New Attack Steals Your Windows Email, Passwords, 2FA Codes And More

The latest Katz malware version can steal most everything. Infostealers are the new black. When it comes to hacking fashion, malware that steals user credentials has been in vogue for a while now. We've seen the evidence in the 19 billion compromised passwords that are already available online, or the 94 billion browser cookies published to the Dark Web and Telegram channels. Microsoft has been spearheading the fight against the credential-stealing criminals, leading the recent global takedown of large parts of the Lumma Stealer network infrastructure, for example. Yet, the danger still persists; in fact, it is evolving. New research has revealed that a notorious threat to Windows users has emerged in the form of a new variant that can steal most anything and everything. Here's what you need to know about Katz. There is nothing particularly unusual about the way that the Katz Stealer malware is distributed. Victims are targeted through the usual cybercriminal methods, including phishing emails, malicious advertisements, dangerous search results, and dodgy downloads. Once installed, however, Katz looks to see if you are using Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or the Brave web browser and goes into what is known as headless mode. This is pretty much as it sounds, a browser with no visible interface, running 'headless' in the background but with the body able to render pages and interact with the web as normal. Katz can also bypass Google's app-bound encryption protections for Chrome, according to security researchers, which would aid in the credential-stealing payload. And it's the payload that has us shaking our collective heads in disbelief. A May 23 analysis of the latest Katz Stealer malware, by the Nextron threat research team, has revealed the true extent of this steal-everything threat to Windows users. According to the full analysis, which I would recommend you go and read, after you finish here, of course, the range of Katz when it comes to data that can be stolen is, well, extensive. As well as the usual mitigation advice for consumers to deploy two-factor authentication and passkeys on all accounts where available, apply all operating system and browser security updates as soon as possible and be alert to all the usual phishing tricks, the Nextron threat research team recommended the following for enterprise users: Nextron also suggested watching out for the scanning of Windows registry keys and files associated with popular browsers and wallet applications, as this is indicative of Katz Stealer activity. As Sergeant Phil Esterhaus used to say, if you know you know, 'be careful out there.'

Brave Liverpool heroes desperately tried to stop driver before car ploughed fans

Half a million fans had packed the streets to give a heroes' reception to their Liverpool idols after watching their team lift the Premier League trophy, when a car smashed into pedestrians Liverpool: Scene outside Anfield morning after parade horror Brave football fans made a selfless bid to stop a car from driving through the crowds of Liverpool supporters, which left 47 injured. About 500,000 fans packed the streets to give a raucous reception to their heroes, after watching their team lift the Premier League trophy for a record-tying 20th top-flight title. But, it soon turned into tragedy after a car ploughed into pedestrians. Police confirmed a 53-year-old white British man was arrested at the scene. ‌ Ambulances took 27 people to the hospital, including two with serious injuries, and another 20 people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, following the horror incident at about 6pm yesterday, just as fans were heading home after the victory parade. ‌ It should have been a day of celebration, but quickly soured into a devastating scene when a dark grey Ford Galaxy drove through a crowd of supporters. Chris Jones, from Liverpool, was with friends at the parade when he witnessed a car heading towards Water Street, and saw hero fans trying to stop the driver. He told MailOnline: "He was trying to force his way through and fans were banging on his window, shouting at him for going the wrong way. It was all supposed to be cordoned off, so he'd gone through barriers. "He started reversing then went forward, beeped his horn, then started going towards the Town Hall. Someone managed to open his door, then he slammed it shut and careered off. People were chasing him down the road, banging on his windows. ‌ "I just thought it was someone who'd gone the wrong way. Next minute, some guy came running back towards us, screaming. "I didn't correlate the two. It just turned into absolute chaos. There were fireworks still going off, so that just added to the sense of panic. People didn't know what was really going on, but you could hear the noise, the screams. It's just horrific." ‌ Peter Jones, 44, from the Isle of Man, recalled how he heard a "frantic beeping noise" before a car sped past him and his friends. He said: 'We heard a frantic beeping ahead and a car flew past me and my mate. People were chasing it and trying to stop him. A lot of people were injured.' Harry Rashid, 48, from the Midlands, described how selfless crowds began trying to smash the car windows to stop the driver. ‌ He said: 'The driver stalled for a few seconds, probably about ten. Then loads of people a bit further back started rushing at him trying to smash his windows. 'But then he put his foot down again and just ploughed through the rest of them. It was horrible. So many innocent people, fans just wanting to enjoy the parade, were hurt. ‌ 'I just wanted my kids to get off the road regardless because I couldn't trust whether there's a follow-up attack or something like that, because you're just exposed there on the pavement. 'It was all horrendous, so horrendous.' ‌ Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the "horrific incident" was not being treated as terrorism following the arrest of a 53-year-old man at the scene. The suspect is a white British man from the Liverpool area. "The car stopped at the scene and a 53-year-old white, British man from the Liverpool area was arrested. "We believe him to be the driver of the vehicle." Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the scenes appalling and hailed the bravery of rescuers. 'Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror,' Starmer said. 'The city has a long and proud history of coming together through difficult times. Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool.'

Former New Hampshire sheriff sentenced to prison on perjury charges, accused of taking county funds

DOVER, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire sheriff who resigned after he was accused of stealing $19,000 in county funds was sentenced Monday to 3 1/2 to seven years in prison on perjury charges. Prosecutors had asked for a seven-to-14-year sentence for Mark Brave. His lawyer, Leif Becker, had asked that the judge accept a proposed sentence of no prison time 'in mercy,' noting that Brave didn't have a prior criminal history and has accepted responsibility for his crimes. Brave, 39, was elected as Strafford County sheriff in 2020. At the time, he was both the youngest sheriff and the first Black man to serve as a sheriff in the state. He was arrested in 2023 and charged with eight felonies following an investigation into accusations that he misused county credit cards. Brave called the arrest a political attack, said he he did nothing wrong and would fight the charges. Brave was accused of using a county credit card to pay for travel to fictitious business meetings with romantic partners and then lying about it to a grand jury. He went on administrative leave and resigned that December, saying he felt it was in the best interest of the county. Brave pleaded guilty to four charges in February as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors: two counts of perjury, theft, and falsifying physical evidence. The agreement called for suspended sentences on the theft and physical evdience charges provided he met conditions such as paying back the county and not seek employment as a law enforcement officer in any jurisdiction. Brave said in court that he began making poor choices as his marriage was falling apart, The Boston Globe reported. 'I stand before you embarrassed and ashamed of my own conduct,' he said. Attorney General John Formella said Brave's sentence shows a 'clear and necessary principle' that no one is above the law. 'His repeated lies, misuse of taxpayer funds, and abuse of office were not just criminal — they were a profound betrayal of the public trust and the oath he took to serve with integrity,' Formella said in a statement.
