Eric Church Reflects on Being Dragged Into Taylor Swift's ‘Shake It Off' Lawsuit: ‘How Did This Even Happen?'
Eric Church looked back on his unexpected involvement in the lawsuit over Taylor Swift's hit single 'Shake It Off' in a new interview. Back in 2017, the superstar got hit with allegations of copyright infringement by Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, the songwriters behind 3LW's 2001 single 'Playas Gon' Play.' More from Billboard Taylor Swift's Five-Year Legal Battle Over 'Shake It Off,' Explained Olivia Rodrigo Brings Out David Byrne for Scorching 'Burning Down the House' (And Does Some of His Dance Moves) at Gov Ball Mariah the Scientist's Governors Ball Set Canceled Last Minute 'Due to Unforeseen Circumstances' 'In her deposition, when [talking about the line] 'players gonna play, haters gonna hate,' she says, 'The first time I heard that phrase was in Eric Church's song 'The Outsiders,'' the country singer explained in a sit-down with Rolling Stone published Friday (June 6). 'She was saying she never heard it on [the 3LW song], which is what they were suing her for. And two weeks later, I got served by the people that were suing her!' According to Church, getting slapped with his own legal papers prompted him to reach out to Swift via text. 'I was like, 'Hey, thanks. Next time, let's just skip that part?'' he said. 'And she sent me a text: 'I'm sorry. It's the truth, though. That's when I heard that phrase.'' 'It's since been settled,' Church added of his own involvement. However, the 'Hands of Time' singer concluded in the interview that the whole experience still had him wondering, ''How did this even happen?'' Since an agreement to drop the 'Shake It Off' lawsuit was reached between Swift, Hall and Butler in late 2022, Church has released his eighth studio album, 2025's Evangeline vs. the Machine, which he'll be promoting this fall with his upcoming Free the Machine Tour. More recently, Church also collaborated with Morgan Wallen on I'm the Problem album cut 'Number 3 and Number 7,' and in the same Rolling Stone interview, defended Bruce Springsteen after the namesake of his hit 2011 single 'Springsteen' criticized President Trump and his administration during a concert. Olivia Rodrigo Rocks Governors Ball With Surprise David Byrne Duet
Last Updated: Olivia Rodrigo surprised the crowd at the Governors Ball near the end of her performance by introducing David Byrne. Olivia Rodrigo showed her love for music from the '90s in a special way at the Governors Ball in New York. She invited David Byrne, the well-known singer from Talking Heads, to join her on stage for a special set. Together, they performed the band's hit song from 1983, Burning Down the House, for which Olivia wore a red outfit and David matched her with a red jumpsuit over a white T-shirt. They danced to the song's signature moves while singing and running around the stage. The performance happened after the festival was delayed because of bad weather, but the energy on stage made the wait worth it. According to People, Olivia surprised the crowd near the end of her performance by introducing a special guest. She told the audience how happy and proud she was to share the stage with music legend David. After their energetic performance together, Olivia ended the show with her hit song, Deja Vu. But the concert wasn't over yet, she came back on stage and performed fan favourites like Brutal, Good 4 You, All American Bh and Get Him Back. Olivia Rodrigo isn't the only young artist to perform the 1983 hit track in recent years. Hayley Williams and her band Paramore also recorded their version of the song. Their cover was part of a special album called Everyone's Getting Involved, which is a tribute to the music of David's band. The album was released last year and features many popular artists, including Miley Cyrus and Lorde. After the Governors Ball, Olivia is now getting ready to perform for her fans at the BST Hyde Park concert in London on June 27. Just two days later, on June 29, the singer will perform at the famous Glastonbury Festival. She will be one of the main headliners at the event, where she'll be sharing the spotlight with other major artists like Neil Young and The 1975. To celebrate 50 years since their first-ever show at New York's legendary CBGB venue, Talking Heads released a fresh music video for their classic track Psycho Killer. The video features actress Saoirse Ronan, who brought a new twist to the song. First Published:

Tyler, The Creator Ignites Opening Day of 2025 Governors Ball: 7 Best Moments
