Gayle King Responds to 'Haters' Questioning Blue Origin Flight: 'I Wish People Would Do More Due Diligence'
Gayle King is happy to address the 'haters' voicing criticism over Blue Origin's all-female space flight. During a Tuesday interview with Extra, the CBS Morning co-anchor said it was 'good that we can really address' the controversy that has erupted after some questioned the usefulness of the expedition. More from The Hollywood Reporter Emily Ratajkowski Slams All-Female Blue Origin Space Flight: "Privilege Is Not an Accomplishment" Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King Blast Into Space and Back on Blue Origin Flight Hollywood and Silicon Valley Collide at Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, With Science Celebrated and Trump Slammed 'I was one of those people, before I went on this flight and became educated at space, [questioning,] 'Why are we spending so much money on space when there's so much to do here on Earth?'' King said. She added her perspective shifted when she learned more about 'what Blue Origin does,' which included finding 'a way to harness the waste here and figure out a way to put it in space to make planet Earth a better place.' 'So I wish people would do more due diligence,' King continued, before pushing back at the critics. 'And then my question is, 'Have y'all been to space?' Go to Blue Origin and see what they do and then come back and say, 'This is a terrible thing.'' On April 14, King, Katy Perry, Jeff Bezos' fiancée Lauren Sánchez, film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe and research scientist Amanda Nguyen headed into space for a 10-minute flight to notably become Blue Origin's first all-female transport. Once news of the venture was announced, Olivia Munn questioned the motive for the space flight and called it 'gluttonous,' and that started a wave of criticism about the journey. King acknowledged the financial concerns over the flight, admitting it was 'expensive,' but with further exposure 'if you get enough people who are interested, it doesn't have to be that expensive.' She also fired back at those calling their journey a 'ride' — a sentiment Munn used during her appearance on a Today With Jenna & Friends where she questioned the need for the expedition. 'I don't like that people are calling it 'a ride.' You never see a man, a male astronaut, who's going up in space and they said, 'Oh we took a ride,'' King added. 'I feel that's a little disrespectful to what the mission was and the work that Blue Origin does.' In fact, King said that the Blue Origin journey had already inspired 'young girls in particular,' while also allowing young boys to 'see what women and young girls can do.' Despite the backlash, the TV personality acknowledged the 'cranky Yankees' and 'haters' critiquing the mission, before adding: 'But I'm not going to let people steal my joy and steal the joy of what we did or what we accomplished that day — I'm just not going to let it in.' Emily Ratajkowski Slams All-Female Blue Origin Space Flight: 'Privilege Is Not an Accomplishment'
Emily Ratajkowski has joined the conversation surrounding Blue Origin's all-female space flight and feels it's 'not an accomplishment.' The model-actress took to her TikTok on Monday to share her thoughts, shortly after Katy Perry, Gayle King and Jeff Bezos' fiancée Lauren Sánchez were among six women who flew to the edge of space on the Amazon founder's Blue Origin spaceflight. More from The Hollywood Reporter Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King Blast Into Space and Back on Blue Origin Flight Hollywood and Silicon Valley Collide at Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, With Science Celebrated and Trump Slammed Why Hollywood Feuds Aren't What They Used to Be 'That space mission this morning, that's end-time shit. Like, this is beyond parody,' she began. 'Saying that you care about Mother Earth, and it's about Mother Earth, and going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that's single-handedly destroying the planet? Look at the state of the world, and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space, and for what? For what, what was the marketing there? And then to try to make it like … I'm disgusted. Literally, I'm disgusted.' Ratajkowski isn't the first to criticize the latest space expedition, as Olivia Munn questioned the purpose of the mission earlier this month. 'I know this is probably not the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now,' she said in part. 'What are you guys going to do up in space?' On Tuesday, the We Are Your Friends actress returned to TikTok to expand on her thoughts about the Blue Origin flight, which also carried film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe and research scientist Amanda Nguyen on its 11th manned mission. 'I think that this space mission is confusing to people because seeing women and people of color in spaces like science and politics that have not previously included them feels and looks like, really looks like — optically looks like — progress,' Ratajkowski said in her latest video. 