'Ransom Canyon' star James Brolin says son was basically raised as a 'cowhand'

James Brolin has been living the ranch life for years, joking that his son, Josh Brolin, was "basically raised as a cowhand." The "Ransom Canyon" actor told Fox News Digital that he wasn't raised on a farm, but growing up he was a huge fan of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, and as an adult he got his first horse. It was a former Palomino parade horse that he bought at auction for $235 "that was almost dead," but Brolin quickly realized he had nowhere to put the animal, so it had to sleep in his garage for the first night. "And it started slipping around," he said. "And so the next day I found a house to rent that had a corral and everything. And the next thing I knew, I bought a place with six acres and had six horses on it." By the second year of his 1967-1976 series "Marcus Welby, M.D.," Brolin said he moved to a 270-acre ranch in Central California, four hours north of where the show was shot at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. "I was a four-hour drive away from work," he said, "but I did it, and I loved that life. "And Josh was raised as a cowhand, really," he said of his 57-year-old actor-son. WATCH: James Brolin says living the ranch life prepared him for new role on Western 'Ransom Canyon' "I loved that life. And Josh was raised as a cowhand, really." Brolin said when Universal found out he had moved away from L.A., they gave him a little house to live in on the lot while he was on set. "They said we're gonna let you use this for now, but we're also putting your work into three days or four days a week, so you can be home," he explained, adding that to him, the ranch was "so perfect, I couldn't wait to get there." The 84-year-old is in familiar territory with his new Netflix show "Ransom Canyon," a Western that has been compared to "Yellowstone" about three Texas ranching dynasties. Brolin said he plays a drunk who spews "profanities" who is angry "at the world about losing a son and wife." The veteran actor said he's heard from people that they feel his character Cap Fuller's "pain, his crustiness." Brolin wanted to make the character "so real that people can't wait till the next scene he's in," he told Fox News Digital, adding, "and I think I kind of got there." The series was shot in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which he said is "not my wife's style, but man, I can live there." Brolin also praised his "No Country for Old Men" actor-son as the "most attentive father I've ever seen." Josh shares two children — Trevor, 36, and Eden, 31 — with his first wife, Alice Adair, and two children — Westlyn, 6, and Chapel, 4 — with his current wife, Kathryn Boyd. WATCH: James Brolin praises son Josh Brolin as 'most attentive father' he's ever seen Along with Josh and daughter Jess, 53, from his first marriage to late actress Jane Cameron Agee, Brolin also shares a daughter, Molly, 37, from his second marriage to former actress Jan Smithers. "In our business, you're not always there," Brolin admitted. "I'm amazed on how well [Josh is] there. And I envy him in a way that I wasn't more like that — kids are first, work is second. And he makes sure that his bosses know that before he takes the job." Brolin said he did his best to put his kids first as well when they were growing up, and during the three to four days a week at the ranch he "really attended with my kids and took them on camping trips and things like that." Brolin said he also adores his two youngest granddaughters. "It's a great time of life, and they may be a little spoiled, but man, what a family and what fun they have," he said. Brolin has been married to legendary singer and actress Barbra Streisand since 1998. "You practice on the first ones," Brolin laughed when asked about his long-lasting marriage to the "Funny Girl" star. "That's a joke, but maybe not." WATCH: James Brolin jokes 'you practice on the first ones' with successful marriage to Barbra Streisand "It's being able to know when to take a walk outside, you know, don't stay in the heat," he said of marriage. "Don't try and win the argument… The world is no one's fault. It's just the way it is. And sometimes if you just take a breather from each other, and I don't mean off the problem, I mean just going outside and walking around the pool, and loving nature and walking back in and making like, 'Oh, that was a weird little argument.'" He also suggested therapy for an "ongoing problem." "It's good to sit down and talk about it," said Brolin. "And it's actually good to sit down maybe with a pro who plays referee. And then you both end up in tears, and it just goes 'poof.' It's an amazing thing."

