Brian Belichick reportedly leaving Mike Vrabel's Patriots coaching staff
Mike Vrabel joined the New England Patriots as head coach in a throwback to the Bill Belichick era. But his tenure won't involve Belichick's son, Brian Belichick. Brian Belichick is leaving the Patriots after five seasons as their safeties coach, according to ESPN. He'd been on staff since 2016 under his father in previous roles as a scouting and coaching assistant. Belichick remained on staff under the one-year tenure of Jerod Mayo after his father and the Patriots parted in 2024 following a 24-year run that featured six Super Bowl championships. It's not clear from the report what prompted the move or if Belichick already has another plan in motion. After a year away from coaching Bill Belichick is now the head coach at the University of North Carolina. Bill Belichick's other son Steve Belichick joined him on staff at North Carolina as defensive coordinator. Steve spent nine years on his father's staff with the Patriots and then a single season as the University of Washington's defensive coordinator before taking the same role at North Carolina. As of Tuesday afternoon, there were no reports connecting Brian Belichick to his father's staff at UNC. It's also not clear who will replace Brian Belichick in New England. The Patriots hired Vrabel to replace Mayo, who was fired after a single season on the job in place of Bill Belichick. Vrabel played eight seasons as a Patriots linebacker under Bill Belichick and was the head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2018-2023. Vrabel hired longtime Bill Belichick-collaborator Josh McDaniels as his offensive coordinator in one of his first moves as Patriots head coach.

January 28 - The New England Patriots are parting ways with safeties coach Brian Belichick, ESPN reported Tuesday. Belichick, the youngest son of six-time Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Belichick, has been with the team since 2016. He worked as a scouting assistant (2016), coaching assistant (2017-19) and safeties coach (2020-24). The Patriots hired head coach Mike Vrabel on Jan. 12. He replaced Jared Mayo, who was fired after posting a 4-13 record in 2024 in New England's first season without Bill Belichick since 1999. North Carolina hired Bill Belichick as head coach on Dec. 11. Another son, Steve, has joined him as the defensive coordinator for the Tar Heels.

Brian Belichick reportedly not returning to Patriots coaching staff
FOXBORO -- The last Belichick remaining in New England is reportedly leaving the Patriots coaching staff. Brian Belichick, who stayed on the Patriots staff last season even after his father was dismissed as head coach, will not be on Mike Vrabel's staff in 2025, according to ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss. The youngest son of Bill Belichick, Brian Belichick was New England's safeties coach for the last five seasons under his father and 2024 head coach Jerod Mayo. He initially joined the Patriots coaching staff in 2016 as a scouting assistant, and then served as a coaching assistant from 2017-2019. Belichick earned two Super Bowl rings during his time on the New England staff. While his older brother, Steve, chose to leave the Patriots after his father's departure following the 2023 season, Brian stayed on to remain on Mayo's staff. Steve left New England for the college ranks to become the defensive coordinator at Washington, but has since joined his dad on his staff at the University of North Carolina. Brian Belichick could now potentially join his father and brother on the Tar Heels staff in Chapel Hill. Mike Vrabel's Patriots coaching staff Brian Belichick is the latest member of Mayo's coaching staff to leave New England this offseason. Defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington and defensive coaches Dont'a Hightower and Drew Wilkins also left as new head coach Mike Vrabel built out his own staff for the Patriots. Vrabel has tabbed Terrell Williams to be his defensive coordinator with the Patriots, with Zak Kuhr, Clinton McMillan, Milton Patterson, and Kevin Richardson reportedly hired for unspecified roles. Richardson is the likeliest candidate to replace Belichick as the team's safeties coach at the moment, after he spent last season as an assistant defensive backs coach at Illinois. The only two coaches returning from New England's 2024 staff are special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer and special teams assistant Tom Quinn, who will hold those same roles for the Patriots under Vrabel.
