'We can't afford it' – Barcelona chief makes Manchester City January outlay reference ahead of summer transfer window
Barcelona sporting director Deco has compared his side's financial muscle with that of Manchester City following the latter's January dealings in the transfer market. Pep Guardiola reinforced his depleted, injury-ridded and out-of-form squad with the additions of forward Omar Marmoush, midfielder Nico Gonzalez, as well as defensive duo Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis. Marmoush, Gonzalez and Khusanov in particular have all gotten minutes under their belt and impressed in their opening month at the club, featuring in high-profile games against the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid. Manchester City made signings worth a club record £180 million in the January window – a much-needed investment in the transfer market given the significant drop-off in form and fitness across the first-team squad and their poor luck with injuries across the board. Pep Guardiola's former club Barcelona are themselves expected to enter the transfer market in the summer and reinvest in their squad after an impressive campaign domestically and in Europe under manager, Hansi Flick. However, Blaugrana sporting director Deco has sent a message of caution to the club's fanbase on the club's well-documented financial struggles, highlighting that Barcelona cannot afford an investment as notable as Manchester City made in January. 'Manchester City spent more than €200 million in January. We (Barcelona) can't afford it, today. But we don't need to bring three or four players either,' the Brazilian-Portuguese told TV3, as translated and relayed by Football Espana. 'They (Manchester City) need a renewal (of the squad). We've already done it. We signed three years ago – and the youngsters have established themselves.' Manchester City are currently in fourth place in the Premier League and are fighting for a place in next season's UEFA Champions League, with runaway leaders Liverpool expected to march to title glory in their first season under Arne Slot following Jurgen Klopp's exit. The FA Cup remains the only shot Manchester City have at domestic success this season and the Blues face Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle in a fifth round tie at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening – days after picking up a narrow win at Tottenham in the Premier League.

Barcelona Sporting Director Deco meets with agent of Barcelona defender
Barcelona have been on a run of contract renewals, locking in some of their most valuable assets for the coming years. Many of those deals were believed to be urgent, but now Sporting Director appears to be moving onto other options. The Blaugrana tied up new deals for Gerard Martin, Ronald Araujo, Pedri and Gavi, with the latest to come along being Pau Cubarsi. The Brazilian-Portuguese has not stopped there, and earlier this week also held informal talks with Frenkie de Jong's agent Ali Dursun, who is reportedly keen to stay at the club. Now Jijantes (via Sport) report that Deco has aslo met with the agent of French defender Jules Kounde to discuss a contract extension. It is a move that comes as something of a surprise, given Kounde is on their books until 2027, and it is noted that there is no hurry from either side to get a deal done as a result. They were opening discussions for a renewal though, for a player who has become key since signing, and a de facto choice at right-back over the last few years. The 26-year-old has jumped past the likes of Andreas Christensen, Inaki Pena, Ander Astralaga, Eric Garcia and Lamine Yamal in terms of discussing his future. The latter gave an interview this week, and did comment that his contract renewal would likely be done in the summer. Christensen and Garcia have been cited as potential sales in the summer, while Barcelona are reportedly negotiating with Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah to arrive on a free this summer. Manager Hansi Flick is reportedly keen for Barcelona to bring in more established competition for Kounde this summer, with youngster Hector Fort remaining relatively unused on the bench. His three starts this season have all come as a result of disciplinary measures for Kounde.

Five skiers killed in French Alps avalanches
Five skiers were killed in two separate avalanches in the French Alps on Wednesday, local officials have confirmed. One torrent of snow came in Val-Cenis, in the south-eastern Savoie region, killing four Norwegian skiers, while a Swiss skier died further north in the Haute-Savoie region, near Chamonix. Three of the Norwegians were killed instantly while a fourth, a woman, died in a nearby hospital after suffering severe hypothermia and a cardiorespiratory arrest. They were part of a larger group of seven skiers and the remaining three were unharmed. Jacques Arnoux, mayor of Val-Cenis, told AFP each member of the group had been carrying an avalanche beacon as they were off-piste skiing. Also known as backcountry skiing, it refers to any area not marked or maintained for use by skiers and is considerably more dangerous. "It was an avalanche of great size which was triggered outside the ski area," Mayor Arnoux added. A team of 10 mountain rescue specialists were despatched in the operation, a police source said. The Swiss victim, a 30-year-old woman, was skiing with her brother, who was taken to hospital for tests, and her father, who was unharmed. All three had anti-avalanche airbags and were skiing off-piste in the Mont Blanc massif mountain range. On Tuesday, a 55-year-old Brazilian-Portuguese skier was killed in a "very large" avalanche on an off-piste section Mont Blanc.

Massive avalanche kills skier in French Alps
A man died in a "very large" avalanche in the French Alps on Tuesday, local officials have confirmed. The body of the dual Brazilian-Portuguese national was found in the resort of Les Grands Montets at the foot of Mont Blanc, rescuers said. The avalanche, which occurred around 16:35 local time (15:35 GMT), was 1km (0.6 miles) in length and 400m wide. It was first reported that the victim was British, but the public prosecutor and the Chamonix High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) told the BBC on Wednesday that this had been incorrect. The avalanche fell in an off-piste part of Les Grands Montets where the 55-year old man had been skiing. It was spotted by a ski patrol on its way to close the area to the public, due to very poor conditions. Rescue teams attended the scene, where the skier was pronounced dead. PGHM told the BBC that the man's family had been informed. It added that it had not received reports of any further casualties.
