Where are Motherwell in manager hunt? And is Neilson a contender?
Michael Wimmer's final game as Motherwell manager was on Sunday, 18 May. He then headed home to Germany before surprisingly informing officials at the Scottish Premiership club a few days later that he wouldn't be returning after just a dozen matches in weeks have passed and we are now well into June. There is still no sign of an appointment and the players are due back from their holidays to start pre-season training on or around 18 June. So what is happening at the Fir Park club? What's the process & who is making decisions? A three-man sub-committee of Motherwell's executive board will draw up a shortlist, conduct interviews and make their managerial recommendation. That is much the same process that brought in Wimmer after Stuart Kettlewell's departure earlier in the main man at the helm, and the driving force behind the scenes at Fir Park, is chairman Kyrk Macmillan. The fashion businessman, whose father-in-law is on the board of Hertha Berlin, is originally from East Kilbride and has watched games at Fir Park with his own father and grandfather for the past 30 will be assisted in the hunt by chief executive Brian Caldwell and digital marketing chief executive Greg Anderson, who is also one of the key figures in the Well Society, the majority shareholding group who own the club. What are they looking for? The board sub-committee will follow the same procedure that led them to Wimmer, using data and metrics to judge how candidates align with the club's values, such as youth there is no reason for them not to do that. After all, Wimmer's shock exit was not down to results or were looking promising under the ex-Austria Vienna boss, who spent eight years working in Nurnberg's academy and three years working at Bundesliga level with Stuttgart, including an impressive interim spell in charge of the first the board land on a manager with a similar CV, they will be doing well. But they badly need some stability, given this is their fourth search for a manager in just three years. So who is in the running? Former Hearts and Dundee United manager Robbie Neilson's CV is among those to have dropped on Macmillan's last job was with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL, America's second tier, and it is understood a return to the Scottish game would be very much appeal following successful spells at Tynecastle and Tannadice. After guiding Hearts to third place in the top flight in 2015-16, Neilson moved to MK Dons before being appointed United manager. He guided them to promotion in the Covid-curtailed 2019-20 season, before leading Hearts to another top-flight promotion and third-placed Premiership finish in a second spell at Tynecastle. But there are a number of candidates who could stand out to the Fir Park club. Some are currently in employment and would potentially cost a compensation fee. Others, such as Neilson, are between clubs. Take Tony Docherty. Until very, very recently, he was the Dundee manager. After steering them to a top-six finish, he was sacked at the end of his second season after only securing their Premiership status on the final day of the side were very good going forward, but very porous defensively. Consistency was a problem, but their attacking flair, allied to Docherty's fine first season, may tempt Motherwell to consider familiar face is Scott Brown - but could Motherwell tempt the Ayr United boss into his first crack at the Premiership as a manager? Seen as upwardly mobile in coaching circles, Brown made his disappointment at failing to get Ayr promoted from the second tier clear. His experience as a player, added to his contacts, plus his coaching credentials with Fleetwood and in the Championship, might fit if Motherwell are looking for a young, Scottish what about Temur Ketsbaia? The Georgian impressed when interviewed after Kettlewell's departure but was ultimately passed over in favour of Wimmer. Most recently coach of the Cypriot national team, Ketsbaia also coached his own national side and has led both AEK Athens and Olympiacos. His wide experience of the European game and his contacts book would make him an attractive proposition, as would his knowledge of the British game, having played for Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Dundee. Have your say Motherwell fans, what do you think? Is the delay in naming a replacement for Wimmer a concern? And who would you like to see take charge?Let us know here

Motherwell pipped by Rangers to pitch of the season as Fir Park surface 'highly commended'
