The team, coached by English teacher Jessica Kranz, Joyce Pasel, Ashley Hayes and Chris Miller, welcomes any local organizations wishing to have a speaker perform at events or meetings to reach out to a coach. Pioneer girls learn engineering The Girls Leadership Club at Pioneer Elementary School participated in a belated Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day on Monday at BraunAbility. The students learned about the history of BraunAbility, saw the assembly area, meet some of the engineering team and toured the lab to see different engineering areas. They also participated in two STEM challenges: building a spaghetti tower and a catapult challenge. 'The girls were exposed to a lot of information and opportunities on this trip,' said Alesia Brown, a third grade teacher at Pioneer and who created the club. 'There are careers in STEM right in our back yard and hopefully today helped show the girls some new ideas for their futures. The BraunAbility team was so great to work with and did a great job engaging the girls and giving them some hands on learning as well. It was a great day.' Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day was on Feb. 20. BraunAbility is located in Winamac and produces wheelchair accessible vans and wheelchair lifts. Celebrating Cass County Teachers Kim Schroder is the Pioneer Elementary School counselor and has been a part of the Pioneer community for 20 years. She has taught physical education, first grade, second grade, third grade and sixth grade. Previous to Pioneer, Schroder taught at Columbia Elementary in Rochester for a total of 30 years in teaching. One of the things she loves about being at Pioneer is bringing her therapy dog, Parka, to school each day. She also said that she loved the small, tight knit and friendly community at the school. When working with the students, her goals are to teach them to be kind to one another and to respect themselves and others. Her favorite memory is when one of her students asked her why it was still snowing after Christmas break because Christmas is over.
