Owner of Fort Worth's Fuego Burger assaulted in restaurant, family says
The owner of a Fort Worth burger restaurant is recovering after he was assaulted inside his business, according to a statement from his family. Carlos Rodriguez was attacked at the Fuego Burger restaurant, at 4400 Benbrook Highway in west Fort Worth, on May 13, according to a police report. Rodriguez will be away from the restaurant for two to three months until his doctors give him the all-clear to return to work, his family said in a statement shared on social media. Rodriguez' wife, Christie, and their son will keep the restaurant running in his absence, they said. 'While we may not be operating at our usual pace, please know every meal is still prepared with love and dedication,' the family's statement says. Nehemiah Green, 24, of DeSoto, has been arrested and faces a charge of assault causing bodily injury in the case, according to the police report. Fuego Burger was a finalist in a past Star-Telegram 'Burger Battle' contest for its signature sandwich, a green chile cheeseburger with crispy cheddar jack cheese. Fort Worth police did not immediately provide more details about the incident Wednesday afternoon.

Southside Slamwich is ready for round 2
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — If you're already missing the downtown Sioux Falls Burger Battle, there's another sandwich competition in the city during February. While Burger Battle gets all the glory in January, the Southside Slamwich is ready to dominate during February. It's the second year of the competition. Running on trails, tenacity and tradition 'We kind of thought about sandwiches because they're so versatile. You can do so many different things. And so we kind of launched it really quickly. We got together 12 restaurants last year and it was great success,' The Smoked Culture Co-owner, Jess Jones said. Those 12 restaurants turned into 15 this year. 'I think that's a doable way for people to kind of go out and try all of them,' Jones said. There will be sandwiches from restaurants between 41st Street and 85th Street, including 'Down with the Cheeze' from The Smoked Culture. 'What it is, is a pretzel bun, brisket, beer, cheese, some bourbon barbecue sauce, pickled onions, and then potato sticks for the crunch and kind of more salty flavor with a side of honey mustard,' The Smoked Culture Co-owner, Ryan Gaede said. Helping restaurants drum up some business during the slower months of the year. 'Everyone's sales were up in the month of February of last year, comparatively to the year prior to that. We are alone in our little restaurant, we have a very small kitchen. We sold over 1100 sandwiches last year in the month of February,' Gaede said. While the crew at The Smoked Culture helps put on the Southside Slamwich, they say it couldn't be done without all the restaurants bringing their unique creations to the table. 605 Rural Burger Battle gets underway in February
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — We've told you about the Burger Battle in downtown Sioux Falls that's about to wrap up this week. Throughout the month of February, there's another Burger Battle brewing, but this one is a little different, because it's outside the boundaries of Sioux Falls. The Safari Bar and Grill in Renner is one of six restaurants that will be competing in February's 605 Rural Burger Battle with the Rancher's Delight. SD tourism details 2024 numbers and latest projects 'Rancher's Delight came about, we had a little contest with our cooks and staff got to vote on which burger was the best to enter into the contest,' Safari Bar and Grill's Sandi Sorum said. They got the idea after watching how successful Sioux Falls' burger battles have gone over the years and wanted to give it a try. 'Just started reaching out to other bars and restaurants in our area and it developed from there,' Sorum said. Other businesses competing are The Baltic Corner with the Boss Burger, Norby's in Dell Rapids with its Jalapeno Popper Burger, Pinz in Dell Rapids with its Hot and Beefy Burger, and Prohibition Pub in Dells with the Hangover Burger. Another competing bar and restaurant is the Wooden Nickel in Crooks with its Bubba's Hot Mess. 'The owners of the bar have a son who's 11 years old and they call him Bubba, so that's why we came up with Bubba's Hot Mess,' Wooden Nickel's manager Lori Anfinson said. The bars and restaurants say the month of January business is kind of slow, so they thought holding a competition throughout the month of February would bring in more customers. 'We wanted something fun and exciting for the community; something family-friendly, so we thought that would be a good way to get people out and come and let our cooks showoff their culinary expertise,' Sorum said. You can vote for your favorite burger by using a QR code at each participating restaurant. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
