How Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, other Detroit Red Wings fared on Day 6 of World Championship

A Detroit Red Wings prospect helped push the U.S. to overtime to claim some much-needed points at the World Championship, and a Red Wings regular helped his country dominate. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, fresh off recording an assist in his 2025 debut at the elite international tournament, added a pair of helpers May 14 in his native Norway's match against the Americans. Kings GM job In Group B action, the U.S. needed overtime to prevail, 6-5, at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, Denmark. That put the U.S. in third place at the event that runs through May 25 in Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden. The Wings selected Brandsegg-Nygård (6 feet 1, 207 pounds) at No. 15 in last summer's draft. He played in 2024-25 for Skellefteå in the Swedish Hockey League, joining the Grand Rapids Griffins in mid-April after his Swedish club was eliminated from their playoffs. He was also on the ice late in the third period to set up a second goal in the final couple minutes of the third period, which forced the game into an extra period. That kind of poise under tremendous pressure is a terrific sign for the Wings, who see Brandsegg-Nygård as a key part of the rebuild. Red Wings First Rounder Brandsegg-Nygård to Join Norway at Worlds

2024 Detroit Red Wings first round pick Michael Brandsegg-Nygård has covered a LOT of miles this season. He took part in SHL preseason with Skellefteå AIK, then he joined the Red Wings for their training camp and preseason, before returning to Europe to play out the regular season in Skellefteå. After that campaign wrapped up, Brandsegg-Nygård jetted back across the Atlantic to join the Grand Rapids Griffins, participating in their short-lived Calder Cup Playoff run. Now, his trans-Atlantic journey will have one more stop: joining Team Norway for the IIHF World Championship. In so doing, Brandsegg-Nygård becomes the sixth Red Wing (or at least member of the organization) to suit up at this year's edition of Worlds, joining Marco Kasper (Austria), Moritz Seider (Germany), and Swedes Erik Gustafsson, Simon Edvinsson, and Lucas Raymond. The Norwegians have already played twice since the tournament's round robin began (losing both), and Brandsegg-Nygård is expected to debut in Tuesday's game against Seider and Germany. He should arrive in strong form. While the postseason was a disaster for the Griffins, who were swept out of the first round, blowing a three-goal third period lead then losing in double overtime to end the season, Brandsegg-Nygård put forth a strong individual showing, with two goals and three points in three playoff games.
