Jenny Bae leads on LPGA for first time; Brianna Do's U.S. Women's Open quest stays alive The LPGA's inaugural Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba has gone to the weekend and there were just 24 golfers under par after two rounds. There's also a golfer who enjoyed her first-ever overnight lead tour. The 36-cut at El Camaleon Golf Course in Playa del Carmen came in at 5 over, as the field learned to navigate this course for the first time during hot and humid conditions. Big names to make the cut are Charley Hull, Carlota Ciganda, a previous winner of an LPGA event in Mexico, Linn Grant, as well as eight of the 16 rookies who are in the field this week. Some of the notable names to miss the cut were Yani Tseng, Sei Young Kim, Leona Maguire, Bronte Law, Gaby Lopez, Danielle Kang, In Gee Chun and Sophia Popov. Jenny Bae has 11 birdies through two rounds, the most of anyone in the field. On Friday, she hit nine of 14 fairways and 11 of 18 greens, which many players have noted are quite small targets. This 36-hole lead also marks Bae's first lead after any round in her LPGA career. "I feel like I handle it fairly well," Bae said Friday. "Definitely there is going to be some stress and pressure added to it, but I think as long as I keep my momentum and just try to stay positive on every shot and every hole I think I'll be okay." Brianna Do, the 18-hole leader, is a shot back at 5 under along with Miranda Wang. Playing her first event of 2025, Do has not made an LPGA cut in nearly two years. She's in the group of golfers in the field in Mexico not in the field for next week's U.S. Women's Open, so a win for Do would get her the 156th and last spot at Erin Hills. The tournament started with eight Mexicans, the most ever in an LPGA event. Maria Fassi, 3 over after two days, was the lone Mexican player to make the weekend. The LPGA is back in Mexico for the first in eight years.

The American's unflappable demeanor and sharp course management left her a stroke ahead of her compatriot Brianna Do and China's Miranda Wang, whose scintillating second-round 65 shook up the leaderboard at the $2.5 million LPGA event. The 23-year-old Bae, in her rookie season, leaned on a steely mindset to navigate the breezy, jungle-lined layout. "Today I had the same mindset as yesterday. Just keep calm and stay focused and try to stay in the present," she said. "It tells me I can still score despite what conditions I'm faced with. I feel pretty good heading into the weekend," she said after ending her round with a birdie on the 18th. The chasing pack includes China's Yan Jing, South Korea's Lee Jeong-eun, Jenny Shin, Choi Hye-jin, and Australia's Gabriela Ruffels, all at four-under (140). Mexico's Maria Fassi, at three-over (147), led the home contingent, cheered by a lively local crowd. Bae said she had been able to cope with the windy conditions that troubled some of her rivals. "I've gotten a good grasp of the wind. That's a really big advantage out here," she said. The stunning Riviera Maya backdrop also helped keep her spirit high. "I've never played on a golf course with such beautiful scenery. Even if I make a mistake, I look around and feel refreshed," she added. Wang was in sensational form delivering a bogey-free 7-under-par round of 65 but said it had been tough in the intense heat. "I was really drinking a lot of water, and my caddie did a good job just feeding me water all the time. I think that's the most important. "It's windy out there so there is some good breeze. Just enjoy the breeze and drink enough water," she said.

Today when I did well, I really took the chances,' Wang said. 'So I think for a player to have a good round here it's just like the short holes you have to get close and make birdies and the long hole, just make good swings and pars out there.'
