Trump's Interior budget would eliminate major programs

The Trump administration's fiscal 2026 Interior Department budget proposal made public late Friday would slash funding and staffing across a wide array of programs, many of them with proven political appeal across party lines. The budget proposal also calls for the elimination of major programs, including the Bureau of Land Management's onshore renewable energy program and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's offshore wind program. The U.S. Geological Survey's entire 'ecosystems' program budget likewise would drop from the fiscal 2025 level of about $293 million to zero in fiscal 2026. Advertisement In an accompanying budget summary, the USGS explains that the plan would eliminate the Ecosystems Mission Area, including grants to universities that duplicate other research programs or that support 'social agendas [such as] climate change research.'

Bureau of Land Management ousts official who reportedly resisted DOGE

Security officers escorted a top official at the Bureau of Land Management out of the agency's building on Tuesday, according to three people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly. The reason for the removal of Michael 'Mike' Nedd, a 30-year veteran of the bureau who serves as deputy director for administration and programs, was not immediately clear. But it comes after Politico reported that he had resisted a directive from an appointee of the U.S. DOGE Service, which stands for Department of Government Efficiency, though it is not a Cabinet-level agency.

The wildfire scorched more than a half square mile (1.4 square kilometers) of terrain at the site and surrounding conservation lands managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management.

BLM loses senior budget official

The Bureau of Land Management continues to undergo senior leadership changes. Barbara Eggers, BLM's assistant director for business management and administration who oversees development of the bureau's annual budget, among other things, is resigning as part of the deferred resignation proposal that was offered to staff last month, according to three people familiar with the situation who were granted anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. She plans to leave the bureau by the end of the month, the people said. Advertisement Eggers appears to be the first senior BLM official to have taken the deferred resignation offer as the bureau undergoes extensive changes to personnel, its top priorities and deployment of resources under President Donald Trump.
