Father burned in holiday boat explosion in Fort Lauderdale has died

A father of four who was burned in a boat explosion near Fort Lauderdale over Memorial Day weekend has died, according to a GoFundMe account set up to raise money for his burial and funeral. The fundraising page said the sudden passing of Joshua Fifi, a 29-year-old father, ' left his family, friends, and community in shock and grief.' Fifi's family hopes to raise $11,000 to cover Joshua's funeral and support his four children. 'Joshua was just beginning a new chapter in life. He was known for his sense of humor, his easygoing spirit, and the way he could make people laugh even on the hardest days. He was someone people could count on and now, we're coming together to support him one last time,' wrote fundraiser organizer Hannah Galindo On Memorial Day, 11 people, including two children, were injured after a 39-foot Sea Ray exploded in the Intracoastal Waterway about 5:45 p.m. near Ninth Street, where a sandbar draws boaters and beachgoers on holiday weekends. The boat was anchored at the time. Fifi had been in a medically induced coma at Jackson Memorial Hospital with third-degree burns covering 70% of his body. The GoFundMe account was originally set up for his recovery. The fireball, which quickly burned out on its own, was caused by fuel vapors igniting, according to Frank Guzman, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesperson. The injured boaters were taken from the scene to Broward Health Medical Center. Ten of the patients, including the two children, were later taken by ambulance to the Miami Burn Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Guzman said. A dog was also on board but was not injured. The children, boys ages 5 and 7, sustained extensive burns, Guzman said. Those who were injured had 'varying degrees of burn injuries and trauma.' South Florida has seen at least a half-dozen boat explosions over the last year, including two within days of each other in May. Safety experts recommend a number of measures such as smelling for continued gasoline fumes after fueling.

Man hospitalized after boat explosion in Fort Lauderdale; second boat explosion this week

A man was hospitalized after leaping from a boat that exploded into flames in Fort Lauderdale Wednesday morning, officials say, the second boat explosion in the city this week. Just before 9:30 a.m., Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue received multiple 911 calls about a boat explosion and fire just north of the Port Everglades cut on the south end of Fort Lauderdale beach, according to Frank Guzman, a spokesperson for the agency. There was one man on board the 30-foot boat, Guzman said. After the explosion, he jumped into the water and swam to shore with burn injuries. Paramedics took him to Broward Health Medical Center, where his condition is serious but not life-threatening. Fireboats from Fort Lauderdale and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue arrived to put out the boat fire, which took about 30 to 40 minutes to extinguish, Guzman said. The cause remains unknown. The fire investigator had just arrived on scene late Wednesday morning. Wednesday's explosion comes only two days after a boat explosion and fire on Memorial Day that severely injured 11 people. That explosion was caused by fuel vapors igniting, Guzman said, though officials still do not know what caused them to ignite. Flash fire on boat near Fort Lauderdale sandbar caused by fuel vapors igniting Fort Lauderdale has now had four boat explosions in about six months, Guzman said, which is above average for the timeframe; the city typically sees four to six boat explosions in a year. Two other boat explosions in December were also caused by fuel vapors igniting. On Dec. 23, one person was killed and six people were injured after an explosion at the Lauderdale Marina. 'This serves as an important reminder to all boaters to check their equipment,' Guzman said. This is a developing story, so check back for updates. Father, son arrested in Fort Lauderdale hit-and-run crash that killed bicyclist

