Fifty-foot shrimp boat runs aground north of Flagler Beach drawing onlookers and questions
A 50-foot shrimp boat ran aground on Beverly Beach, just north of Flagler Beach, on Sunday, a jarring sight that attracted onlookers who were wondering how and why it happened.
The crew of the Miss Montie had already been removed from the approximately boat before it ran aground, said Coast Guard Marine Science Technician Brendan Blackwell, who went to the scene Sunday to check on the boat. He said he did not have details on why the crew was removed, but believed they were taken off the boat on Saturday.
The boat, which was out of Mayport according to the port name written on the stern, had a couple of hundred gallons of diesel onboard, he said.
"We are just making sure that everything looks like it's buttoned up, the vessel is still upright, it's not capsizing or anything. It's a steel hull, so it shouldn't fall apart overnight or anything crazy like that," Blackwell said.
He said the owner was making arrangements to have the boat removed from the beach.
The Flagler Beach Fire Department posted on Facebook that it was dispatched to the boat about 6:05 p.m. The boat was ashore in the area of 2480 N. Oceanshore Blvd. The Fire Department said the boat was searched. The scene was turned over to law enforcement.
People gathered on the beach on Sunday to see the boat and take photos, including selfies, as it shifted in the surf.
Jeff Olkowski drove up from Ormond Beach with his family to look at the boat.
Said Olkowski: "It is pretty wild to see it out on the beach. It's not something that you see every day."
