Electronic music hub to open near Pearl
Hey Hey Social is bringing a new tune to the Pearl area as Broadway News' newest tenant.
Why it matters: The new concept focuses on community, electronic music and providing a much-needed air-conditioned reprieve for customers of Broadway News' popular food and drink trucks, like Mira Matcha, Mila Coffee and Fratello's.
The big picture: Edgar Hernandez, a longtime DJ and co-owner of La Casa Frida, is spearheading the project. The goal is to create an indoor hub for the community that's already thriving at the food truck park, he tells Axios.
"The space is empty. Why not remodel it, open it up for the community . . . where they can sit inside and have AC," Hernandez says.
The mid-century space anchoring the property previously housed retail shops including Richter Goods and Chic'tique. Hernandez expects it to open by the end of the summer.
The vibe: By day, Hey Hey Social will feature soft beats for coworking and laid-back hangouts. At night, it will transform into a lounge-like social spot with plans to eventually serve beer and wine.
"The ultimate goal is to have a dedicated hub or venue for electronic music in all its forms," Hernandez says.
Hernandez says it was intentionally remodeled to preserve its 1960s charm.
What's next: Hernandez is planning weekend programming like "Breakfast and Beats" with Fratello's, plus open-deck nights to showcase aspiring DJs.
