Teachers strike over 'unfair treatment' at school

Teachers at a school in Hull have walked out for a second day over the "unfair treatment" of staff, their union says. Some classes at St Andrew's CE VA Primary School, Grandale, Hull, were sent home due to strike action by National Education Union (NEU) members. Paula Burgin from the Hull branch of NEU said staff were striking over "inconsistent application of policies around pay, sickness absence and discipline that has led to unfair treatment of staff". A spokesperson from the school said the governing body was committed to work with the union to address the concerns that had been raised. Ms Burgin said the dispute formally began in March when staff put forward a list of complaints to school governors. She said policies being changed without consultation and parents complaints not being actioned were among a "plethora of issues" raised. Ms Burgin added that the resignations of two assistant head teachers in December had left "a bit of a vacuum at the top for leadership" which led to "disorganisation through the whole school". Head of religious education at the school Irene Treston-Waller said there were not enough staff to adequately supervise children during playtimes. Ms Treston-Waller, who has worked at the school for more than 12 years, said: "We are doing our best but we would really like additional support for those children who need it most. "Overall, we've got lots of issues that have been raised and I think they all need to be addressed... and in a timely fashion so that we can get on with our job which is not being in here it's being out their teaching our children." A spokesperson for the school said: "We will ensure that all parents are kept fully informed about whether there will be any further strike action, however we hope to be able to avoid this by having constructive dialogue with trade union representatives." The BBC put staff concerns to the school, but it did not address them directly. What's Trending Just four months after welcoming her first child, Skai Jackson has been granted a restraining order against her son's father following an alleged Mother's Day altercation. The former child star and Disney Channel alum, who starred in the series "Jessie" and "Bunk'd," filed the request against Deondre Burgin on May 19 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY on May 20. The granted order requires Burgin, 21, to stay at least 100 yards away from Jackson and their son, 3-month-old Kasai, as well as Jackson's home. The legal request comes after Burgin allegedly attacked Jackson on Mother's Day (May 11), per the actress's filing. Jackson, 23, claims Burgin slammed her head on the back seat window of her car and hit her in the face while she was holding their son. The altercation punctuates an alleged history of physical abuse dating back to April 2024. "I don't feel safe with my son being around him due to his violent history," Jackson said in the filing. USA TODAY has reached out to Jackson's representatives for comment. Jackson has also had her own brush with the law. In August 2024, the actress was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery following an altercation with her then-fiancé, who was not named, at Universal Studios Hollywood in California, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed to USA TODAY at the time. The actress was released a few hours after her arrest and was not charged by the LA County District Attorney's Office. In a September 2024 statement to People magazine, a representative for Jackson said she was "relieved" that an investigation showed the incident was "nothing more than a misunderstanding." Skai Jackson arrested on suspicion of domestic battery after altercation with fiancé Skai Jackson says baby's father tried to make her drink bleach while pregnant Jackson alleges Burgin subjected her to physical and verbal abuse on a weekly basis between April and October 2024, including a June 2024 altercation that reportedly transpired after a man texted Jackson. The actress, who was pregnant at the time, detailed the harrowing attack in her restraining order request. In a jealous rage, Burgin allegedly broke Jackson's phone, choked her against the kitchen countertop and demanded that she drink bleach to kill their unborn child. Afterward, Jackson says Burgin walked her to her car at knifepoint and attempted to force her to drive to the doctor's office and get an abortion. When Jackson began to comply with Burgin's request, the man reportedly halted his attack and asked her why she would want to "kill" their child. Skai Jackson is a mom! In July 2024, Jackson locked herself in her bathroom after Burgin allegedly chased her upstairs, after which the man punched and kicked through the door, per court documents. Burgin then reportedly slammed the actress against the bathroom wall, spit in her face and choked her until she "could not breathe." Jackson also says Burgin threatened her with a handgun during the alleged altercation, which she purports to have video evidence of. The judge in Jackson's case has ordered Burgin to relinquish any firearms in his possession, including firearm parts and ammunition, within 24 hours of receiving the restraining order. Skai Jackson says her mother filed a restraining order against child's father Jackson isn't the only one who's taken legal action against Burgin amid his alleged abuse. The actress claims in her restraining order request that her mother, Kiya Cole, previously filed a similar order for Burgin, which reportedly led to an argument between Jackson and Burgin in September 2024. Jackson says Burgin, who was allegedly upset by Cole's filing, tried to hit her and also threatened that his cousin, Mark Burgin, would kill Cole in retaliation. Representatives for Cole were not available for comment at the time of publication. In addition to the restraining order, Jackson has been granted sole legal and physical custody of son Kasai, which also prevents Burgin from visiting the child. A hearing in Jackson's case is scheduled for June 9. Skai Jackson gets a restraining order against father of her baby, alleging physical abuse

Skai Jackson says Deondre Burgin, the father of her 3-month-old son, has been abusing her since last spring, including suggesting that she drink bleach while she was expecting in order to terminate her pregnancy. Most of them are from 2024, but the inciting event behind the filing appears to have been an alleged attack on Mother's Day of this year. Jackson said in her filing that Burgin attacked her on May 11 while she was carrying son Kasai. "He grabbed me by the hair, slammed my head on the back seat window of my car and hit me in the face while holding my son," the "Jessie" and "Bunk'd" actor wrote in her filing. "Deondre caused me to have a bloody nose. I don't feel safe with my son being around him due to his violent history. He also said 'F' my child." Last June, Burgin took Jackson's phone so he could check her messages because a man had texted her, the filing says. Jackson said he then broke her iPhone and choked her against a kitchen counter. "He demanded that I drink bleach to kill our unborn child," Jackson wrote about the June incident. "He then walked me to the car with a knife in his hand telling me to get in the driver seat and if I called out for help he would stab me in the stomach. He then called his friend ... telling him he was about to kill me. He then told me to drive to the doctor to get an abortion. When I tried to he asked me was I crazy and why would I want to kill our child." Jackson said Burgin threatened her with a handgun and also has a rifle and a switchblade, the filing says. The "Dragons: Rescue Riders" voice actor said he threatened in September 2024 to have a member of his family come kill her and her mother. In October, Burgin allegedly threatened to kill her after she asked him to go to therapy, the documents said. He stands 6-foot-4 to Jackson's reported 5-foot-2, according to her application. She asked the court to stop him and his family from posting anything about her on social media, saying that he had threatened to post revenge porn.
