Your D.C. Weekend: Awesome Con, Petalpalooza, and serious dog fun
A festival highlighting all things "geek culture" is taking place this weekend in D.C. Why it matters: Awesome Con is an annual celebration bringing together over 60,000 fans of manga, anime, cosplay, fantasy and sci-fi culture across three days of events. State of play: The event will run April 4-6 downtown at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. (And, yes, you definitely should come reppin' your finest costume or cosplay). Here are some events to flag, D.C. dorks: ⭐ Did we mention celebs will be there? Orlando Bloom and Liv Tyler will be on site Saturday and Sunday for a "Lord of the Rings" event, plus you can swing by a " Goonies" reunion Saturday or meet the cast of the " Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" on Sunday. Plus: Check out panels featuring cast members from shows like the manga series " Hunter x Hunter" (Friday) and the animated cartoon " Blue's Clues" (Saturday). 🧛 Don your Spock duds and sign up for the cosplay competition on Saturday — or, if you're not feeling competitive, there's a just-for-fun cosplay runway show Friday. ‼️ Plus: Across the weekend, there will be educational programming about how science actually impacts sci-fi, a celebration of all things LGBTQ+ in geek culture, and a series of events just for kids. More weekend events to check out: 🎶 Celebrate the power of poetry and hip-hop at this year's Words, Beats & Life Festival, kicking off Thursday and running through Sunday at venues across D.C. Highlights include a Friday dance party at Wild Days Rooftop and poetry performances at the Kennedy Center (tonight) and Busboys and Poets (Saturday). (Prices vary) 🔍 Embrace the past at the D.C. History Conference, running Thursday to Sunday at the D.C. History Center and the MLK, Jr. Library. Mark your calendar for events like a talk on D.C.'s rock scene, a Shaw walking tour and a look at the history of roller skating in the District. Man sentenced to 7 years in prison for robbery at Busboys and Poets in DC
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A Maryland man was sentenced last week for a February 2022 robbery at Busboys and Poets in D.C., according to the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia (USADC). According to the USADC, Isaiah Chase, 27, of Silver Spring, Md., was sentenced by the U.S. District Court to seven years in federal prison with five years of supervised probation upon release for the gunpoint robbery. 2 arrested in Maryland after burglary at gun store in Fairfax County, police say The USADC says Chase pled guilty in August 2024 to brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. Court documents state Chase was one of the conspirators who planned to rob the Busboys and Poets in the 400 block of K Street NW. with the help of an employee on Feb. 6, 2022. According to court documents, the employee told Chase to arrive at the bookstore around 9:30 p.m. and to enter when a specific person could be seen at the front of the business. Getting ready to bloom: Cherry blossoms reach stage 5 of 6 Court documents continue by stating Chase and two other people entered the store when employees were cleaning for the night, wearing dark clothes and masks. The three robbers pointed guns at the employees and demanded money; however, they were only able to take the keys to the business before driving away, according to the USADC. Chase was arrested on Nov. 4, 2022, in his Silver Springs apartment, and officers searched his home. At the home, the USADC said officers seized: A loaded Glock 27 .40 caliber handgun with a magazine and 24 rounds of ammunition A loaded .556 caliber automatic machine gun with a magazine containing 49 rounds of ammunition A loaded .556 caliber AM-15 rifle with a magazine containing 25 rounds of ammunition A .40 caliber magazine containing nine rounds of ammunition Two bags of marijuana intended for distribution.