After a sweltering first day at the 2025 Governors Ball on Friday (June 6), Tyler, The Creator made sure to remind everyone multiple times throughout his explosive closing set just how hot it really was. With sweat pouring down his face, he paused his music a few times just to comment on how he was 'hotter than a b—h,' and how he knew there were hundreds of 'moist' orifices out in the crowd. More from Billboard Olivia Rodrigo Brings Out David Byrne for Scorching 'Burning Down the House' (And Does Some of His Dance Moves) at Gov Ball Governors Ball 2025 Delays Headliners, Cancels Early Sets Due to Weather on Day 2 Chris Brown Earns 21 New RIAA Certifications - Including 8x Platinum for These Two Hits Tyler was right, and I hadn't realized until those moments of reflection just how disgusting I actually was from an eventful first day at Gov Ball. JPEGMAFIA motivated dozens of dirty and bruised teenagers to mosh the afternoon away while performing a capella renditions of Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe.' There was a trip down memory lane hosted by T-Pain, who has been on an absolute tear of nostalgic shows as part of his Back to Wiscansin Tour. Somewhere in the distance Benson Boone was doing a flip, was blowing out speakers, and Tyla was enthralling supporters in her steamy 'popiano' sound. But we had all gathered there to see Tyler, The Creator bring his Chromakopia album to life, and when he finally stepped out in his green suit, the crowd could hardly contain themselves. While Tyler acknowledged the heat, his mid-tour exhaustion, and the fact he had only a little over an hour, he made sure to run through hits both new and old. As he did his best to satiate his moist and sweaty fans who had braved the elements to witness him live. Here are the best moments from Tyler's memorable Gov Ball set. Coming out the gates with the first three songs of Chromakopia, Tyler opened with an explosive performance of 'St. Chroma,' 'Rah Tah Tah' and 'Noid,' letting each track flow into the next as he rapped each bar with lyrical precision. The crowd was energized and fired up, and unsurprisingly rapped along to every syllable from Tyler's new album. Whenever Tyler has performed 'Sticky,' it's always been such a moment — and this time was no different. The crowd went bananas (quite literally, one kid was crowd surfing in a banana costume), screaming out GloRilla and Sexyy Red's verses as the bass rattled everyones ear drums. While IGOR's 'Earfquake' satisfied everyone there, it was 'New Magic Wand' that truly sent a shockwave through the crowd. The energy was magnetic as Tyler tore through the 2019 single. Tyler, The Creator barely did any leg work during his run through of 'Like Him,' as his fans carried the song from start to finish. As Tyler pirouetted his way across his signature Chromakopia shipping container, the fans cried out the song in what was a surprisingly moving moment of solace. 'Can you rap my sister's verse, New York?' Tyler called out as a video Doechii appeared on the screen behind him. As fans ripped through her 'Balloon' bars, Doechii's ravenous energy was felt all through the crowd. The Swamp Princess' magnetic energy was indescribable as it shot through the crowd, reminding me and everyone else that 'Balloon' is a sleeper hit. While he only indulged for a few bars, Tyler's 'Yonkers' still goes hard when it's played outside. The 13-year-old song shook the festival, as fans raged and rapped along to the Goblin classic. Tyler, the Creator's Flower Boy made only a few appearances during the set, but 'See You Again' was the perfect closer to a great night. The fans swooned as Ty did his thing, showcasing the timeless nature of that song. It was a great closer, and one that people were chattering about on their way out of the grounds. Mariah the Scientist's Governors Ball Set Canceled Last Minute ‘Due to Unforeseen Circumstances'
Mariah the Scientist is not taking the stage at Governors Ball 2025 today (Saturday, June 7), even though her name had remained on the day's reworked schedule after the New York City festival experienced a four-and-a-half hour delay in opening. Billboard learned of the cancellation on the ground at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. No announcement was heard at the event, and the change of plans came with no explanation. The social media message simply stated, 'Due to unforeseen circumstances, Mariah the Scientist will no longer be able to perform.' The 'Burning Blue' singer-songwriter — whose breakthrough hit is her first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100, where the single currently sits at No. 35 — later acknowledged the cancellation on her Instagram account, writing, 'So upset I'm not getting to perform at Gov Ball today. I'm so sorry to everybody who showed up through the traffic and rain. I apologize.' She later added a photo showing a rainy view through a window with the caption 'I really wanted to perform.' Billboard has reached out to representatives for both Mariah and Governors Ball for further comment. The three-day outdoor festival, which launched Friday, opened doors hours later than expected on day two due to forecasts of rain and thunder in the area. While those in line on Saturday were originally meant to be let in at 12 p.m., doors were delayed until 4:30 p.m. With the weather delay, early sets by Lexa Gates, Yaya Bey, The Backfires and others were removed completely from Saturday's schedule, while several later performances were pushed back an hour or more. Olivia Rodrigo's headlining set on the main stage was moved to 9:25 p.m.; Feid and Wave to Earth, both set to close other stages, had their set times shifted to 8:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Hozier, Mt. Joy, Clairo, Raye, Royel Otis, The Japanese House and more are on the bill for Governors Ball 2025's third day on Sunday (June 8).
