POLICE NEWS: Driver falls asleep, crashes vehicle near Wakarusa

A woman fell asleep behind the wheel of her vehicle Friday morning near Wakarusa, resulting in her hospitalization. Elkhart County deputies reported that at 5:16 a.m. Friday, Brandi Perkins, 21, of Mishawaka, was traveling east on C.R. 40 west of C.R. 1 in a 2009 Dodge Caliber when she fell asleep behind the wheel and drove off the roadway, striking a guardrail. Perkins was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for a knee injury. ARRESTS • A 60-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Goshen police at 9:18 a.m. Thursday on a charge of criminal trespassing after police were called to Martin's, 1401 College Ave., for a report of a man trespassing there. • A 25-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were both arrested by Goshen police at 12:23 p.m. Thursday — the man due to a warrant and both in possession of illegal narcotics — after police happened on them in the 1000 block of South 12th Street. • A 27-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Goshen police at 6:57 p.m. Thursday on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of paraphernalia after police initiated a traffic stop for a welfare check near East Purl Street and South Sixth Street. • Goshen police were called to Goshen High School, 401 Lincolnway East, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday for a 17-year-old boy found in possession of marijuana. The teen was arrested and transported to the Elkhart County Juvenile Detention Center where he was released to a guardian after being processed by probation. HIT-AND-RUN A 31-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between noon and 8 p.m. Thursday someone failed to remain at the scene of a motor vehicle accident causing damages to her vehicle in Elkhart County while delivering groceries. SEX CRIME • Elkhart County deputies received a report at 10:30 a.m. May 1 of a child molestation. • Elkhart County deputies received a report at 7:42 p.m. April 29 of a child molestation. SOUNDS OF GUNFIRE Goshen police were called to the 200 block of North Second Street at 5:42 a.m. Friday for a report of gunfire in the area. No evidence was found. UNLAWFUL ENTRY A 47-year-old woman reported to Goshen police at 1:25 p.m. Thursday that she caught someone entering her vehicle without her consent at Maplecrest Country Club, 611 Hackett Road. RUNAWAY Goshen police at 12:26 a.m. Thursday entered a report for a 16-year-old boy who had allegedly run way from a residence on Alpine Fire Lane in Elkhart. CRIMINAL MISCHIEF A 60-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 3:45 a.m. Friday that someone vandalized his vehicle in the 100 block of North Winter Avenue overnight. HOMELESS ASSIST Goshen police offered shelter and social services to a homeless person in the 100 block of South Main Street at 7:57 a.m. Thursday. The individual refused services after being found in violation of the city's camping ordinance. FRAUD A 78-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between April 14-18 fraud was committed.
