ALEXANDRIA, Va. () — Several people are without a home after a fire tore through an Alexandria apartment Friday night. Alexandria Fire Department's Engine and Truck 208 arrived first at the scene, in the 5400 block of Sheffield Court, fire officials said. There, they found heavy flames coming from a top-floor apartment. Crews quickly began working to extinguish the blaze, which had spread to the attic. Due to the two-alarm fire, the Alexandria Police Department that Sanger Avenue between N Van Dorn and N Beauregard streets was temporarily closed. However, in a news release, the Red Cross said it is providing support for 25 residents from 10 apartments who were displaced by the fire. 'Trained Red Cross disaster response volunteers are supporting displaced residents with financial assistance, emotional and mental health support, help replacing medications, eyeglasses and other essential items lost in the fire and other recovery resources, according to need,' the Red Cross said, in the release. The relief agency added that five Red Cross disaster response team members were at the scene of the fire from around midnight until about 4:30 a.m., helping residents. ALEXANDRIA, Va. () — Runners in the streets means road closures for drivers and other people who will be making their way through Alexandria. The (APD) said it would begin closing roads at 2 a.m. on Sunday, April 27 for the . APD said city roads on the race route would be closed by 6 a.m. and would remain closed until the race is finished that day. The race, itself, begins at 7 a.m. APD expects it to last until around 11 a.m. Full reopening of the roads was expected by 12 p.m. The course begins at Market Square (301 King St.) and extends through Old Town down the George Washington Parkway. Police said additional roads surrounding City Hall and Market Square will be closed for race set-up.
