Saka to feature in much-changed England team against Senegal

BURTON UPON TRENT, England : Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka will feature in a much-changed England team for the friendly against Senegal on Tuesday, manager Thomas Tuchel said. England laboured to a lacklustre 1-0 win over Andorra in World Cup qualifying on Saturday. "After the last (Premier League) game of the season I had a little strain," Saka told reporters on Monday. "Fair play to England, they managed me well. The manager left me out (on Saturday) and said I will play tomorrow. "I love coming to England camps and playing for England. It has been a bit of frustrating year with injuries but I am here now and looking forward to tomorrow." Tuchel was very critical of his team's "lack of urgency" after the win over Andorra which put them in command of Group K. "I protect my players, I said no names of players, it is not an individual matter," Tuchel said at the team's training base at St. George's Park. "But as a team we did not reach our standards. I felt we didn't play seriously enough in what we needed to do in a World Cup qualifier. "Why should we sugar coat it? You have been in the stadium, why should I tell you that we had a good game? No harm done. We can handle criticism." England should face a tougher test against Senegal. The African side, who lost 3-0 to England at the 2022 World Cup in the only previous match between the teams, are unbeaten in their last 23 matches across all competitions. England have won all three games under Tuchel and their last six matches in all competitions, keeping a clean sheet in each of the last five. Saka sidestepped a question about how Tuchel's managerial style compares to his predecessor Gareth Southgate. "I don't really like to compare, if I'm honest," Saka said. "Since I have come into the camp (Tuchel) has been quite demanding, quite intense on the pitch and off the pitch he's been more relaxed. "He's a nice guy, he let us enjoy ourselves and created a nice environment for all the players to enjoy." The team spent Sunday evening watching Portugal beat Spain in the Nations League final. "It was high level in the final. High-quality football," Tuchel said. "That's the benchmark, we will try to hunt that, to reach that and I'm convinced we have everything it takes to match that when we play these teams."

Forward James named in England squad for European Championship

BURTON UPON TRENT, England : England named Lauren James in their squad on Thursday for this year's Women's European Championship despite the Chelsea striker being sidelined with a hamstring injury for over two months. James, who has seven goals in 27 appearances for England, had been in a race against time to recover before the team kick off the defence of their title versus France on July 5. Sarina Wiegman's squad suffered a blow on Wednesday when defender Millie Bright withdrew from consideration for the tournament, saying she was not physically and mentally at her best. Bright's withdrawal comes after goalkeeper Mary Earps and midfielder Fran Kirby announced their international retirement. Earps appeared to have lost her starting spot to Hampton and Kirby was told she would not be in the squad for the finals in Switzerland. Goalkeepers: Hannah Hampton, Khiara Keating, Anna Moorhouse

The Rotherham club aiming to 'make football fun again'

A former lawyer determined to "make football fun again" has launched a community club aimed at players who find formal leagues too competitive or Evans originally opened the All About Football club in Burton Upon Trent in 2022, after he felt "too old and unfit" to join a local moved to South Yorkshire, he has teamed up with Rotherham United Community Trust to set up another group at Parkgate Astroturf, where everyone is welcome regardless of their fan Joe said: "When you're a kid football is fun then you join a team, you get coached, you get shouted at and it becomes a chore." The 37-year-old said the inspiration for starting the project came when he moved to Staffordshire three years ago."I was determined to find somewhere to play," he said."But everywhere I looked, the options seemed impossible."I either had to know loads of people to form a team or be good enough to join an existing one."I didn't tick either box, so once again I found myself on the sidelines."Honestly, it felt pretty rubbish and over time it really affected my physical and mental health."Over the years, I tried joining teams but I wasn't fit enough or good enough to keep up, and eventually, I stopped trying."After taking matters into his own hands and initially organising his own causal kick-about in 2022, All About Football has grown considerably over the last three years with more than 200 members signed up to sessions in Burton, Derby and said he was "always determined" to start sessions in his home town. The new 4G facilities for the Rotherham sessions are managed by the Rotherham United Community manager Johnny Allen said getting involved was a "no brainer"."We want everyone in Rotherham to be healthy and successful and unite the community," he said."I think you get to a certain age and have other priorities."You don't want time off work when someone's put a horrible two-footed tackle on you on a Monday night." More than 20 players signed up for the first hour-long session in said they had felt "uncomfortable" in other competitive Meakin admitted he had not stepped onto any sort of football pitch for 10 years."I did training as a kid and I loved it, but my head and feet had two different ideas," he said."I was never good enough to get into a team so there didn't seem many options but this is perfect for me." Dan Fox has a young son who plays football, but thought his "playing days were over"."It was a really good atmosphere, none of us had played together before so to have 20 lads with a range of abilities playing together was fantastic," Dan now has ambitious plans to expand the network into other areas of North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, before setting his sights on Maltby and Chesterfield. Major charity shop chain launches £1 closing down sale ahead of shutting popular branch in HOURS

A MAJOR charity shop chain has launched a major £1 closing-down sale as it gears up to close its doors for the final time. Scope, which runs shops across England and Wales, is shuttering its location in Burton upon Trent later today. 1 "Last chance to grab a bargain before we close on Friday," the retailer wrote on Facebook. "Thank you for all your support and custom." This is the full list of stores which have closed and are set to shutter in the coming days: Blyth - May 10 Hove, George Street - May 17 Erdington - May 24 West Hampstead, London - May 24 Exmouth - May 31 Bury - May 31 The six closures come after Scope shut 22 branches in March and April following a consultation process earlier this year. This is on top of six sites which shut due to their leases ending. The four stores that closed in April as part of the consultation period were in Newport, Southampton, Atherstone and Welling. Meanwhile, these are the 18 stores that closed in March as part of the consultation: Amersham Barking Bangor Birkenhead Bishop Auckland Castleford Devizes Dewsbury Eastbourne Haywards Heath Lewisham New Milton Orpington Parkstone Scunthorpe Shirley (Southampton) Skipton Workington Scope said a further 35 branches will shut, on top of the May closures, bringing the total number of closures to 70. It has also confirmed that another five shops are set to be shut later this year, with a possible further two as well. Bringing the total number of closures to 77. The locations of these stores or their closure dates are yet to be revealed. Debbie Boylen, head of retail at Scope, said: "We know our teams put in their very best efforts, but our shops are collectively now losing money when taking account of all of their costs. "A number make strong profits but there are loss making shops too. 'We never take the decision to close our stores lightly." Scope first launched the consultation to close dozens of its stores in January due to declining footfall and spiralling costs. Chief executive Mark Hodgkinson said the charity 's retail arm had made a 'real contribution to raising vital income', but that external factors had 'made trading harder'. He added: "This situation isn't confined to Scope. All retailers have been hit with a greater shift to online shopping. Despite its challenges at high street branches, Scope's online sales have boomed in recent years. It saw online sales increase by 75% in 2023/24, up £1.2million on the year before. RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April. A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024. Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."
