successful display of India's indigenously developed systems against the adversary last week also lent support to the defence stocks latest conflict with Pakistan also alluded to the fact that it is critical to achieve self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The Nifty India Defence index has climbed over 30 per cent over the past three months, reflecting investor confidence in the strategic importance and commercial growth of India's domestic defence sector. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The rise in indigenous defence manufacturing has also led to substantial returns for investors in major defence manufacturing PSUs over the past few years. Operation Sindoor not ‘just a military action but symbol of India's political, social and strategic willpower': Rajnath Singh
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Sunday India's intention behind launching Operation Sindoor was not only to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan but also to send the message to the world that in its action against terrorism, India would ensure that such bases are not safe on either side of the border. While virtually launching the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing unit in Lucknow, which would produce supersonic cruise missiles, Singh said Indian armed forces not only displayed courage and bravery, but also restraint in their action against Pakistan. 'We took action not only on the bases adjoining the border, but the throbbing sound of the action by the Indian Army was even heard in Rawalpindi, where the Pakistani army has its headquarters,' he added. Claiming that the Indian Army got justice for families whose members were killed by anti-India terrorist organisations, Singh said Operation Sindoor was not 'just a military action but a symbol of India's political, social and strategic willpower'. He said this operation shows the commitment and capability of the country's military strength against terrorism and its readiness to take action following its zero-tolerance policy against terrorists. 'Humne dikhaya hai ki Bharat atankwad ke khilaf jab bhi koi karyawahi karega to atankwadiyon aur unke aakaon ke liye sarhad paar ki bhi koi zameen surakshit nahi rahegi (We proved that whoever India takes action against terrorism, it would ensure that terrorists and their bosses would not remain safe on this side of the border or across the border),' he added. He said the Indian Army showed restraint in its actions and never targeted citizens in Pakistan. 'Bhartiya senaon ne Operation Sindoor ko Pakistan mein maujood atanki dhancha dahane ke udyesh se launch kiya tha. Humne unke aam nagrikon ko kabhi nishana nahi banaya. Magar Pakistan ne na kewal Bharat ke nagrik ilakon ko, balki mandir, masjid, girjaghar par hamla karne ka prayas kiya (The Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor with the motive to demolish terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. We never targeted their common citizens. However, Pakistan attempted to not only target India's residential areas but also temples, mosques and churches),' said Singh. The defence minister said that right from the surgical strike after the 2016 Uri attack, the airstrike after the Pulwama attack in 2019, and now the multiple strikes against Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, have shown the entire world the result of conducting terror attacks in India. 'The Prime Minister has thus made it clear that following its zero tolerance policy against terrorism, new India would take strong action against terrorism, be it on this side of the border or the other side,' said Singh. Claiming that BrahMos is not just a weapon but a message of strength of the country's armed forces, the defence minister cited APJ Abdul Kalam and said the former president had said that 'unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us in this world. 'He said that fear has no place, only strength respects strength, and today, India is among the most powerful nations, and this unit would further assist in that strength'. The Union minister also gave a call for the country to capitalise on the defence sector by not just becoming self-reliant in defence equipment and weaponry, but also exporting them to other countries. Launched on May 7, Indian armed forces under Operation Sindoor destroyed nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir in retaliation for last month's Pahalgam terror attack.
