Geneseo schools leader named Superintendent of Distinction

Dr. Adam Brumbaugh, superintendent of Geneseo CUSD #228, has been named the 2025Superintendent of Distinction by his colleagues in the Blackhawk Region of the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA). According to a news release, Brumbaugh was honored at an awards luncheon Thursday in Springfield. State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders was the featured speaker, where 21 IASA regional Superintendents of Distinction were recognized. 'I am humbled and honored to represent the Black Hawk Region, and I am grateful to work alongside so many talented superintendents,' said Brumbaugh, who has been an educator for 21 years and superintendent of Geneseo CUSD #228 for seven years. 'Such recognition is a credit to Geneseo and the committed families, staff, students and Board of Education I have the pleasure to work with.' Those nominating Brumbaugh noted a number of successes during his tenure including: Implemented instructional coaching cycles for every teacher. Led the implementation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Oversaw construction of a new $4.2 million Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center. Renewed a standards-based approach to teaching and learning. The Blackhawk Region includes school districts in Rock Island, Henry, and Mercer counties. Superintendents of Distinction were selected by peers in their region based on their commitment, dedication and leadership. 'Effective school leadership requires both vision and the ability to execute,' said IASA Executive Director Dr. Brent Clark. 'Dr. Brumbaugh has demonstrated both qualities consistently throughout his career in Geneseo. His focus on building community partnerships while enhancing educational opportunities has created lasting positive change for students.' The 11th annual luncheon was sponsored by Stifel, the country's leading underwriter of K-12 school bonds. 'The superintendents honored today exemplify the depth of leadership and personal commitment that exceptional superintendents bring to their districts to serve students and staff to be the best they can be,' said Anne Noble, managing director of Stifel. 'Stifel's longtime commitment to IASA culminates in honoring these amazing superintendents and thanking them for all they do for the students of Illinois.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Tulane, down two starters, takes on USC in Crown

The transfer portal is wide open, and Tulane has been viewing it from the wrong side. The Green Wave (19-14) have lost two starting players to the portal as they gear up to play Southern California (16-17) on Tuesday night in the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament in Las Vegas. Kaleb Banks, who was Tulane's second-leading scorer (14.7 points per game) and leading rebounder (6.7) entered the portal and hasn't yet chosen a new destination. Fifth-leading scorer Kam Williams (9.3) also put his name in and has committed to Kentucky. Leading scorer Rowan Brumbaugh is with the Green Wave in Las Vegas, but he declined to promise a return to the program. He's averaging 15.7 points and also leads the squad in assists (4.8) and steals (1.5). "I love it here and there's nothing more from a people or basketball school perspective that I'd want. It's more of a financial thing at the end of the day," Brumbaugh told reporters. "When you look back five years from now, do you regret not taking advantage of a big opportunity? I love it here and there's nothing more Tulane can do for me at the end of the day." Brumbaugh and Tulane have won eight of their past 12 games. The Green Wave reached the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament before losing to top-seeded Memphis 78-77. USC has dropped nine of its last 12 games, while struggling in its first season in the Big Ten. Trojans coach Eric Musselman is busy working the portal in hopes of adding talent to his squad. A frequent complainer about Big Ten travel, Musselman said his first season at USC has been full of lessons. "We learned a lot," Musselman said. "The first year on any job is to set a culture and a foundation. I think we did that." As of now, it appears USC's best two players are returning. Desmond Claude leads the Trojans with a 16.3 scoring average, while Wesley Yates III chips in 14.1 per outing. Reserves Kevin Patton Jr. (3.1 ppg) and Isaiah Elohim (2.1 ppg) are the only USC players to enter the portal up to this point. The winner faces either Colorado or Villanova on Thursday. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

PJ Haggerty finishes strong for No. 16 Memphis in 78-77 win over Tulane in AAC tourney semis

Associated Press FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — PJ Haggerty made eight free throws and forced a huge turnover in the final 40 seconds as 16th-ranked Memphis beat Tulane 78-77 on Saturday to advance to the American Athletic Conference Tournament championship game. Haggerty, the AAC player of the year, put the Tigers (28-5) ahead to stay with two free throws that made it 72-71 with 40 seconds left. He finished with 18 points, going 14 for 14 at the line and 2 of 13 from the field a day after his 42 points matched an AAC tourney record. Dain Dainja had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis, and Moussa Cisse had 10 points and 11 boards. Rowan Brumbaugh had 22 points for Tulane (19-14), which had five players score in double figures. After Haggerty's go-ahead free throws, Brumbaugh drove for a layup that was pinned against the backboard by Cisse. Referees initially ruled it was interference and counted the basket, but changed the call after a long review. Tulane kept possession with 26 seconds left, but Haggerty then poked the ball away from Brumbaugh, diving over him to grab the ball and call timeout. Haggerty made six free throws after that. Brumbaugh swished a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Kam Williams had 16 points for Tulane, and Asher Woods finished with 15. Up next Memphis plays North Texas or UAB on Sunday for the AAC tournament title in one of the last games before the release of the NCAA Tournament field. The Tigers will be in the 68-team field with or without the league's automatic bid. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 all season. Sign up here. AP college basketball: and recommended
