Man dies in industrial accident at EV battery plant being built near Savannah

A man died Tuesday morning at an electric vehicle battery plant under construction when a load fell off a forklift, the Bryan County Sheriff's Office reported. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The fatal accident happened at the HL-GA Battery Co. at the Bryan County MegaSite in Ellabell. Deputies responded to the site about 25 miles from downtown Savannah at around 11 a.m. TRENDING STORIES: 20 parks to close on Lake Lanier Georgia Tech student dies after being shot in the head at off-campus apartment Severe storms moving out of north Georgia As the truck was being unloaded, the load came loose from the forklift and fell, the sheriff's department said. Authorities said the man, a contractor at the plant site wasn't able unable to get out of the way of the load in time, and was struck and killed. Law enforcement officials haven't yet identified the victim, as of Tuesday, as authorities have to contact the man's family. Authorities said they are continuing to investigate the fatal accident. No foul play is suspected. The HL-GA Battery Co. is scheduled to start producing EV batteries for Hyundai, Kia and Genesis vehicles in early 2026. Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution have committed more than $4.3 billion to build the EV battery plant. Channel 2 Action News has reached out to HL-GA Battery Co., Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, LG Energy Solution and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for comment. A Georgia detention officer is off the job after she was accused of theft earlier this month. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] On May 8, the Bryan County Sheriff's Office launched an internal investigation following a property discrepancy reported by a former detainee. Officials said the detainee, who was arrested on May 4, reported a discrepancy in the amount of property returned to them upon release. The BSCO said after reviewing the jail camera video, they believed Ofc. Jalissa Washington, 27, may have been involved in the discrepancy. She was charged with theft by taking, a misdemeanor. Washington was booked into the Bryan County Jail. BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — The body of the missing I-95 construction worker was discovered on Thursday, the Bryan County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) confirmed. The office revealed on April 24 that at approximately 4:14 p.m., a homeowner called BCSO in regards to a strong odor that came from beneath a dock in the Ford Plantation community. Deputies, along with an investigator, responded to the call and soon found a boot under the dock. The Bryan County Fire Department, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Richmond Hill Police Department all joined the search and recovered the body of a deceased individual. The clothing on the body of said individual matched the description Jose Tilo Hernandez Garcia, who first went missing in the Ogeechee River on April 7. Bryan County Sheriff Mark Crowe held a press conference detailing the discovery. Hernandez Garcia's family has been notified. Watch the full press conference by clicking here. Bryan County Sheriff Johnny Christian has died; Governor, others offer condolences.

Bryan County Sheriff Johnny Christian has died at his home in Durant, and Gov. Kevin Stitt offered condolences and praised his service to law enforcement in a Facebook post Saturday afternoon. "He was a fantastic law & order sheriff who will be deeply missed by his community. Praying for his family and our friends in Bryan County," the governor posted about the sheriff's death, first reported by KXII-TV in Sherman, Texas. No cause of death has been released, but the Bryan County Sheriff's Office said it was unexpected. Christian was 58. Christian, a fourth-generation Bryan County resident, was serving his third term as sheriff. He was first elected in 2016 and reelected in 2020 and 2024, the sheriff's office said on Facebook. The post included his photo, the image of a badge bearing a "thin blue line" banner representing law and order, and the headline: "END OF WATCH: March 28, 2025." "Sheriff Christian became a legend in Oklahoma law enforcement and brought decades of experience and proven leadership to the Sheriff's Office," the agency said. "We are deeply saddened and shocked at the death of Sheriff Christian. "We are forever grateful for the work he tirelessly provided to keep the citizens of Bryan County safe and protected. He was a gentle giant who was a shining example to hundreds of officers across the state." The Durant Police Department posted on Facebook: "Sheriff, for so many years, you have been an inspiration, a partner, and a mentor to many of us. Thank you for your many years of service to our country, state, county, and city. Today, Earth lost a great man, but Heaven gained a superior protector. We all know you'll stand your post proudly at those pearly gates. Semper Fi Sheriff!" Christian was a decorated U.S. Marine and served as a paratrooper, field radio operator, and forward observer. Search warrant leads to arrest of 1 man for drug and firearm possession

BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – A multiple-unit operation has led to the arrest of one man in Bryan County. On February 11, 2025, The Effingham County Sheriff's Office Drug Suppression Unit and the Bryan County Sheriff's Office conducted a search warrant on a home in the 2500 block of Beulah Church Road in Pembroke around 10 p.m. During the warrant search, investigators found: 70 grams of Methamphetamine 25 grams of Fentanyl 3 grams of crack cocaine 1 gram of powder cocaine 8 firearms $2,000 in cash. Officers arrested Thomas Smith and charged him with: 3 counts of Possession of a Schedule II-Controlled Substance 2 counts of Trafficking in Illegal Drugs Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony Possession of a Firearm by a convicted felon Use of a Communication Device and Conspiracy to Violate Georgia's Controlled Substance Act.