The Steelmen have been recognised in the inaugural Motherwell's Fir Park pitch has been recognised as one of the best in the country in the William Hill Premiership Pitch of the Season awards. The North Lanarkshire side installed a hybrid pitch in 2022 after significant investment and their efforts over the last few years have led to them being 'highly commended' by the SPFL in the awards' inaugural season. The home of Rangers, Ibrox Stadium, came out on top in the ratings, with Aberdeen's Pittodrie surface also high commended alongside the Steelmen. Motherwell chief executive, Brian Caldwell, said: 'This is recognition for all the hard work Alan [Carlin], Derek [Young] and their team put in, on a daily basis, to maintain the playing surface at Fir Park. 'It's great that they have been recognised for their exceptionally hard work. The pitch has been in magnificent condition for the entirety of the season, and that is a credit to their efforts and dedication. 'With the pitches now being monitored by the SPFL's pitch consultants, Propitch, this has raised the standards of all the grass pitches across the top-flight. There has been significant work and expenditure to achieve and maintain the high standards we have set for our playing surface. It's great news that this has been recognised.' Head Groundsman, Alan Carlin, added: 'I want to thank Derek Young, James Gray, Steven Drummond and all the staff who help us on matchdays for their continued hard work to maintain the playing surface at Fir Park and at the training facilities. 'They work around the clock, all year round, to ensure the players have a professional pitch to play football on at the weekend. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Brian Caldwell and the Executive Board for their continued support, which has allowed me to purchase the correct appliances. 'Although the season is drawing to a close, the work begins to ramp up for us during the off-season. This is the part many people don't see behind the scenes, and it shows the dedication the staff at the club have to producing a surface they can be proud of. "It's nice for everyone to receive this recognition, as it's thoroughly deserved.' A statement from the SPFL read: "Rangers, Aberdeen and Motherwell have all been recognised in the inaugural year of the SPFL's partnership with ProPitch. "In a bid to drive up standards of the natural and hybrid pitches in the William Hill Premiership, the league began working with the leading pitch consultancy firm at the start of the 2024/25 campaign. "Based on data from three pitch assessments over the course of the campaign, ProPitch awarded Rangers with the William Hill Premiership Pitch of the Season prize. Aberdeen and Motherwell received a highly commended award for their surfaces. "The SPFL's partnership with ProPitch has been extended and will also include William Hill Championship clubs in season 2025/26."

Lake Hodges tour guides say low water levels negatively impacting business
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Brian Caldwell has been leading photo tours on Lake Hodges for years, with many spectators drawn in by wildlife. 'Clarks and Western Grebes, which are iconic birds of Lake Hodges, so they have a very interesting and dynamic courtship routine a lot of people like to photograph,' said Brian Caldwell, Lake Hodges Photo Tours Company Owner. But after an inspection in 2022, the state mandated the water level be dropped, and Caldwell noticed a change in the wildlife population. 'The number of birds has dropped significantly. We've got probably 10 percent of the birds we had just three years ago,' Caldwell said. It is negatively impacting his business and causing profits to plummet. 'It's become more difficult because there's not as much activity,' Caldwell said. The City of San Diego released a statement, saying the following: The reduction in water level at Hodges Reservoir does not affect the majority of wildlife species present and around the reservoir. Two species that are sensitive to sudden fluctuations in water level are the western and Clark's grebes. The City of San Diego has been continuously monitoring grebes at Hodges Reservoir since 2019. Survey data indicates stable population numbers within the grebe colonies, and as recently as 2024, surveys showed successful nesting that resulted in juveniles. Grebes observed in Hodges Reservoir are not listed as threatened or endangered by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife or United States Fish and Wildlife Service and are not under threat of extinction. The number one priority of the City's Public Utilities Department is public safety. The City is maintaining the water level of Hodges Reservoir at a safe elevation in accordance with our state regulator, the Division of Safety of Dams. In the event of a failure of the dam due to an earthquake, the 280-foot restriction level provides the lowest possible risk to the community downstream. At the 280-foot elevation level, Hodges Reservoir is still fully available for use as a water source for fighting fires. Vegetation along the exposed shoreline and within the lakebed of the reservoir is a protected wetland under local, state and federal regulations. Caldwell says if the state mandated water level was about 10 feet higher it would create ideal nesting conditions, as it did last year when rain raised the water level. 'Unless the water comes up at least 10 feet I can't see us seeing any nesting this year,' Caldwell said. He wants the Department of Safety and Dams to reevaluate where the lake levels need to be. 'What the state has to do is understand that there's a far greater risk to all sorts of stuff with the water low than the water high,' Caldwell added. FOX 5/KUSI reached out to the California Department of Water Resources Division of Safety of Dams for an interview and are awaiting a response. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
