Rennes sign Lilian Brassier on loan
Brest centre-back Lilian Brassier (25) has joined Rennes on loan, both clubs have announced. Brassier's loan move includes a €12m option to make his move permanent for the next four years. The French centre-back spent the first half of the Ligue 1 campaign on loan at Marseille. However, Brassier's performances under the tutelage of Roberto De Zerbi were a far cry from the level he displayed last season with Eric Roy's Pirates and which earned him a move to the Vélodrome. Brassier's loan move to Marseille included a €12m purchase option, which Les Phocéens have decided not to trigger, prompting Rennes to pounce. (@staderennais) January 31, 2025 Rennes – Brassier's formative club – were looking to freshen up their ailing defense with an experienced Ligue 1 centre-back given how poorly Leo Ostigard and Hans Hateboer have performed since they joined Les Rouge et Noir last summer. Brassier has undertaken his medical this Friday and could make his debut with Rennes this Sunday against RC Strasbourg. He is the fourth player to join Rennes this winter transfer window after Seko Fofana, Brice Samba and Kyogo Furuhashi. GFFN | Bastien Cheval

Marseille centre-back Lilian Brassier to join Rennes on loan
Marseille centre-back Lilian Brassier (25) will leave Les Phocéens to join formative club Rennes on loan, according to L'Equipe and . Brassier only joined Marseille in the summer on a loan move from Brest with an obligation to buy set at €12m. Given the Frenchman's rather poor performances under the tutelage of Roberto De Zerbi, Marseille have agreed not to trigger the option to make Brassier's move to Vélodrome permanent. Rennes winger Amine Gouiri (24) is set to go the other way and sign for Marseille. All the involved parties have agreed the situation could not carry on. Brassier opened the door to an early Marseille exit and Les Phocéens have terminated his loan. Brest will then loan the centre-back to their bitter Brittany rivals Rennes under the same conditions. Les Rouge et Noir were looking for defensive signings as Leo Ostigard and Hans Hateboer are far from convincing and have often been found wanting. Get French Football News understands that Jorge Sampaoli's departure has facilitated Brassier's arrival at Rennes. Foot Mercato adds that Brassier is set to undergo a medical this Friday evening at Rennes. It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman's arrival will stop Rennes' pursuit of Lens centre-back Kevin Danso. GFFN | Bastien Cheval

Rennes in pole position to sign Marseille's Lilian Brassier
According to a report from RMC Sport journalist , Stade Rennais are in pole position to sign Olympique de Marseille defender Lilian Brassier (25). In the latest update in a complicated deal, Marseille are currently in advanced negotiations with Stade Brestois to find a solution in order to move on the defender. The Frenchman only joined in the summer on a loan move with an obligation to buy set at € would have to terminate the loan deal with Brest and thus trigger an early obligation to buy clause early. It requires talks with Stade Brestois as well as the club interested in buying Brassier. Stade Rennais, Racing Club de Lens, and both VFB Stuttgart and Wolfsburg have previously been reported as interested in the despite limited game time under Roberto De Zerbi, has been featuring regularly for Les Olympiens since the turn of the year. Whilst he was initially promising against Lille in the Coupe de France, his performances dipped against Strasbourg and notably during OM's defeat to OGC Nice last weekend in the Mediterranean derby (2-0). The defender was twice at fault for Les Aiglons' opening goal. A way back for Brassier looks increasingly unlikely, especially after head coach Roberto De Zerbi's comments following the match. 'I ask a lot of the center-backs and they have to do a lot, because they play for OM and if they can't do it, they're no good for OM,' said the Italian coach in his post-match press conference. 'With me, central defenders have to play the game, and if they don't want to, they can go to the stands.' |
