OTTAWA, ON, May 31, 2025 /CNW/ - New Brunswick's Dr. Margot Burnell is now the president of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), following an installation ceremony at its annual general meeting today. An oncologist for more than three decades at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Dr. Burnell has seen the impact of a health system under pressure. During her address to physician-colleagues, Dr. Burnell emphasized her commitment to improve access to care as a core issue of her year-long mandate. She is also eager to advance Indigenous reconciliation in health care, strengthen Canada's health workforce, reduce physicians' paperwork and improve physician well-being. "Canadians deserve a health system that is there for them when they need it," she says. "I strongly believe that ideas and lived experience from patients, physicians and others at the front lines are critical to building a future for health care that Canadians can take pride in." The president of the CMA is elected by members from a different province or territory every year and speaks on behalf of Canada's physicians to policy-makers, partners, media and Canadians. With the start of Dr. Burnell's presidency, Dr. Joss Reimer of Winnipeg becomes the CMA's past president. Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi named CMA president-elect Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi became president-elect at today's AGM. Dr. Ogunyemi practises medical dermatology in St. John's, NL, and has maintained a visiting specialist clinic in Labrador City since 2018. In addition to numerous leadership roles at Memorial University of Newfoundland's Faculty of Medicine, including the inaugural Assistant Dean of Social Accountability (2020–23), he has served on the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association Board of Directors. Multiple suspects arrested in Rankin County stabbing incident

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Rankin County deputies said multiple suspects were arrested in connection to a stabbing. The incident occurred just before 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, April 17 at a home on Jacks Place just off of Old Fannin Road near Flowood. Mississippi man killed in multi-boat crash during Major League Fishing tournament in Alabama Investigator Tyler Burnell, with the Rankin County Sheriff's Office, said the stabbing victim was hospitalized. He said when deputies arrived at the scene, they encountered a second victim at the home and detained multiple suspects. After the scene was secured, the second victim was treated by medical staff and also transported to a local hospital. Burnell said the suspects have yet to be identified due to the fact that all parties involved are non-English speaking. This is an active scene and ongoing investigation. Close Thanks for signing up! RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Rankin County deputies said a man was arrested after drugs were discovered at the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport. Investigator Tyler Burnell, with the Rankin County Sheriff's Office, said narcotics investigators and officers from the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority (JMAA) received information on April 15 regarding a passenger on an inbound flight. Man sentenced for shooting Lyft driver in Jackson After the flight landed around noon, federal and local law enforcement officers conducted a K-9 sweep of packages being offloaded from the aircraft. Burnell said a K-9 alerted to two bags belonging to the passenger that had been reported to authorities. The passenger was identified as Monroe Milton III, 38, of Jackson. According to Burnell, Milton admitted that there was one pound of mushrooms in his luggage, and he was detained. During a search of the bags, investigators said they found drug paraphernalia, multiple jars of hemp/marijuana products totaling to 68 grams and a clear zip-tied bag containing 493 grams of Psilocybin mushrooms. Milton was charged with trafficking a controlled substance and transported to the Rankin County Detention Center. His bond was set at $100,000. Close Thanks for signing up! RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Rankin County deputies announced a man, who was in a stolen vehicle, was arrested after a multi-county chase. Investigator Tyler Burnell, with the Rankin County Sheriff's Office, said a deputy attempted to stop a maroon Toyota around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 3. The vehicle had been reported as stolen out of Oklahoma. Man flees Rankin County traffic stop, tosses drugs, nearly hits deputy Burnell said the vehicle led deputies on a chase on I-20 eastbound, crossing through Scott and Newton counties. As the vehicle approached the City of Newton, the suspect, 37-year-old Joshua Eric Jade Keen, exited the interstate. Burnell said Keen rammed a deputy's vehicle, which caused his own vehicle to become disabled. Keen was arrested. Investigators said he has multiple out of state felony warrants and a lengthy criminal history consisting of assault, fraud, theft and drug possession. Keen was charged with felony receiving stolen property, felony fleeing and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He is being held in the Rankin County Detention Center without bond. RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Three suspects were arrested in Rankin County after shots were fired at the direction of multiple people, investigators said. Deputies responded to the area of Cedar Brook Drive near Pearl for a disturbance just before 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Two men arrested for mass shooting in downtown Jackson Investigator Tyler Burnell, with the Rankin County Sheriff's Office, said deputies discovered that no one had been injured. While conducting interviews, investigators learned that two parties had been in an argument, which escalated to a fight. As one party was leaving the area in a white Jeep Cherokee, Burnell said the back seat passenger, who was identified as Lamarquis Trevail Green, leaned out of the back window and fired multiple shots at people. The vehicle was later located off of Greenwood Avenue in Jackson. Burnell said the firearm used in the shooting was recovered. After the suspects were arrested, it was discovered that Green has a prior felony conviction in Mississippi. Green has been charged with drive-by shooting and possession of firearm by convicted felon. Raekya Fashay Mitchell was charged with accessory after the fact to drive-by shooting. An unidentified juvenile was also charged. Green is being without bond at the Rankin County Detention. Both Green and Mitchell will have their initial appearances in Rankin County Court next week.