Marvel star Sebastian Stan was 'saved' by $65,000 'Hot Tub Time Machine' check

Sebastian Stan is everywhere these days. Fresh off of an Academy Award nomination for "The Apprentice" and a Golden Globe win for "A Different Man," the 42-year-old will soon star in the upcoming Marvel flick "Thunderbolts*." Stan has appeared in 11 films and and 5 TV series since 2020. But the actor hasn't always been in such high demand. Indeed, in a recent Vanity Fair profile Stan said that there was a point not too long ago when he was struggling financially. Stan explained that until he was cast as Bucky Barnes in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger," landing a gig was difficult. "I was actually struggling with work," he said. But financial salvation came from an unexpected place: a raunchy comedy he had starred in the year before. "I had just gotten off the phone with my business manager, who told me I was saved by $65,000 that came in residuals from 'Hot Tub Time Machine,'" he said. Since being cast as Bucky, Stan has gone on to reprise the role more than 10 times, becoming a household name in the process. Stan isn't the only Marvel star to struggle financially before his big break. Josh Brolin, who portrayed the villain Thanos, said last year that he struggled to work consistently for decades, adding that he was "always the one that was paid the least" on a movie set. In 2007, Brolin appeared in Ridley Scott's hit "American Gangster" and "No Country for Old Men," which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The two roles would turn his fortunes around, both in terms of landing steady acting work, as well as financially. But between shooting the films and their release, Brolin said he was "broke." Most of his money had gone to paying off debts he had accrued, and "whatever money I did make went back into family stuff." He had no jobs lined up and had taken home just $30,000 from his time on "No Country." "I was in a panic at that point," he said. But then he received a call from his lawyer. "She was like, 'Guess what, you got some backend [pay] from 'American Gangster.'" She sent him the number, which he read as $60,000. After taxes and fees, he would be taking home "maybe 25 grand," a number he called "amazing." "I called her and I was like 'I can't believe this. Sixty grand. That's amazing,'" he recalled. "And she said 'Look at it again.' And I had missed a zero. I started bawling. I started crying. It just made no sense to me. It was winning the lottery. I could never act again and live for the rest of my life off of $600,000. At that point in my life, I could make $600,000 last five lifetimes."

James Brolin says the 'best investment' he made in marriage to Barbra Streisand is his mattress

James Brolin says the secret to his nearly three-decade long marriage to wife Barbra Streisand is having a good time in the bedroom ... while sleeping. 'It's just great. The best investment we ever made is our mattress,' Brolin, 84, joked during an April 15 visit to "TODAY." 'Don't misunderstand me. We're both lazy. We love to sleep late. We (also) do a lot of our work — on the phone, on paper, reading — right next to each other.' Brolin, who swung by Studio 1A to talk about his new Netflix series 'Ransom Canyon,' said he wasn't exactly sure how many years ago he and Streisand walked down the aisle. 'It's 27 — I better know this. It's 27, 28?' he said. (It's 27 years.) But Brolin knew exactly how long he and Streisand have been an item. 'It will be 30 years on July 1,' said Brolin, adding, 'We met on July 1. We married on July 1 two years later.' As for how he and Streisand, 82, have learned to handle conflict together over the years? Brolin said it's simple. 'You learn to take a walk,' said the actor. 'Both of us. No, not just me. I think you've got to say, 'OK, take a deep breath. Take a walk.'' Brolin and Streisand were set up on a blind date in 1996 when each was in their 50s. The couple, who tied the knot in 1998, have inspired fans with their late-in-life love story. During a 2021 appearance on 'The Tonight Show,' Streisand recalled that first date with Brolin, which took place at a dinner party at her ex Jon Peters' house. 'We were set up as a blind date, and I was so shy that I came into the house and I went downstairs to be with the children and play with them until I had to sit down at the table,' said Streisand. 'I expected a guy with a brown beard and brown, wavy hair, like a mountain man,' she added. 'And I saw a guy that had all his hair cut off, no beard. And I walked by him. I put my hand through his hair and said, 'Who f----- up your hair?'' Apparently, Brolin was smitten from the start and told Streisand so. Streisand made up her mind about Brolin 'a few days' later, she said. In August 2021, Streisand told Variety what she believed was the 'secret' to a happy marriage. 'The secret is to listen carefully,' said the 'Prince of Tides' star. 'I think to be a good actor, you have to listen. To be a good person, you have to listen. To be a good marriage partner, you have to listen. Hear the other person. Agree to disagree.' The following year, Brolin shared his own tips for a happy marriage while speaking to People in September 2022. 'I think everybody needs to be a negotiator,' said the actor. 'Everybody needs to have patience and know when to take a walk.'
