I'm a national correspondent and often look at the country through the lens of sports. I write about serious subjects, so I like to find ways for my brain, and my heart, to take a break from the intensity. Here are some things I've recently enjoyed →
I write a lot about transgender Americans, and this documentary gave me some incredible insight. It's about the cross-country road trip Will Ferrell took with Harper Steele, a close friend who had recently transitioned, and features their conversations — some serious, some funny — about gender and acceptance.
As an animal lover, I can't help but check Instagram every morning for posts and stories from Niall Harbison, a former chef who has dedicated his life to sterilizing, feeding and saving street dogs in Thailand. His acts of kindness make me feel good about the world, and I've gotten to know dozens of adorable dogs by name.
Headed to report a story about a soccer team, I binge-watched much of this show on a long-haul flight and laughed so loudly that I startled the guy sitting in my row. The show hit home for me, a longtime sportswriter. With the announcement of a fourth season, I'm rewatching the episodes, loving the quirky characters, particularly the blunt and multifaceted Roy Kent.
I've loved Coldplay ever since seeing them in 2001 at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas. On their latest album, 'Moon Music,' a ballad called 'All My Love' is simple but moving, and the video for it is just as sweet. In it, the 99-year-old actor Dick Van Dyke dances barefoot and offers his takes on life and love.
The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's use of light in depicting everyday subjects — like a woman pouring milk — takes my breath away. The National Gallery of Art, not far from my home in Washington, usually has a handful of his works, which is special because only a few dozen of his paintings exist worldwide. I can stare at them for hours. What's in Our Queue? 'Will & Harper' and More