A father and son from Plantation are facing charges in connection with a Fort Lauderdale hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist in December. Pedro David Vasallo, 64, and his son Pedro David Vasallo II, 24, were arrested by Fort Lauderdale Police on Tuesday on arrest warrants stemming from the Dec. 14 crash that killed 58-year-old Kenneth Solovay, said Det. Ali Adamson, a spokesperson for the police department. Vasallo II is facing one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving death; his father is facing one count of accessory after the fact, jail records show. Shortly after 6 a.m. Dec. 14, the bicyclist was struck by a silver 2019 Mercedes-Benz as he rode on Davie Boulevard near the intersection of the entrance ramp onto Interstate 95 northbound, according to an arrest warrant. The man's name is redacted in the arrest warrant but police previously publicly identified him as Solovay. He was pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center. Vasallo II was seen on surveillance cameras leaving his job at SWAY Nightclub early on the morning of Dec. 14 in a silver Mercedes-Benz, and the same car was recorded on surveillance cameras in the area of the crash just minutes before the bicyclist was struck, the warrant said. A silver-colored front bumper piece found at the scene and the surveillance cameras led detectives to identify the suspect's car, which was registered to two women who are relatives of Vasallo II, according to the arrest warrant. An officer went to the home address where the car was registered, looking for the silver Mercedes-Benz. A man who said he is the family attorney led the officer to the backyard of the home across the street, where other relatives of Vasallo II live, according to the warrant. The Mercedes-Benz parked in the backyard had damage on its front-right corner, hood and windshield, the warrant said, matching evidence found at the crash scene. A judge issued a search warrant for home surveillance cameras at both the address where Vasallo II lived and the relatives' home across the street, according to the warrant. A front-door camera showed Vasallo II arriving home shortly before 6:20 a.m. Dec. 14 while two relatives sat on the front porch at the other home. One of the relatives told the other 'that 'Gordy' hit someone on a bicycle,'' the warrant said. Gordy is Vasallo II's nickname. Vasallo II was also seen on surveillance camera driving the Mercedes-Benz into the backyard of his relatives' home just before 11 a.m., according to the warrant. 'The piece of bumper found at the scene was matched up to the vehicle with almost a perfect match,' the arrest warrant said. Court records detailing the elder Vasallo's alleged involvement were not available Thursday. The police department did not provide further information about the father's alleged involvement. Both men remained in the Broward Main Jail as of Thursday afternoon.

Man indicted in shooting that killed 3-year-old boy at Fort Lauderdale birthday party

A grand jury has indicted a Fort Lauderdale man on first-degree murder in the drive-by shooting death of 3-year-old Rylo Yancy last summer. Rylo was tragically gunned down while attending a Sesame Street-themed birthday party at Riverland Park & Pool on Sunday afternoon, July 21. Paramedics rushed the child to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died. READ MORE: 'He was too good for this world': Family mourns 3-year-old boy killed at a birthday party After the barrage of gunfire, two cars —a 2024 red Mercedes-Benz C300 and a 2017 black Mercedes-Benz C300 — sped away from the scene. Police found the vehicles days later, but the investigation into who pulled the triggers that day remained under investigation. On Monday, Fort Lauderdale police homicide detectives identified one of them as 20-year-old Tyler Hollins, who was already in Broward County jail on a December arrest on charges of possession of a firearm by a delinquent and unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon, according to Broward County court records. Details of what led detectives to link Hollins to Rylo's murder were not immediately available — nor was the grand jury report Fort Lauderdale police cautioned that, despite Hollins' arrest, more suspects have yet to be arrested. 'While this arrest marks significant progress in this murder investigation, there is still work to be done. Detectives have identified additional suspects involved in this shooting and are working to ensure those suspects are held accountable,' Detective Ali Adamson, a Fort Lauderdale police spokeswoman, said in a statement. 'Additionally, detectives continue to seek the public's assistance and urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the remaining suspects to come forward,' Adamson said. In his prior arrest, detectives with Broward Sheriff's Office's Burglary Apprehension Team were tailing a gray Mercedes C300 sedan Dec. 30 on Pines Boulevard. Detectives were waiting for the car to stop to arrest another man in the car, who had an outstanding warrant, according to a BSO arrest report. The car pulled into a parking lot, where Hollins got out of the Mercedes and into the backseat of a Kia, the report states, while two other men remained in the Mercedes. Florida Highway Patrol tried to get the driver of the Mercedes to pull over, but he sped off, with troopers ramming the car to get it to finally stop, the report states. The two men got into the Kia, the driver of which did pull over for police. Officers found Hollins packing a Glock 47 handgun loaded with 14 rounds, according to the report. The gun was reported stolen from a car in Boca Raton, the report states. Rylo was remembered by family members as an intelligent little boy who began talking when he was 9 months old. 'He brought peace and happiness to a household that was upside down,' his grandfather, Jerrold Pough, said days after the child's nulldeath. 'Even now, he's still bringing us together. God knew he was too good for this world.' Detectives ask that with information about the case contact the FLPD Homicide Tipline at 954-828-6677 or Detective Juan Rodriguez at 954-828-6673. Tips can also be provided anonymously by contacting Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS [8477]. A $10,000 reward continues to be offered for information leading to additional arrests This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
