Along 4 The Hike: Tifft Nature Preserve

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — This week's hike is a 264-acre refuge dedicated to conservation and environmental education, right within the city limits. You're almost guaranteed to see deer on the trails. The site was once a landfill site, but the City of Buffalo bought the land in 1972 and sealed off the waste. In 1982, Tifft became part of the Buffalo Museum of Science, which runs it to this day. Out of this world: Buffalo Museum of Science celebrates Space Month

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Some might say that the Buffalo Museum of Science is out of this world and right now it is. April is Space Month, and the museum has a wide array of space activities to teach people all about our solar system. Space Month is part of the museums 12 months of science, a year-round effort to explore new topics with hands on learning. 'We want to encourage people to learn science and have fun doing it and through hands on activities and hands on experiences throughout the museum,' said Dr. Holly Schreiber, Buffalo Museum of Science director of science. 'People can learn that science is fun, its approachable. It's not some stuffy thing that you have to learn in a classroom.' If you're looking for something fun and educational to do during spring break there's an event for that, too. 'Spring into Space is April 14 through the 17. Activities are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and we'll have partner organizations joining us in the museum, running activities as well. We'll have stage shows and hands on demonstrations of a variety of kinds, great for all ages,' said Dr. Schreiber. Spring Into Space is geared towards K-12 students and includes programming that aligns with the month's space theme from astronomy to planets, but the museum isn't just for kids. 'Our events are geared towards all ages, and then we do have events that are geared towards adults themselves. Our Science After Hours Series, our next is April 25. You know, we know that some adult maybe wants to explore the museum in a more relaxed atmosphere and so we try to cater to that,' said Dr. Schreiber. The museum opens daily at 10 a.m. Next month's theme is Messy May – where getting messy is part of the science fun.
