Jaguars trade back into Round 1 in mock draft, make 2 first round picks

The Jacksonville Jaguars traded back into the first round in a recent 2025 NFL mock draft. ESPN's Jordan Reid proposed the idea of the Jaguars moving up into the back end of the first round, giving them two first-round picks in 2025. Fellow ESPN analyst Ben Solak also wrote recently that he would like to see Jacksonville take a "big Day 2 swing" at the receiver position. "With 10 draft picks, Jacksonville can be aggressive in addressing holes on the roster," wrote Reid. "Finding a WR2 alongside Brian Thomas Jr. should be a priority. If Missouri's Luther Burden III or Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka are on the board at the end of the first round, then this is a move that's worth making." So, using Pro Football Focus' mock draft simulator, I attempted to have that scenario play out. After taking Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham at fifth overall, when the Washington Commanders were on the lock at pick No. 29, I decided to move up. Still on the board was Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka. Using Jimmy Johnson's trade value chart as my guide, the Jaguars moved up to pick 29 and sent to Washington picks 36 and 88. Given the number of selections the Jaguars entered the draft with, they still have a third-round pick to use and will have nine picks in total. Egbuka comes to the NFL as a very productive college pass catcher and quite polished as well, ready to make an immediate impact. The bulk of his playing time has come from the slot, but with this size and ball skills, he is someone who analysts believe can play on the boundary as well, which will be an important element in Liam Coen's offense. While the passing game is going to run through Brian Thomas Jr., Coen recently discussed the importance of being able to spread the ball around. Adding Egbuka to the mix boosts competition for playing time and targets, which in turn should elevate the play of the receiver room behind Thomas.

What grade did Jaguars' 2024 rookie class receive and how do they rank?
How did the Jacksonville Jaguars' 2024 draft class compare to the rest of the NFL? Gennaro Filice of recently handed out grades and ranked all 32 rookie classes based on their performances last season. The Jaguars' class would receive a solid B from Filice and ranked in the top half of the NFL at 13th overall. 'Amid a talented group of pass catchers offering varied skill sets, the Jaguars receiver (Brian Thomas Jr.) offers intoxicating traits and Pro Bowl production,' wrote Filice. 'Add in valuable first-year returns from nickelback Jarrian Jones and kicker Cam Little, and this rookie class is probably ranked too low.' Of course, leading the way for the Jaguars' rookie class was Brian Thomas Jr., who totaled the third-most regular season receiving yards in football with 1,282 at 14.7 yards per catch with 10 touchdowns. Perhaps more impressive than the raw numbers was that defenses knew Thomas was getting the ball with his 129 targets and they still couldn't stop him. As new offensive coordinator Grant Udinski mentioned recently, with Thomas' potential and growth, there is still a lot more out there for him. Also highlighting this class for the Jaguars was Jarrian Jones, who from the nickel, was one of PFF's highest-graded corners against the run in 2024. In coverage, he had six pass breakups and one interception. According to PFF's metrics, out of 42 eligible slot cornerbacks, Jones ranked 11th in passer rating, 13th in yards per snaps, and ninth in snaps per target. Kicker Cam Little was excellent in his first season. He made all 27 extra point attempts and was 27-for-29 on field goals, including a game-winner late against Indianapolis. On kicks from 40-49 yards, Little was 8-for-9 and from 50-plus he was 5-for-6. As the Jaguars look to improve their play from the defensive tackle position, a jump in Year 2 from former second-round pick Maason Smith will be an important factor in accomplishing that. The rest of the Jaguars' rookie class–Javon Foster, Jordan Jefferson, Deantre Prince, Keilan Robinson, and Myles Cole–all had relatively small offensive or defensive roles in 2024. At the top of Filice's list were the Commanders, Rams, and Chargers.