'But the truth is, is that having a man who has gained his power and become a part of the one percent purely through exploitation and greed deciding to take his fiancée and a few other famous women to space for space tourism is not progress.' She continued, 'It just speaks to the fact that we are absolutely living in an oligarchy, where there is a very small group of people who are interested in going to space for the sake of getting a new lease on life while the rest of the population — most people on Planet Earth — are worried about paying rent, or, you know, having dinner for their kids.' Ratajkowski also echoed what she claimed another creator said, ''Privilege is not an accomplishment,'' adding, 'Exploitation is certainly not an accomplishment, and being able to take the privilege that you have gained from exploitation and greed of the planet, of resources, of human beings, and then doing something like going to space for 11 minutes, is certainly not an accomplishment.' 'That's why this all is giving Hunger Games, right?' she concluded. 'Because I think we're in a place in the world where we need to be able to discern what real progress looks like, and what happened yesterday was nothing like that.' Sánchez and King responded to backlash during a post-trip press conference on Monday, with the CBS Morning co-anchor saying, 'I feel anybody that's criticizing doesn't really understand what's happening here. We've all heard it. We were even all talking about that.' King also urged critics to do a 'deep dive' into what the flight represents for some people. 'I would love to have [critics] come to Blue Origin and see the thousands of employees that don't just work here, but they put their heart and soul into this vehicle,' Sánchez added. 'They love their work and they love the mission and it's a big deal for them.' Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King Blast Into Space and Back on Blue Origin Flight
Pop star Katy Perry, Jeff Bezos' fiancée Lauren Sánchez and CBS Morning co-anchor Gayle King had the right stuff Monday as they flew to the edge of space and back on a Blue Origin flight. Amazon founder Bezos' Blue Origin spaceflight carried six women on board, including film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe and research scientist Amanda Nguyen. The New Shepard rocket and capsule roared off the pad at 9:31 a.m local time from Blue Origin's launch site in Van Horn, Texas. More from The Hollywood Reporter Hollywood and Silicon Valley Collide at Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, With Science Celebrated and Trump Slammed Why Hollywood Feuds Aren't What They Used to Be Olivia Munn Questions Purpose of Blue Origin Space Flight With Katy Perry and Gayle King, Calls It "Gluttonous" The all-women crewed expedition took flight for around 10 minutes and reached above the Kármán line, at an altitude of 62 miles, at Mach 3, or three times the speed of sound. Back at the launch pad, Bezos and a host of celebrities, including an emotionally overcome Oprah Winfrey watching her best friend King soar into space, craned their heads to look at the spaceflight high above. Audio from inside the spacecraft captured the six women cheering and shouting as they soared above the Earth. 'Look at the moon!' one unidentified voice was heard to say. After the capsule and the rocket separated and the astronauts unbuckled to experience weightlessness in space for a couple minutes, the six women and their capsule returned to earth and landed under parachutes in the Texas desert at 9:42 am. 'Congratulations and welcome back to Earth,' the Blue Origin mission control told the crew. Once back and out of the capsule, both Perry and King kneeled to kiss the earth before reaching out to friends and family. Just before takeoff, Winfrey told interviewer Charissa Thompson as part the Blue Origin live stream how excited she was for King, who had overcome her fear of flying to soar into space. 'I think life is about continuing to grow into the best of yourself and the fullest expression of yourself, and I think that this is one of the most fullest expressions you can possibly have… I wish I had gone, you know. And I said, there's only one time that going up for the first time. You know, there will be other trips, but there's only one first time. So to be a pioneer, it's great,' Winfrey said. Once back on earth, King recounted the peace she felt in space, especially after conquering her fear of flight. 'I'm so proud of me right now. I just can't believe it,' she told Thompson during a post-flight interview. Kris Jenner also reacted after the flight and its successful landing. 'I don't think you think you would be that emotional, but it's, it's incredible. It takes your breath away. I feel like I have all this adrenaline, and I'm just standing here,' she told the Blue Origin livestream. Once back from the flight, pop star Perry said the experience of flying in space came only second to being a mother. 'I feel super-connected to love. So connected to love. I think this experience has shown me you never known how much love you have to give and how loved you are, until the day you launch,' she told the Blue Origin webcast. Perry added she will write a song to commemorate her spaceflight, and recalled in space singing 'It's a Wonderful World' rather than one of her own songs to her fellow lady astronauts. 'That is not about me. It's not about singing my songs. It's about a collective energy and a mirror. It's about us. It's about making space for future women and taking up space and belonging,' she said. The Blue Origin flight was the company's 11th human flight and 31st flight overall.
