Hometown Heroes Banner program prepares to honor veterans in Hollidaysburg

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Borough of Hollidaysburg is still accepting applications for this year's Hometown Heroes Banner Program. The program honors veterans and active members of the military with banners that include their picture, name, and branch of the military. The deadline to submit an application is March 3, a month earlier than it was in 2024 when the deadline was in April. The banners will be on display from Memorial Day until Veterans Day. The program started in 2019, with only 26 banners on display. It has fluctuated since then, but last year there were almost 100 applications. This Weekend: Stuckey Mitsubishi to partner with YMCA for 'Pack the Bus' event 'Pretty much everybody knows someone who's in the service or is someone who's in the service,' Melanie Ramsey, Community Relations & Events Director for Hollidaysburg Borough said. The 2025 title sponsor is the Hollidaysburg American Legion Fort Fetter Post 516. Joseph Dodson is the President of the Board of Directors for the American Legion Post 516 and the Mayor of Hollidaysburg. 'As a veteran, in my family, I've had a cousin and two uncles who gave the supreme sacrifice; gave up their lives for our country to keep us safe. So I'm a big supporter of the veterans and this program. And I think when you drive through any town that has these heroes pictures, people that gave up their time and talents and went out and served, they need to be honored,' Dodson said. Applications should include a $10 donation towards the program to help defray costs. If you cannot afford the donation, the borough will try to help you offset the costs. To apply for the Hollidaysburg Hometown Heroes program, you can pick up a paper application at the Municipal Building during office hours, Copy Rite on Allegheny St, or access it from the Borough's Town Crier. Completed applications can be returned to the Borough of Hollidaysburg. If you have any questions, contact Melanie Ramsey at (814)-696-0544. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
