STM upperclassmen showcase their business interviewing skills
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) — Upperclassmen from St. Thomas More High School went through mock interviews to prepare them for life after school. Last hope for keeping the Brockhouse animals in SF More than 75 students participated in mock interviews, with each one getting to identify three career fields they are interested in. 'We as a committee matched their choices with individuals in our community that are working in those fields. Most often the students have their first choice and they will be interviewing with volunteers in our community,' Committee Member Lynn Eckrich said. 25 community members from different fields volunteered their time to interview the students. 'In the 20 minutes, you have to start off and you walk in with a nice greeting, you want to be confident. Start off with a handshake, that's the most important part. First impressions can be made in 10 seconds and you really want to nail that first impression. And then after that, it's sitting down and staying confident,' STM senior Gabriel Reeve said. Students have been working on real-life skills to prepare for today. 'They've been working with our English teachers in class to put together a resume, they ask for letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent. And then we've worked with them in the classroom to help them go through a mock interview. Basically how to prepare for it, how to dress for it, the importance of making a good impression,' Eckrich said. 'Especially in our generation, a lot of people aren't that confident and aren't prepared when they come to certain things. So coming out of a good program and learning how to have formal etiquette, I think is really good for the first impression for interviewing and just for meeting people in general,' STM junior Amity Strand said. Many students say they enjoyed learning more about what could be their future careers. This program has been going on for more than 25 years and has helped some students get internships along the way. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 'It just kind of put it into perspective how hard they work and how often a lot of people go unrecognized,' Mayor's Youth Council Member Kinley Freese said. 'Throughout my time on the MYC, I've encountered an ample number of new and exciting opportunities for meeting with local and state officials and touring city department facilities as well as fostering relationships with other students in Sioux Falls who share similar passions to me,' Mayor's Youth Council Member Adeline Roths said. Mayor TenHaken started the Mayor's Youth Council in 2021. In addition to learning about local government and sharing input on community issues, the council also gives students a chance to give back. Washington teacher is SF Teacher of the Year
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Sioux Falls School District has a new teacher of the year. Monday night, Bruce Rekstad was named the winner of the 2025 Dr. John W. Harris Teacher of the Year Award. Rekstad got his start as a teacher on the Crow Creek Reservation. Last hope for keeping the Brockhouse animals in SF 'When I got the job at Crow Creek, fell in love with the Native people,' Rekstad said. While he's made other career moves along the way, today he's an Očéti Šakówiŋ Owáuŋspe teacher at Washington High School. The 74-year-old has been teaching Native American studies at the school for more than 20 years, something he's passionate about. 'We just had a poll with my students, and about 80 percent of our students, Native American population have never lived on a reservation. Some have never been to a reservation, but yet they're still Native American, so they know very little about their own culture, their own people,' Rekstad said. Washington senior Rosalia Szameit says Rekstad is like a grandpa to her. 'He's my favorite, and he's so wonderful. He's always the happy person around. No matter how bad someone's day is, he can always make them start laughing or smiling and it's just pretty amazing,' Szameit said. Rekstad says the students are what make the job so enjoyable. 'The energy that they bring forth…I am not a spring chicken and been at this for 33 years and wouldn't leave it for anything,' Rekstad said. Rekstad was one of five finalists for the award. He received a $4,000 check from Vern Eide. The Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation awarded the other four finalists $1,000 each. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Last hope for keeping the Brockhouse animals in SF
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A group has come forward in hopes of keeping the Brockhouse taxidermy collection once housed in the Delbridge Museum in Sioux Falls. Since the 1980s, the Delbridge Museum has helped families create memories. Puppies not abandoned outdoors, say Sioux Falls PD 'All my kids growing up, they love coming here. And the museum itself. You know, when I go through it, I remember seeing all the little kids and giggling and laughing and pointing that stuff,' Jason Haack said. But kids haven't been able to see the animals since 2023, when city leaders closed the museum, saying arsenic had been found in the mounts. The Sioux Falls City Council recently voted to gift the Brockhouse collection to three out-of-state nonprofits. But not everyone supports that decision. 'We're trying to get signatures to get this on the ballot for people, for people in Sioux Falls to vote on it. We feel that what the city fathers did is not right,' Glenn Charles Philips said. 'I've gone door to door getting signatures. And everybody is for keeping them in Sioux Falls. They can't understand what our city fathers were doing,' Philips said. While the city council received the Delbridge family's support in the decision to donate the mounts, those behind the petition drive still believe the collection should remain in Sioux Falls. 'There's not a mount like this throughout the whole United States. Nobody has a complete one like this. That's why I can't understand why the mayor and the city council wants to get rid of them,' Philips said. 'They're good for education. They're good for the kids. You're good for the future. And they don't understand how they can actually build something and actually make it a very lucrative endeavor,' Haack said. The group has until March 6 to collect 7,552 signatures.
