Middle East-based engineer loses RM1.5m in online investment scheme, discovers scam only after failed withdrawal attempt
BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 7 — An engineer working in the Middle East lost over RM1.5 million to an online investment scam recently. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad sad the victim, 40, lodged a report with the Central Seberang Perai district police headquarters commercial crimes investigation division yesterday. 'In November last year the man got to know a woman through the phone and had a relationship before the woman invited him to join an investment scheme called GoldenCrimson that offered handsome returns. 'The man was interested to invest and was given a customer service number and a website link to register, and he invested RM90,510 and received returns of RM108,611,' he said in a statement tonight. The man grew confident in the scheme and made 103 transactions to 31 different accounts totalling RM1,532,563 from Dec 2 to March 8, and realised he was scammed when he failed to withdraw RM4,131,671 through the app but was asked instead to provide additional capital to be able to withdraw his profits. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

Underground blast near sewer startles Bukit Minyak residents, no injuries reported, says Penang Fire Dept
BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 7 — People in the Lengkok Perindustrian Bukit Minyak area were startled today by an underground explosion near a sewer line, which released smoke into the air. Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of Operations, John Sagun Francis, said an emergency call was received at 2.46 pm, and a team was immediately dispatched to the scene. 'Upon arrival, firefighters found that the explosion had occurred near a sewer line and detected a gas odour at the site. Witnesses also reported seeing smoke. Firefighters conducted a size-up and measured the surrounding air quality, including pH levels,' he said in a statement today. The operation was supported by the Hazardous Materials unit from the Sungai Bakap Fire and Rescue Station. Tests showed that the pH level of the liquid in the sewer was neutral. Further checks confirmed that the sewer line belongs to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), and the company has been notified to take further action. The operation concluded at 4.38 pm, and no injuries were reported. — Bernama

'The woman invited him to join an investment scheme called Golden Crimson that offered handsome returns. The man invested RM90,510 and received returns of RM108,611,' said Hamzah. The man grew confident in the scheme and made 103 transactions with 31 different accounts totalling more than RM1.5 million from December to March and realised he was scammed when he failed to withdraw his profits of RM4.1 million through the app but was asked instead to provide additional capital to be able to withdraw.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A surveyor was killed after reportedly falling from the eighth floor of a building – an estimated height of 27m – through an opening in a pressurisation shaft at a construction site in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, yesterday. Hairozie Asri, the Penang director of the occupational safety and health department, said the department received information about the fatal accident at 10.30am and immediately dispatched a team of investigation officers to the site. 'The victim, a 41-year-old local man working as a verticality surveyor with a subcontractor at the site, was confirmed dead after falling from the eighth floor through an opening in the pressurisation shaft. 'Preliminary investigations found that the opening was fenced off and covered only with plywood. It is believed that the measures provided insufficient protection for workers,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Hairozie said the department had issued three prohibition notices to the main contractor to halt all related works until safety measures have been fully complied with. He said the contractor had also been ordered to conduct an internal investigation to identify the cause of the incident, propose improvements, and present the findings to the department. Hairozie said the department would gather the relevant documents and record statements from all identified witnesses. 'A follow-up visit to the employer's premises will be made after corrective and preventive actions are taken. 'We will also pursue legal action under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Amendment) 2022 if any violations under the Act are found,' he said.

Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) director Hairozie Asri said the department received information about the fatal accident at 10.30 am, and a team of DOSH investigation officers was immediately dispatched to the site. 'The victim, a 41-year-old local man working as a verticality surveyor with a subcontractor at the site, was confirmed dead after falling from the eighth floor through an opening in the pressurisation shaft area. The incident occurred while he was carrying out surveying work at the building's lobby lift area. 'Preliminary investigations found that the opening was covered only with plywood and fenced off, but it is believed that the measures were insufficient to support weight or provide adequate protection to workers,' he said in a statement today. He said that following investigations on the day of the incident, DOSH issued three Prohibition Notices to the main contractor to halt related works until all safety measures are fully complied with. Hairozie added that the main contractor has also been instructed to conduct an internal investigation to identify the cause of the incident, propose improvements and present the findings to the state DOSH. DOSH will also gather relevant documents and record statements from all identified witnesses.
